The Sol War

ND takes on...

The Sol War

NB: The back story is very long, so by all means feel free not to read it now (or at all). If you want to skip to the relevant part, look for the next italic marker.

The year is 2028...
The early-mid twenty first century is not the futuristic utopia that the people of bygone decades predicted it would be. With the planet being far less stable than it once was, in 2028 the world economy is in dire straights. Stock indices in the financial capitals of the world drop by dozens of points on a daily basis. Mistrust and xenophobia run rife throughout the continents as the United Nations becomes less and less reputable every day. National society is indeed, by this time, in its twilight, although before the summer of 2028 none would have seen any further than a period of economic difficulty...

In June of 2028, a series of well co-ordinated, precise and devastating terrorist attacks racks Israel, killing over a hundred and destroying the fragile peace hanging over the Middle East. Israel's right-wing government quickly places blame on Hamas. However, Hamas denies the attacks, and security experts speculate that the bombings were too well-cordinated and planned to be the work of the Palestinian Jihad. Israel, backed by the US, demands that Hamas admit responsibility for the attacks, and demands that the Palestinian government issue a full public apology for allowing them to happen. Analysis of the attacks by Israeli internal security reveals that the terrorists responsible were most likely funded by a foreign nation, but fail to give any indication as to which. Once again, the right-wing Israeli government pins blame firmly on Syria and Jordan, despite misgivings from intelligence chiefs, and demands a full public apology from them as well. Furious at being indited for attacks they did not commit, Syria and Jordan withdraw from the six-nation peace talks concerning the Palestinian issue. Hamas and other organisations involved in the Palestinian Jihad had never even been invited in the first place. No apology from Palestine, Jordan or Syria is forthcoming. On June 16th, 2028, for the first time in ten years, Israeli Defense Force armour rolls across the Palestinian border into Gaza and the West Bank. The fledgling Palestinian government is captured and impounded. A motion of comdemndation of Israeli handling of the situation is raised by several UN Security Council nations, but is quickly vetoed by the USA, with the nation's ambassador stating that the US would continue to support Israel's actions, intended to further the fight against terrorism and thus the security of its people. Israeli intelligence chiefs manage to trace the perpetrators of the attacks up one level, and arrests were quickly made and the detainees paraded in front of the media, but the damage was already done. Well over a hundred Palestinian civilians had perished during the Israeli invasion. At once, Palestine was again a nation occupied and aflame with the fires of righteous anger. A wave of suicide bombings directed against IDF personnel results in heavy casualties and the Israelies losing control of parts of Gaza. Israel strikes back hard and indiscriminately, often hitting civilians as well as Palestinian rebels. In Iraq, an American protectorate in all but name, old hatreds are revived as a series of demonstrations outside coalition bases around the country turn violent and are forcefully dissapated by troops. In Palestine, the violence escalates as the IDF recovers a series of advanced weapon systems from rebel soldiers, using them as evidence for foreign support. Israeli attack helicopter patrols intercept and destroy a convoy of vehicles inbound to Palestine from Syria carrying a large amount of weaponry. Israel immediately accuses Syria and Jordan of smuggling weaponry in for use by the Palestinian rebels, both nations again deny any form of involvement. Despite US and UN pleas for restraint, Israel declares war on Jordan and Syria, and on June 28th the IDF launches an all-out attack on both nations. Damascus falls on the first day, Amman on the second, as the Syrian-Jordanian forces are driven back in hopeless dissarray before the well-equipped and organised Israeli forces. Egypt declares war on Israel and attacks, but within two days of the assault Egyptian forces have been halted, having made little progress into Israel territory.

