Why do faggots have an accent?

This is something that has always confused me, a lot of them clearly have some kind of way of speaking that makes them distinctively "gay". I can't quite put my finger on it, but im sure that all of you will have noticed it too.

anyway, the question i ask about this is... why on EARTH does that happen? No other sexual group has a specific accent, why are you lot so special?

If its about how the PARTICULAR voice evolved, i dont know. But the reason why it "continues" is because people mimic who theyre with, to feel more comfortable.

Whenever these sorts of threads pop up i always find it amusing to see who tries to offer a reasonable answer (eg, Deffeh, T&F) , and who goes for the moderately homophobic attempts at humour (eg, JJ, Kura), and those who answer what they suppose to be a balanced answer but end up being just as bad as this latter category on account of the way the view homosexuals as possibly some kind of cave-dwelling entity which operates on entirely different principles to the rest of humanity (eg, Arke and to some extent Radical Ed)

Do you really think that my use of the word "faggots" was meant to be derogatory? Or is it the question itself that you find offensive. On the first point you know as well as I do that im not a homophobic person, i think in fact, that pretty much everyone who frequents this board (well, any of the regulars) is fairly enlightened with regards to this stuff, it's not a term I would use in official circles.

On the second point, i really AM curious, i can think of a few theories myself, but i wanted to hear what others thought.

You really need to stop taking everything so personally, the amount of times people call me a "druggy" when it's only even loosely true (not to mention the fact that I would much rather be gay than addicted to drugs, well, sort of, its a weird dilemma) and i don't flinch is enormous.

No offence is meant when people like me say these type of things, and yet you seem to take it as so. I never mean to offend you, i very rarely mean to offend anyone, but it is most definitely your problem and not mine if you do get offended. Everyone here gets shit for something or other, and only very rarely is it sincere. Personally, i think you need to realise that these things are meant in jest rather than malice and just get on with it. You don't have some special position here that gives you the right to get offended when others wouldn't, and I'm not certain you realise this.

Having said all this, I do like you Steven, you seem like a decent guy, and you are funny and clever. But that is true for at least 80% of the regulars here. You are special, but so is everyone else and this is how it works.

I do kind of half expect you to say "silly child" or some other offhand patronising comment. I wouldn't be surprised if you did, but i would be slightly dissapointed. In most cases, people speak vaguely similar to their parents. Where they don't they probably talk similarly to how most of the people they spend time with (e.g. their peers - like kids who adopt the dominant accent of their class). Neither of these cases would seem to apply to "gays" (however you're defining that) though.

Then again...I'm not sure if Henry really meant that anyway. When someone says something like this, there are obviously a number of ways to take it. You could assume he was being evil, spiteful and bigotted, and get very angry about the whole thing, or you could try and read it in a semi-sympathetic manner and get at what he was talking about. As Henry is generally a friendly easy-going chap I don't see what getting all hysterical achieves - aside from making yourself look rather silly.

Now on the subject at hand, obviously gays "do not all sound the same" or anything like that, but it's possible to imagine some sort of similar "vocal trait" could exist exclusive to homosexual men. Or at least, that's how I assumed he meant it. His opening post is (by his own confession) vague - he can't put his finger on it as he says.

But anyway, I can't really agree with him since "non-camp" gay men don't share any unique vocal traits that I've ever observed. But as I said in one of my earlier posts, I took it that he might have been talking exclusively about "camp" men (which isn't really the same thing as homosexuality one way or the other).

Homosexuals, or the general perception by society is that they are all camp. Obviously this is false. Not all gay are camp and not all camp people are gay. It's just that when someone fits a certain stereotype we are more likely to remember. It's because you expect it that it seems that most do it when in reality it's nowhere near all.

You might know a number of homosexuals who don't speak in the way that you describe, you just don't know they are gay.

This is entirely too painful to observe. No rational argument can be made for being able to judge someone's sexuality accurately by their manner of speech. Is there a bi-sexual accent as well? Can we infallably recognize the heterosexual by their accents? No good can come from this discussion however well intended.
