SETI, AVONE, MIRE. These programs, all dedicated to answering the question that we all wondered, were we alone? For centuries we looked up into the night sky, wondering if we were alone in the great emptiness out there. As we advanced, trading rocks for sticks, sticks for slingshots, slingshots for gunpowder, gunpowder for plasma, we kept looked up into the night sky, watching great constructs of metal and ceramics breaking free from mother Earth’s gravity towards the distant stars.

With the advent of both cyro-technology, and the discovery of a host of new worlds during the beginning of the 22nd century, we extended our hand towards these virgin worlds. Colonies blossomed, expanded, and in turn sent out their own colony ships towards other, more distant systems. The discovery of hyperspace only fueled the rush outwards. New resources were discovered, technology was invented on the fly. Earth, the former overpopulated, polluted homeworld of our race was revitalized, healed, her great burden eased as millions of people flocked towards the stars, slowly becoming a paradise.

As we expanded, we continued our search, looking for signs of life other than our own. The planets we moved into had plants, bacteria, some even had animals, yet none has sentient life as we defined it. We dug into the planets, searching their ancient past, finding nothing for the longest time. Then, in what has now become a date well known, October 6th, 2266, we found evidence of life before ours.

Deep inside a planet, we found the remains of an alien spacecraft, unlike anything we could have dreamed of. Hardly anything could be salvaged from it, for it had rested in its final landing pad for what we estimated to be in the order of ten thousand years. Finding the craft, despite the lack of anything we could salvage, fueled our efforts to discover what happened to the builders of the ship. Unknown to us, the builders already knew what we had found.

We sent out even more probes, more ships into the deep unknown. The suddenly, ships started missing. At first, rouge pirates were to blame. Then without warning, communication with our outermost colony ceased. Ships sent to investigate were never heard from again. Then another colony went missing, this time however, a single ship made it back. That ship, most of the crew dead, barely operating, served its purpose in sounding the alarm. Our question, were we alone out there, had been answered, and that answer changed everything.

Thanks to the surviving ships warning, we were able to establish defenses, and when these mysterious creatures attacked, we were ready. The battle over the skies of Sigma Proxima III lasted for days, as the two forces clash, retreat, and clash again. Ground fighting took place as the invading forces sent troops to the planet below. Finally, after 3 long days of fighting, the invaders were driven off. We thought we had won, that we had proven our mettle, but a mere 2 days after the battle, the tides of hell opened.

Great numbers of the invaders attacked at once, making the previous battle look more like a skirmish. Our defenses were swept away and Sigma Proxima III fell to them.

For the next 24 years, we have been fighting a loosing war. We make then fight for every inch of space, but their numbers seem limitless. We have made strides, came up with technology to combat them. Ground battles we had the advantage in, but in space they were the dominate force. We found out they call themselves the Forsaken as translated to our language, though nicknamed the Swarm. They were a race that could be classified as “evil”. Parasitical, they were small, worm like creatures that could take over humanoid hosts. The battles we have fought shown that they use a wide variety of species as hosts, including now humans. They showed no hesitation, only the utmost lack of respect for life. In their eyes, we were little more than cattle.

The war… the greatest war we have ever been in, is now drawing to a close. An entire generation has been raised fighting this war. And now, with the enemy at the gates of humanities homeworld, we find ourselves looking at our end. Our options have dwindled, and we are left with… nothing.

The answer to the question if we were alone in this universe…….. that answer changed everything……

~Final Journal Entry of Rear-Admiral Sline – September 21st, 2391

*Walking through the corridor leading the main operations center of Utopia ********, Admiral Bastir looked at his data-pad, containing the latest in the official fleet news. One of the key items was the death of Rear-Admiral Sline. Cause of death, self-inflicted plasma blast to the side of his head. Combined with the bottle of genuine Earth whisky, circa 2045 emptied, and the final journal entry, the case was open shut.*

*Shaking his head sadly, Bastir understood why Sline choose that exit route. The latest intelligence was looking grim, far too grim to be considered sane. The Swarm were about to invade humanities homeworld. Their fleet according to recon was massive, more than enough to annihilate the few surviving Earth ships that remained. Reaching the main operations center, Bastir entered the main operations center.*