Islamic fundamentalist resistance movements spring up in occupied Jordan and Syria, with the governments of both now suspected to be hiding somewhere beyond the Iraqi border, and the already thinly-stretched Israeli Defense Force takes steady losses after having achieved stunning success over the conventional military opposition. Facing the possibility of totally losing control of the occupied territory, Israeli High Command orders a no-holds-barred policy on destroying the freedom fighters. Entire villages are levelled by cluster bombs as the IDF holes itself in and prepares to defend itself. Across the Middle East, and indeed the world, the Israel is met with hatred, some of which is also directed at the USA. Analysts the world over speculate that, had the USA adopted a hard line with Israel and allowed the UNSC condemnarion put forward on July 16th to go through, Israel would have backed down and the situation could have been diffused peacefully. In Iran, the conservative Islamic clerics recieve a massive boost in support from an enraged populace and sieze control of the government, condemning Israel and America and ordering all Moslem Arabs to rise up against Israel and the West in support of the occupied nations. As Egyptian forces are routed in the southwest and driven back through the Sinai, American troops in the Sunni Triangle of Iraq are forced to abandon bases garrisoned for three decades as thousands of people rise up in open revolt against the government. The Iraqi National Guard is completely overwhelmed, and they along with the US troops and the Iraqi government fall back on Basra, where the less severe uprisings have been prevented from spreading to the city and its immediate vicinity by British and Australian troops. Although they publicly insist that the situation will be under control as soon as reinforcements are brought in from other areas, Coalition generals immediately begin planning the air and naval evacuation of the remaining forces in Basra. During the early stages of the Iraqi Revolution, the US Army and Marine Corps takes over three hundred losses, with other Coalition nations losing around fifty between them. In Kuwait and Oman there are massive anti-American demonstrations, whilst Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates all publicly condemn the USA and Israel, and suspend oil sales to both. In Saudi Arabia, radical Moslem clerics preach the violent overthrow of the oppressive Americanist Sheik, and throughout the nation police forces struggle to contain a wave of anti-Western violence as poverty-stricken civilians turn on the symbols of rich Western culture that surround them, attacking hotels, oil company buildings and franchised commercial services. The Saudi government virtually loses control of the entire Red Sea coast as religious uprisings sieze control of Abha, Mecca and very nearly take Medina. Facing the possibility of losing access to Saudi oil fields, and to the Middle East as a whole, the US military rushes in reinforcements to relieve Saudi troops and its own, holed up inside their bases by an angry populace. On the day of July 8th, as America still runs high from July 4th celebrations, US Central Command announces a major redeployment of US forces, reducing deployment to Korea, Japan and its contribution to UN peacekeeping efforts and ending troop deployment in Germany and the rest of Europe (save for a few bases along the Atlantic nations and in the Mediterranean). Around 100,000 extra troops are mustered and sent to Saudi Arabia along with the reinforcements. Fearing for their own regimes, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and the U.A.E petition the UN for troops in order to prevent the chaos from spreading to their nations. The United Nations Security Council agrees, and in response passes Resolution 1824, detailing the deployment of over a hundred thousand UN peacekeepers to the non-afflicted countries in order to ensure that they remain stable. While India and Pakistan, the bastions of UN peacekeeping contributions for some time, dispatch troops to cover the UN-sanctioned efforts in the countries not yet suffering insurrection, it is clear that the Coalition has been more-or-less unnofficially charged with cleaning up the existing revolts. However, for the first time, there is anger among the people of Pakistan at its nations contribution to the UN effort. The people, seeing the trouble in the Middle East as being solely the fault of Israel and the United States' continued support of it, support a wave of demonstrations against President Mushariff - now a rapidly weakening old man - and his policies, accusing him of complying with the manipulative Americans in return for foreign aid. The now-once more hardline Iranian government, sensing a chance to weaken its eastern neighbour and expand its influence, quickly condemns the Mushariff regime in the eyes of Allah, and encourages religious uprising similar to those ongoing in the Middle East.

