Sadly, thats not enough.
As far as I've understood, the doc format is close enough to a memory dump of the state word was in. What it means though, is that deep down in the binary file, you have interesting information such as 'all former paths the document has been saved at' and various other assortet tidbits that really shouldn't be there.
As said earlier, export to PDF is the only good alternative (if you want to keep that formatting that is, if not, just use normal text). Using Open Office is probably the simplest solution, however other alternatives are Adobe Distiller or writing in printerformat (ps) and using ps2pdf afterwards.
If your friend is not a geek, I think it's possible to copy from Word, and paste it into outlook as html. That should also remove all traces without ruining formatting too much, however not everybody enjoy getting html-mail.