*Looking at the many young faces that snapped to attention as he entered, Bastir could only sigh mentally as how the youth of this generation were caught up in a war for the very survival of the human race. Saluting them, he set his datapad in his belt holster and nodded to the other Admirals standing around the main table. Admiral Morgan, the youngest on, commander of the 3rd defense fleet looked up from his datapad. Admiral Hineal nodded simply, her features drawn and worn out. Her 6th-wing fleet was decimated at the recent Alpha Centarui battle, and she was still recovering from that battle. Finally was intelligence Rear-Admiral Osina, his face reflecting his 80 years of service, easily the oldest ranking officer in the entire Earth forces.*

Bastir: “Admirals, we all know the news. Hell, Sline splattered his burnt brains over his desk upon seeing the newest intelligence. We need options. What’s the status of the hyperspace inhibitors?”

Hineal: “We need another week to get them online at least. Maybe a few days, but anything sooner needs a bleeding miracle.”

Morgan: “We don’t have a week, we might only have 3 maybe 4 days maximum if intelligence is correct about the Swarm.”

Osina: “It’s correct, no doubt about that.”

Bastir: “So… that’s it then. Earth is doomed.”

Morgan: “We must be able to do something, anything!”

*Sighing, Bastir looked over at Osina, who nodded once gravely. Turning back towards Admiral Morgan, Bastir mentally braced himself.*

Bastir: “There is something. Something that at the start of this war, we set into motion. Something that we hope will save our race as a whole.”

2 Days Later – Utopia ********, Conference Room 3

Entering the conference room, you look around in a slight daze. The orders were swift and sudden, get your ship to Utopia ******** ASAP, and get to the conference room. Upon docking, you were shocked by the swarms of repair technicians that boarded your ship. Repairs were tough to come by, both because lack of trained personal and resources, yet to you it seemed they were pulling out all the stops in getting your ship fully repaired.

Grabbing a nearby seat, you sit down as an Admiral walks in and motions for silence. You recognize him as Admiral Morgan. He looks tired, worn and stressed, but those features were common on everyone’s face. Hitting a few buttons on his table, a tactical hologram of the Sol system appeared, with the neighboring systems spinning around it. Patches of color fill it, red spreading around the Sol system, the red indicating enemy forces. Letting you all look at the hologram, the Admiral beings to speak.

Admiral Morgan: “Ladies and Gentlemen, this represents our state of affairs. We are surrounded, most nearby systems having been conquered by the Swarm. We know they plan on making a move against us, and we know it will be within a day or two. Right now, we are planning the largest defensive battle in the history of humanity. The media is already calling it “The Battle of the Line”. Five-Thousand of our ships, ranging from mostly fighters and gunships to some of our destroyers and even a few retro-fitted explorers will be fighting for Earth. This fleet will lose.”

Pausing for a few minutes, the Admiral picks up a glass of water and takes a sip before continuing.

Admiral Morgan: “Their primary mission will be to STALL the enemy fleet as long as possible. We know we can’t win, thus we are taking measures to ensure the survival of our species, and eventually, strike back.”

Waving his hand again, an image of a ship appears. Dwarfing even an Explorer class vessel, it looks to be a combination of several different types of ships, ranging from old to brand new.

Admiral Morgan: “What you are looking at here is the “Angel” class Cruiser. Ten kilometers in length from bow to stern, she is a combination of our experimental “Warlock” cruiser chassis and ancient cryo-ships. We have 5 of these ships, each of them able to hold twenty thousand people in deep cryo-sleep. Fifty thousand people we can transport.”

Another wave of his hand, and the hologram shifts view towards a map of this section of the galactic arm. A blue line appears, leading from the Sol system reaching outwards towards unknown space.

Admiral Morgan: “Two years ago, a long-range tender on deep recon discovered this system while fleeing a Swarm attack. The Swarm followed the tender into the system, officially on maps as GA-234. This system is unusual for it is completely enclosed in a nebula. Inside was a complete solar system, including a Earth type planet, a little cold, but it can support humans. In addition it has several gas giants and an asteroid belt rich with resources. What makes this different though is the fact this nebula generates a radiation field, a type of radiation that is nearly instantly lethal to the Swarm. We have been unable to reproduce this radiation however, and it seems to be a localized effect.”