By August, things are looking worse still. In Saudi Arabia, US force - despite extensive experience in fighting non-conventional warfare - have been unsuccessful in their attempt to contain, much less erradicate, the religious insurrections in Saudi Arabia. Indeed, the area of US/Saudi control is shrinking rapidly as Egyptian regulars land on the now-lost Red Sea Coast to support the Moslem Saudi insurgents. The Israeli Defense Force contrinues to hold on to its gains, barely, as much of Gaza and the West Bank are reduced to gutted ruins infested with hostile PLA partisans, determined to either see their nation free or die fighting for it. The 40,000-strong Pakistani contingent of the UNSC peacekeeping force in Persian Gulf coast has been withdrawn as President Mushariff tries to keep control of a country that increasingly despises him. The remaining Indian UN peacekeepers have been largely unsuccessful in keeping the insurrections from spreading to the nations they were sent to protect, as those nations' own militaries suffer mass-desertion, with some ex-soldiers even joining the rebels. Oman is perhaps the only semi-stable nation left in the Middle East, as the British government sends a series of large-scale troop deployments to prop up its long-term ally and, with the help of Indian troops already stationed there, manages to prevent the spread of rebellion. By this time the United States has declared war on Iran - a defacto state of war having slready existed between them for some time - and Egypt - following the nation's support of the Saudi rebels. Iran has felt little of the war so far, apart from a few attacks by American strategic bombers on Tehran, but Egypt is hit hard in the opening days of August as two US Navy carrier groups move into position and began attacking, one from the Mediterranean and one from the Red Sea. US Marines conduct a series of spectacular raids on coastal military installations, while JS-10 aircraft execute presicion bombing strikes on government targets in Cairo. Already taking heavy losses to rapidly advancing Israeli troops in the Sinai, the Egyptian government begins mass-conscription in an attempt to defend itself. As the month goes on, Musharif loses control of all but a small area around the capital city of Karachi, as massive numbers of Pakistani troops defect to the rebels, taking their equipment with them. India and China stand by, wary of the threat of the Islamic fundamentalist rebels gaining control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, while America and the coalition are already too thinly spread to act. In the Middle East, Turkey caves to increasing US diplomatic pressure, and declares war on Iran and the rest of the loosely-interconnected alliance, dubbed the 'Arab Coalition' by many. Turkish troops attack across the Iranian border, but also across the Iraqi border into Kurdistan. Reports of genocide from the few remaining journalists there are largely ignored by a western populance focused on the mounting losses suffered by the coalition. After having achieved some success in driving back the rebels early in the month, the 200,000-strong Coalition force remaining in Basrah is once again put on the retreat. Quietly, Joint Command begins evacuating the first troops to Oman by sea and air.

