I don't know if it was because of the stats or if it was down to being my first round, but r3 was the best.
I just loved killing PDS whores with a few hundred BS and a few thousand Ghosts.
And for the people who didn't like BS they just had mass Frigs.
And things died if I remember correctly.

I think its interesting how much the popularity of stats is made by the round - R3 was fun so everyone (well, 40% of the people at the time ) chose those stats, whilst R5 stats (Which imo are the best War/Science stats of all the <R6 rounds) has atm a single vote. tbh, the R3 stats werent that good, but they were made fun by the players.

Single race stats were never any good realy but clearly best in r5 when they had some real balance for the first time in PA history.
Therefore r6 stats are the ones for me, mayby a slight terran edge in that round but good overall stats. Would combine better with the current mil scans maybe.
Round 7 was too good for ziks (on giant ships donation feast) and r8 is far too good for Xans. The upgrade for the Xans who weren't that bad in r7 with the fixup for the sentinal is huge. That combined with current mil scan making it easy for them to send great fakes is too much.

Either r3 or r7 stats, damn hard choice to be honest.

Well, I think those who voted for R2/3 are those that were sucessful in those round with easy stats and big universe. Now you have to work harder for your roids and formerly sucessful player turn into player like everyone else.
Imo R7 stats were pretty well balanced and for that I`d choose them. In addition R7 support 4 races, I love that evelution of the game very much!!! R6 stats were not so good balanced and didn`t support different pod classes. R8 stats made xan with its sentinel as C-drop very strong...

R2 for meh
ive said it elsewhere, but i dug the spectrum of ships: three classes of fighter (int, phantom, dagger), savage visible and invisible friggies, spiders and thieves .
I will give the Zik option a whirl next game..but it just wont be the same

I have to say rnd7; those Terrans just suited my play style so well...
Other than that, rnd3 stats were fun to play with later on in uw ;-) But I still do hate PDS that shoots first, it's too good imho and it means you have to resort to bashing quite often to avoid huge losses :-/

Any pre-race set of stats.
[rant]
Those rounds there were actually strategic decesions to be made throughout the game.. now with the races you have two fun days of deciding what race to take and contemplating differences; and then you're stuck the rest of the round with whatever you choose..
R3 had bs/ghost, ghost/frig/cargo , ghost/frig , daggers / frigs, all viabable combos.. lots of choices throughtout the game... you also had cloaked ships along with normal ships; unlike nowadays when you know when there is cloaked ships incoming..Those days there actually were surprises!
In short: in retroperspective Races only removed choice and has generally caused the game to suck even more. [/rant]

I disagree with you hyfe, I wrote a good and serious plee as to why but my comp at school crashed(crappy comp dept, why can't they just let it over to the schools pa players? ^^) so I won't bother re-writing it all, just now, there's a good explanation to why races offer more choices through-out the game :P

advantages of having races: - Probably more diverse targets; which in turn really does mean more workable tactics available..
- Potentially more advantages of groups and players co-operating and choosing races which complements each other..
- Bigger chance of people having holes in their fleet; (it'll be easier agreeing on a 'standard receipt' for building with only one race)
Well..so to be more precise..I'm not really against the idea of races; i'm against the idea of the races being *so* damn specialized..
sure: Cathaar could have the widest range of emp ships..
sure: xand could have the widest range of cloaked ships..
but give every race something of each.. it *will* add to the game.
give everyone a spider, interceptor, andvorian bomber and thief! and i think you'll see alot more viable alternatives for tactics (and make all pods be eta 8 ) [edit]actually.. on second thought... having all pods eta 24-30 would suit me better [/edit]

lol, well, eta 24-30 might be a tad harsh ;-) and imho xanda needs it's eta7 to be worth the effort...
Hmm, well, if you want several different tactics take a ziko, they've got pretty much endless tactics through stealing(convince a friend to play a fleet-farm for you so you can go with whatever tactic you see fit). Other than that cathaar also now has a quite effective array of killers ships, xanda having any non-cloak ships would be pretty pointless as it defeats their purpose of being the "un-seen" race and terran has a varid array of killer ships, though admittadly this could be experimented with a tad, giving some more variation...
At any rate, there are ~2 decent ways for playing every race at this time(personally I could could never imagine using terrans ships between co-fr or xanda ships above co...or cathaar above fr for that mather, but the options are there even though I might not like them).
In short, there are options, plenty of them, and for a more wholesome change in the game I think we might want to give the creators time until r10 and the total re-vamp of the game(PLZ ATLEAST CONSULT THE STRATEGY DEPT ABOUT ALL VITAL CHANGES IN THE SYSTEM!).
O how I hate sitting at school waiting for class to start...

In others words: you need two accounts to play them decently..that really doesn't sound very balanced in my ears. It also does promote cheating big-time.

Most the fun of having cloaked ships where the times those ships showed up unexceptecdly. With xands you always know there are cloaked ships. Being able to send a incoming which reads 500 ships and suddenly is 5k would be fun .. although not that very efficient at first glance its another possibility for players to create more tactics

just because things are decent now isn't an argument against bettering them..

bah: considering creators past perfomance the 'wait until r10' doesn't ring very well in my ears .. they ought to hire chax, tactitus, mad'n'risky and a couple of others to do changes for them
i'm just arguing for fun though .. had to stay home from work and lectures at uni these two days so i'm kinda bored

lemme go get the number for two former top20 zikos that didn't farm a single ship and you can tell them the race is weak...

True enough it added some tactical charm to it, but in the whole you pretty much knew when to expect it if you were worth ****e, and if you didn't...it's just a way of making the game harder for the new players imho :-/

ofcourse not, did I say so? though the fact stands that we've "been there, done that", what we have today is what was felt to be an improvement over what we had in the past, it doesn't allways work out, but sometimes it's an ok choice. imho you'd get bored a lot sooner if there was just the one race and two or more ways of playing, as is you need to adapt a new way of thinking every time you try playing another race.(though imho you can do some new races every now and then and not have the same races ever round, there was an idea discussed for ********* about a continueing universe history with race-scores for each round and an array of 8-10 races that would be used through-out the rounds but onyl a few of them at a time, also a random race selection, meaning you'd be given a race at random, something I personally found to be a fun idea and a true test of skills and would mean a more balanced universe with a about equal ratio of each race and thus making each race ever more playable ;-)

True enough, that's what i ment by the strategy dept., the people who've devoted themselves to the study of stats for several rounds now. After all, most of the PA-team are former players that were promoted into the team due to their dedication to the game, so why not?