Taking a deep breath, Admiral Morgan looks over you and the other Captains.

Admiral Morgan: “Earth is doomed. We have no chance of winning. Thus we are activating a series of protocols. One Hundred thousand of the best and brightest in all areas are entering deep cyro-sleep. These ships will transport them to GA-234 where they will enhance the basic research station we managed to establish, and expand it into a fully-functional colony. These ships are a hybrid of such diverse technologies, and designed with redundancy of the cyro-systems the main priority, they are completely unarmed. They are however equipped with a series of Mark III prototype shield generators, but that it not enough. They need an escort to get them safely to their destination. Ladies and Gentlemen, you have been picked to be their escort. We are keeping the escort as small as possible to avoid attracting attention. As we speak your ships are being fully repaired and restocked, replacement crew members assigned, supplies loaded onboard. Your mission is to defend them at ALL cost. Loading hundred-thousand people is a daunting task, and we won’t be done for at least another day. We are cutting this close. The main reason the ‘Line fleet is staying here to fight is to cover our ships. In 12 hours we will be announcing to all planets in this system about the Swarm attack. We will try to evacuate as many people as possible, but we doubt they will be able to escape. What we plan on doing is using the ‘Line fleet to buy our fleet enough time to escape, at which point they will attempt to pull off a organized withdraw and evac the combat zone. We doubt that many ships will be able to escape, thus support from them is NOT to be counted upon. The survival of the human race is in your hands here. You have 24-hours to prepare yourselves, for that is the minimal amount of time needed before all selected individuals have been transported to the Angels. Good luck.”

Technology level of this thread is equivalent to the TV series Babylon 5. Solid projectiles are still being used, medical technology is not perfect, and there are no shields. Actually, there ARE shields, but they are prototype devices that are not available on the market yet (Note: there are exceptions to this, but only at my discretion).

The above link will take you to all the ship-buying information. The website is split into six sections.

• Ships – This section tells you which ship you can buy, along with all the needed information about them.
• Weapons – The available weapons. In order to use a weapon, you first have to buy it, then you must have enough slots to put it into your ship. The power column tells you how much damage it causes, and accuracy tells you on average how much of that power will hit. Those calculations are done using random numbers and my personal preference at the time.
• Armor – The available types of armor available to your ship. In order to calculate the price and protection given, you find the Armor Modifier your ship is, then multiple that number to both the cost and protection. Those results of those products will be the cost and protection given respectively.
• Fighters & Support Craft – These are the fighters and other support craft you can choose. You must have enough slots to fit them onto the ship. These ships can do three roles, which are anti-fighter, defensive, and offensive.
• Accessories – Items that can help your ship out.
• Crew & Troops – Okay. On the ships page you see that you have a minimal crew and a maximum crew. You need at LEAST the minimal number of crewmembers in order for your ship to be approved. Adding more crew till you reach the max limit will help your ship out. As for the troops, these guys help defend your ship and can launch attacks on other ships during combat to capture and/or sabotage them.

What is the deal with a lot of the Accessories?

You've got errors with the numbers of Slots being misrepresented by percentages, and plus the Weapons Enhancements are all wrong in price.

Please 'splain what's going on?

Percentages mean that that particular upgrade takes x% of your TOTAL accessory slots. (aka, you have 100 slots, item takes 10%, ergo you need 10 slots).

As for the price of the weapon enhancements, that's a typo (I finished this last night, give me some credit).

