Mr. Teacher
Had a job interview today in West London (not naming the school).
Got it.
Hurrah for me.
Going to be a proper ICT Teacher as of September 2005.
Quite a "challenging" school, but will hopefully be up to the task... apparently they liked me because I was "energetic" and "eager to do the job well".
The fact I was on a sugar high from glugging coca cola all day probably helped me being energetic. I didn't tell them that though.
£25k starting salary and a free laptop. Not that that's important, but if I used all the teacher jargon about the job you guys wouldn't understand it or care, so that's an indication of the job in comparison to others.
The pay is high because it's an incentive (London jobs aren't very popular amongst teachers), plus the school is being moved into a huge new complex.
I'm pretty chuffed.
Although I'm still wondering if I'm up to such a huge job - London schools are renowned for being difficult to teach in. Time will tell, I suppose!

Re: Mr. Teacher
A good friend of mine is teaching (Second year of degree) in a school in West London.
She, however, says the kids she has to deal with are a nightmare.
I pray yours are better behaved.
Congrats though.

Re: Mr. Teacher
I suppose i can't really comment as i've only been to the 'posher' areas of West London and the 'shitter' areas of East London.
I know there are some drab areas in West London, i don't know however, if there any are decent areas in East London.
I'm off to Oslo in the summer so i take i should stick to the West side then?

Re: Mr. Teacher
Who knows.
Central London is harder than Greater London though (I'll be in Greater London) apparently.
And no, I haven't been fired. I'm just in school placements at the moment, I'm not employed.

the east wind is the prevailing wind in the northern hemisphere )if anyone feels like posting that its also prevailing in the southern, don't. no body cares about the southern hemisphere, its a big shit hole)
as such cities in the northern hemisphere invariably have their poor quater located in the eastern section, because the smell wafts that way.

I'm moving schools to stalk you, Mister Kat. Actually, I probably could seeing as I haven't formally accepted any post-16 options yet! Though I have applied to a college abroad but this'd work too!

Congratulations TomKat, I think it'll be good experience for you. As long as you don't completely lose it, then when you want to move schools in a few years time, you'll be in a better position to choose. Just don't get stressed

Re: Mr. Teacher
congrats Tomkat.
I sure any new teacher job is going to be difficult. In West London they are supposed to be terrible schools but it you teach well I'm sure it wont be that bad.
My Uncle use to teach in East London, his only problem was getting out of the job in London because of the lack of teachers. However, that was 9years ago. London schools are really well funded now.
goodluck.

If we are going to have the sort of education system we have now, we might as well teach kids something vaguely applicable in the workplace. It's fair to say that I learnt more in my IT GCSE that was useful to me now than I learnt in English, German, Geography or Maths GCSEs.

I fully agree.
Teaching someone how to use simple things like Google, especially to a decent level, is, to me, infinitely* more useful than learning, say French both in terms of how much you'll use it and how much more productive it makes you.

There are a surprising amount of little tricks that common users of Google such as you or I use.
Stuff like putting in just the required words, and not entire sentences that might give crap results. Stuff like using alternative words to find your answer. Things like not just going to the first link and copy-pasting info from there.
Then there's all the stuff like "AND", "OR", using ".
I did a lesson with a bunch of year 8s last term, just asking them to find general trivia from the internet that I set. Quite a few of them struggled with things you or I would find in a matter of seconds.

Yes, the skills that you would acquire in learning to use google most effectively as a resource (ability to search information effectively, knowledge of sources et al) are useful in other subjects.
Learning French is highly specific, and doesn't teach any abilities that are transferrable.

I cannot for the life of me understand how comprehension of Google's many (admittedly marvellous) facets has suddenly become more useful than a foreign language. It is perfectly reasonable to suggest that a good understanding of a foreign language is a great addition to anyone's CV. We can all see that Europe is becoming more integrated. No matter the proliferation of the English language, it is safe to say that other not all of Europe speaks English as their first language (or wants to).
Moreover, and equally as importantly, an understanding of a foreign language broadens one's outlook on life; culturally, and academically, in terms of literature, films etc.
I cannot see how this is even debatable.

Re: Mr. Teacher
Learning languages is fairly transferable, especially with so few native english speakers actually knowing any basic grammar. To most people though, who aren't going to have jobs requiring a foreign language to be spoken, being able to find useful information from the Internet is going to be a lot more useful.

I learned more transferrable knowledge in Latin than I did in French, which is quite sad really. For French.

We had one of those at uni. It was listed as a compulsary IT session so i thought it would cover some complex statistical software for biology or something along those lines. When it started off with 'this is Google and people use it to search for things on the internet' i knew i was in for a boring day .
