Just a random thought i had last night

"How much money would make you 'happy' and what would you spend it on?"

£1.2mil Town house in Glasgow

£200k upgrades to Town House (ie putting in a swimming pool etc)

£150k "Highland Retreat" cottage type place

£130k Cars (DB9 and Lotus Elise)

£1mil starting up my own company

£1.7mil in investments (to give me about 15k a year spending money)

So about £4.5mil all in (although i would be able to "squeek by" with less if i HAD to)

a one-off payment of £1m would mean i could live off the interest for the rest of my life.
I'm not greedy.
If I get a low paid but enjoyable job i'd easily be pulling in 40k a year.

Of course... any extra money on top of that would be even nicer :)

15k a year spending money ... that's very little for such a house .. and what are you going to eat and wear?

15k / year is just a "back-up".

I'd be wanting to earn lots more with my company.

Do i really have to be the first one to say that money doesn't equal happiness? :(

I'd agree with Ste but seriously doubt i'm going to get £1 million from anywhere and I intend on being happy for the forseeable future so I dunno.

i've heard you can live without having to work ever again when you have 4 million euros.
now, as i need some extra luxuory in my life to be happy, i think i'd need about 4 million extra.
so i'd need 8 million euros in total.

most of it would be spent on a nice, big, modern house with all facilities and a big garden.
first priority is a nice place to live, on a good location. (for example southern Germany, northern Italy or just outside Barcelona).

the rest of the money i'd spend on travelling (holidays) and having a good life in general. ie good food, drinks, cloths, music, movies, a decent car, visiting events etc.

I don't want to fag this thread up too much but you can be happy and not rich. I'm sure most people would prefer to be in a loving relationship* and financially comfortable than mega rich and lonely.

Though a swimming pool would be cool :p

being in a loving relationship is fantastic, however, not having to worry about money in that relationship is great as well

Only if I have to be the second.

If I had to pick an amount though, I'd say AUD $10,000. Enough to start a new life interstate.

Re: Just a random thought i had last night

$30,000 CAD would pay off my student loans/bills/cc's and make me debt free (for the moment anyway). but i'd be content with less than that.. $5,000 would pay off one loan and i'd be happy. or $2000 would pay off my cc's and i'd be happy. or $500 would pay off a couple bills and i'd be happy.
guess what i'm saying is any little bit helps and i'd be happy just finding $5 on the street.

Buy Rovers - £30 million
Take them to Premiership title - £250 million
Keep them there - £200 million

Half a billion should just about do it but other than that someone paying off my student debt and giving me a few grand to have a holiday and see me through till I get a decent job would make me very happy :).

Yeah.
But still, you're right, money can't buy happiness. I bet most of the worlds rischest are not happy, mainly because you always want more and possibly because being succesful sometimes leaves little time for other things like family. I don't think extra money would make me happy.

Having said all that - I think about £10mill and an annual income of around £250,000.

  1. Collect an amount of money equivalent to 100 of a suitably sized coin. In your case, I suggest the 50 cent coin. If you are in a position to afford it, 1 or 2 euro coins might be better options.
  2. Go to a bank and acquire 100 pieces of the coin, preferably in a roll (perhaps several).
  3. Take off one of your socks.
  4. Drop the roll(s) (alternatively 100 coins) into your sock.
  5. Wait in a dark place until someone wanders by. When they do, jump out and club them like a baby seal with your money.
  6. (Optional) Laugh maniacally and denounce your opponent for being a poor bastard who does not have enough money to fight back (obviously this works best if you win).

When I said "enough to have a money fight" I meant enough so that I could pay someone to change their name to 'money' and fight for me.

Re: Just a random thought i had last night

id just want enough for a decent sized house in the middle of london (lots) and enough spending money to update everything in the house whenever it became obsolete.

oh, and lots and lots of money for drugs whenever i wanted them

actually, i have stated before (half seriously) that my dream would be to be rich enough to be one of those people who can do heroin and crack and be addicted and be fine because i always have enough money :) But i imagine a lifetimes supply of drugs would come to a LOT.

Re: Just a random thought i had last night

Enough money for me not to worry about money would make me happy.

I don't think I can quantify that amount though.