James' history has indeed lead to somewhere where he could be "The right man in the right place at the right time." From an early age, he was familiar with starships of all types, due to his upbringing. History
Ro's real acomplishments began at the age of 21, nothing before this was deemed relevent for this report. He graduated from Trinon tech university, the joint youngest to recieve his masters in planar physics and quantum mechanics simultaineously, and by age 24 had been drafted by the military to aid in development of advanced energy technology to yield lasting energy sources and defensive shielding for their ships. He was researching his placement until the age of 26, when he was flown out using a cryoship to the planet of Osiris, situated on the deep edge of the galactic rim. During these years, the contact with the Swarm grew into a mounting problem, discovered soon after as they attacked the planets in the systems nearby osiris. However, research continued, with all personell of use to the military being evaculated, leaving only scientists and a handful of civilains behind, Ro amongst them. Pushing his work into swift use, Ro canibalised a grounded Asimov explorer vessel, and retrofitted it with a large selection of battery units, neutron reactors and themite power relays, along with a state of the art, prototype hologramatic AI unit, canibalised from the main computer on Osiris beta site. With 8 months, a vessel equipped to handle space was launched, a matter of days before the swarm, as predicted, annihilated the planet.

Since that moment, Pandoras, or Toy box as she has been affectionately nicknamed, as been prowling space praying on destroyed military ships, pirates or colonies to steal and canibalise what it needs, including weapons, it's small array of anti fighter shrapnel weapons, and accomedated the remnants of a handful of military vessels, retrofitting their armour plating into a mishmash of crossing plates and localised protection barriers. Hydroponics and simulated meat farming areas have been set up on the habiation decks, and research is continued from the lower deck labs co-ordinated by engineering. This small settlement as it stood, hung at around 600 people, 100 civilian researchers, 500 elite crewmembers. However, it was not long before they were caught by the main fleet, and brought before Admiral Morgan for briefing. The civilans, given a place on the colony ships, and the crew, with the addtion of 20 elite military members, has been retained, to act as a protectorate for the angels...

History - The Aedaron asteroid belt was a prime site for adamantium mining, and boasted a healthy community of miners, primarily freelance. Its lack of official backing meant that security was neither large scale nor powerful, however, and when the Swarm attacked, early in the war, the community could do little to defend itself. Lone miners were killed rapidly by their claims, and, despite a bitter effort, even the primary settlement eventually fell to the vicious aliens.
Of all the capital ships mustered to defend the miners and the few entrepeneurs who had settled in the supply port, only two survived, along with a multitude of smaller transport and pleasure vessels- a prospector's ship, laden with refugees which rushed top speed to safer space, and an ore freighter captained by a local born spacer, Novalis. Packed with untrained refugee miners, the Aedaron Star (as it was then called) faced a tough time, but its crew soon applied all of their effort and technical skill to staying alive, and over time have grown to a coherent, disciplined, and bitterly vengeful crew, using their knowledge of engineering to modify the old freighter into a warship, and the transport hauler to an assault craft capable of bringing them to the enemy. Tested in battle time and again against the foul forsaken, these former miners seek to prevent the fate of their former comrades falling upon others- even to the point of dying in battle to prevent the Swarm's wishes becoming concrete.

History : Anthony was born to a moderatly poor family and was brought up with many old ideals, the ideas of being patriotic, honest and chivlrous. Chosing to become a Military tactician Anthony was give a third in command position onbord the "Deciever" Cruiser, during his stay the Cuiser engadged in several battles agaist the Swarm each time being forced to retreat untill in one final battle the ships main reactor was damadged and the order to abandon ship was given by the Captain, as Anthony left the ship the captain gave him crucial information gathered on the enemy ships, this unfortunattly was lost during the lifepods retrat from the resulting explosion of the "Deciever".

In a later command Anthony managed to hold of several Swarm ships as other friendly ships retrated, for this he was awarded the second highest medal of bravery, and the command of the new ship "Anubis" with the mission of escorting the "Angel" cruisers to the star system discovered to hold the key to defeating the Swarm and saving the human race...

As the final 24 hours passed Captain Anthoyn checked and re-checked every system on board his new ship, "How are the checks comming?" Anthony asked the tired looking Tactical officer. "Every system checks out sir, just like they did the last time..." he replied in a depressed voice. "Good, go get some rest, that applies to all of you," said Anthony to the bridge crew all of which looked battered and tired, "But i want you back two hours befor flight time", he said this as he himslef went to get some rest..

