Scanners get a bad rap
I don't understand all the talk I hear fairly frequently about scanners "abusing the system." There seems to be a certain subset of forum users who for whatever reason hate the idea of people being able to scan attacks for their ally mates. In my opinion scanners serve a useful function in the game, and help strengthen the ties inside allies. The player who choose to play the scan planet account takes a major hit in terms of his chances at doing well, and with all of the specialization on amps, looses out on other resources. At some level scanners are the least selfish players in the game as they are sacrificing their planet for the greater good. Yeah I know some of you are going to say they give alliances an unfair advantage, and put new players at a major disadvantage not having access to scanners, but just because they help one group more then another group doesn't make them a bad idea.
Specialization of different members of an ally to work for a greater good is something allies have always done, and should continue to be encouraged. That's why there are four races, and ships from different classes that target the same class, all of these things allow for specialization. All specialization inherently has a negative tradeoff therefor balancing things out. So those that want to restrict jpg scans to launched fleets to limit "scanner abuse" are really suggesting to take away a specialization that imho does far more good for the game then harm. Enough said.

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
Main problem people have is that its the main big alliancess who have the advantage of jgp and the smaller alliances dont or the solo ppl.
Its one of them "We are bigger so get more things than you hahaha"
Yes I agree that there is nothing better than having a scanner but it does seem unfair to the non mainstream part of the game.
If you havent got it you will complain.
If you have got it you wont.

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
I wonder if I could get away with running a public Scanner service. Where anyone can come to me if I'm online and request a scan. I wouldn't use admin tools to get the resources, I'd play the planet as if it was normal.
Even if the community wouldn't trust an admin in such a role, I'm sure someone who is really really kind out there could run one of these planets.
Either way, I agree with you that scanning planets are part of the game and in my humble opinion (Which I admit is more often than not perhaps wrong) are excellent as part of it!

You ( or anyone else doing it ) would be overworked though, and it couldnt be automated through a bot , since those are against the rules
Its a nice idea/gesture but ultimately unfeasable due to either the potential workload involved, or rules getting in the way

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
Scanners are probably the most respected in alliances imo.
But on another note; the is no 'I' in team. And PA is a team game now, just like a football team has its scouts alliances have their scanners.
Just like Armies have their Big Gunners, alliances have anti BS/CR specialists and anit Fi/Co Specialists.
Being able to set yourself a role definately adds to the fun of the game, of course you won't get into the T10 planets or anything like that, but you don't always have to be a scanner. Next round you could Covert Op. Something I would like to have a dabble with next round.
I can't believe anyone could ever moan about scanners.
Though, it is annoying when one is not online when you need one. [=

I pondered this a while back. I decided that I couldn't take the amount of people that would try to suck my cock. Having to launch fleets etc to JGP would be a hassle too, but I think there are scripts running around to fix that*.
* Further proof that it should be automated ingame anyway.

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
it's still used by everyone then which makes it pointless... and people would indeed be overworked...
besides that i don't think scanners have that much of respect tbh:/ personally i like having them alot... but i have 10 times more respect for GOOD bc's then semi active scanners

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
I think scanners got the respect of their alliance mates etc. But scanning = being slave since you don't get anything in return: no score, no points , nothing. And a good scanner = an active player. Hard to find someone who is active, pays his account and scans all the day for 'nothing'...
But without scanners alliances are dead. Perhaps i'll be back to the roots next round: scan only and 0 ships and prolly top10 worst planet

Re: Scanners get a bad rap
you need at least 1 ship to be a scanner
an idea mentioned *somewhere* was the MoW being able to take requests in galaxy to do scans - they pay the resources, and the MoW scans.
Also, I'm still majorly in favour of splitting the tech tree to allow people to research the "less" important things like scans and covert ops along side "more" important things like ships - this would definately give the newer players the advantage of having scans at similar times to alliances (though obviously not so many amps)