Might I point out that you could EASILY fit all of that and more (except for the troop count) into a Corvette hull, rather than a Frigate hull, and save an assload of cash on the Ship? :P

Reaching into the top drawer of his desk onboard the Deathdealer, Joseph McKinley pulled out the .45 Colt handgun that he always kept there. The ancient pistol was, despite its great age, in serviceable condition, a fact that Joseph once took great pride in. Now, however, Joseph wasn’t sure he could exactly take pride in the weapon that was about to end his life.

Cradling the weapon in his left hand, Joseph held it under his desk lamp, admiring for one last time how the carefully polished metal reflected the light. Then, with a sigh of resignation, Joseph firmly grasped the weapon with his left hand. Using his right hand, he worked the clasp holding the clip in place, and allowed it to slide out of the bottom of the handgun’s grip. Pulling the clip fully out of the pistol, Joseph examined it to ensure that the bullets were in good condition and ready to fire, and then rammed the clip back into the handgun.

The bullets were not exactly the same as the .45 pistol once used, due to the obvious fact that such bullets had gone out of production long ago. Instead, they were a homemade version that Joseph produced himself, with the aid of a few of the Black Eagle marines and the Deathdealer’s modest Machine Shop. Joseph had tested such bullets on the firing range, and as a result knew that they would not fail to exit the gun barrel, penetrate the front of his skull, and exit out the back with enough force to leave a grapefruit-sized hole in his head.

With the clip back in place, Joseph moved his right hand up to the slide, in order to work it back and chamber the first round. As he did so, the movement of his hand caused his eyes to focus on the line of text etched into the metal: To my beloved Joseph: husband, father, and protector. The words brought back a flood of memories, and Joseph actually sobbed before he clenched his teeth together and used the pain to return to the present. He had a family once . . . and he killed them. He had a home once . . . and he destroyed it. He even had a future once . . . but now that was gone as well, nothing more than dust and ash along with everything else. High Command would be calling within the hour, almost certainly to demand his resignation.

Joseph seemed to recall that there was an appropriate motto for his situation from ancient history: “Death before Dishonor”. Death before dishonor . . . that seemed about right. Although he had been under orders, he had leveled the colony of Tetra Genus, killing all inhabitants to prevent them from becoming infested by the Swarm. From that point on, he had become something of a loose cannon within the Fleet, although he hadn’t been relieved as captain of the Deathdealer. Until now, at least.

There was no possible why High Command could overlook his latest offense, a deliberate act of disobeying a direct order to retreat, in order to hold the Swarm off of a civilian freighter until it could enter Hyperspace. With resources stretched as thin as they were these days, an operational warship was worth far more than a civilian transport, even if that transport was full of 10,000 innocent civilians. Surrounded by Swarm ships, heavily damaged, and with no support from the rest of the Fleet due to a retreat being called, it was all Joseph could do to keep the Deathdealer in one piece, let alone protect the freighter. The civilian ship was torn apart only seconds from entering Hyperspace, leaving Joseph will nothing to do but order an immediate jump to Hyperspace before the remaining Swarm ships could turn their full attention to the Deathdealer. A rebel, a murderer, and a failure. It would be a great service to humanity if he were to remove himself from the equation right now. A great service to humanity, yes . . . and a great release for him.

Having stopped for a moment to reminisce about the most recent events in his life, Joseph shook his head and then worked the slide back, chambering the round and taking another step towards oblivion. He then placed the tip of the barrel against his left temple, and now there was only one final step. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Joseph closed his eyes, and prepared himself for oblivion as his left index finger squeezed back the trigger. A moment later, Joseph’s eyes flew open as he realized that his finger was having a great deal of difficulty in pulling back the trigger. The trigger would only go back about a third of the way, before stopping solid as if it was stuck.

Mystified, Joseph lowered the pistol, and shifted his grip so that he could examine the pistol better. After a quick minute of study, Joseph had found the problem: the safety was on. With a bitter laugh, Joseph threw the .45 Handgun onto his desk in disgust. He couldn’t even succeed at killing himself. A moment later, the comm system on his desk began to beep. Tapping the activation pad, Joseph said, “Yes?”

“Captain, we’ve just got a call from High Command. We’re to report to Utopia immediately.”

Joseph sighed, smiled sadly, and said, “Very well. Set course for Utopia, and give me an ETA once we’re in Hyperspace.”

“Yes sir.”