By early September, rebel troops in Pakistan have begun the attack on Karachi, as a desparate Musarif conscripts virtually the entire male population of the city in an effort to save himself. However, against their own countrymen, many of them military-trained and equipped with modern military equipment, the conscripts are all but useless. By mid-September only a few pockets of die-hard loyalists remain, holing themselves up in downtown buildings, knowing that death is a certainty if they are captured. Musharif flees via a naval frigate to India, where he is immediately impounded, his fate pending desicion by the Indian congress. With the fundementalist movement spreading throughout central Asia, into Kazakhstan as well as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the other nations, India, China and Russia meet in secret three-way talks held in Beijing to discuss possible actions. The Pakistani nuclear arsenal of around 40 fission warheads is now at the disposal of the fundamentalists who, it is not difficult to see, will soon be in control of the rest of central Asia. The talks are inconclusive, with India's liberal Congress Alliance ruling party refusing to launch a pre-emptive strike and the Russian government refusing to risk destroying its improving international reputation. China, fearing that the united Central Asian nations will demand the return of land ceded to the now barely communist state at the turn of the 21st century, decides to act unilaterally. After a week of sending troops westwards by rail, China attacks Kyrgistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan simultaneously. The masses of well-equipped People's Liberation Army conscripts sweep aside meager resistance by the fundamentalists through sheer weight of numbers as Chinese generals, having adopted a hardline strategy in response to observation of the failed UN-coalition effort in the Middle East, indiscriminately level any and all settlements it comes across that have been found to harbour terrorists. Anyone found resisting, or suspected of resisting, is shot without trial. India petitions the UN Security Council to condemn Chinese conduct, but China vetoes the subsequent resolution, citing the UN's complete failure to contain the fundamentalist uprisings as the reason for its ruthless policies, which the Chinese government claims are necessary in order to defend the Chinese homeland. With the UN now clearly defunct in the eyes of the world, UN peacekeeping operations in the Middle East collapse, with the remaining Indian troops returning home just as the coalition evacuates its last troops from Basrah, with a collabourative force of marines from a number of nations fighting a desparate rearguard action that allows the last transports to escape, before themselves being evacuated by small attack craft. With US and Saudi troops having now lost control of everything westwards of Riyadh, the capital, the coalition is forced to review the serious possibility of having to withdraw completely from the Middle East. Turkey and Iran meet a stalemate around a hundred miles northwest of Tehran, as comparatively well-trained and equipped Turkish troops face off against masses of fanatically-loyal Iranian troops. The Israeli Defense Force takes control of the rest of the Sinai, save for a few remote pockets of Egyptian troops trapped against the coast, and commences artillery bombardment of several settlements across the Suez Canal. Beleagured Egyptian forces return fire, and after three civilian vessels are lost to stray shots, NATO - moved by UN indesicion - declares the entirity of the canal and the Red Sea off-limits to all civilian shipping. When it becomes evident that a lot of captains are attempting to make the run regardless, a French-led international fleet establishes a blockade around the mouth of the canal in the Mediterranean, while one of the US carrier task forces establishes a similar blockade at the mouth of the Red Sea. Israeli control of Syria and Jordan is weakned as foreign insurgents flood in from the neighbouring countries. Israel begins re-calling massive numbers of former conscripts (with national service having been compulsory virtually since the nation's birth) into the IDF, as the government emplaces a nighttime curfew on the homeland in a desparate attempt to halt the tide of suicide bombings and rebel attacks hitting Tel Aviv and other cities. The Peoples Liberation Army of China continues to sweep through central Asia, with advance armour formations having reached as far as the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, and Kabul having been captured following three days of vicious fighting. A few bands of fundamantalists hidden in the mountains of Kyrgistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan manage to cause considerable disruption to Chinese resupply efforts, but by-and-large the ruthless tactics employed by the invaders win out, though in the minds of the populace - if not in their actions - rebellion still runs high.

On September 16th, all hell breaks loose. As the sun begins to dawn on Shanghai, a second sun illuminates the city. A nuclear fission blast is triggered just north of the city's centre and, in but a few seconds, a good portion of the vast city is obliterated. The death toll is well into the millions. Simultaneously, missile-borne mid-range nuclear devices of the same description hit Dashnanbe in Tajikistan, which had become home to Chinese central command, and several Chinese air bases far behind the lines in China itself. In the chaos that ensues, the fundamentalists launch a renewed offensive involving hundreds of thousands of troops that drives the Chinese forces, now in dissarray through lack of strategic command, back hundreds of miles. Kabul is recaptured by nightfall, but by now Chinese reserve troops have had time to establish defensive positions, and the attackers are halted. As emergency services in the east struggle to deal with the catastrophe in Shanghai, a furious Chinese government launches an immediate invesitgation into how the nukes were delivered. It is obvious that the Shanghai device was delivered by insurgent, but how did that insurgent manage to penetrate so far eastwards? Similarly, several of the bases in western China hit by the nukes were well out of reach of the most long-range Pakistani delivery systems known to Chinese intelligence. A recconaissence raid into fundemantlist lines in Afghanistan recovers documents from the outskirts of Kabul that indicate the missiles were supplied freely by a foreign nation, but give little indication as to which. The nations with cause and capability to supply the fundementalists with missiles of this nature are India, Japan, Russia and North Korea. Russia and India are immediately and wisely dismissed by Chinese intelligence chiefs, for while the strike did indeed strike a terrible blow against the Chinese people, neither nation would gain security by supplying the fundemantalists with the capability to extend their nuclear range. Japan is subsequently dismissed as well, for such a rash and destructive move would be highly uncharacteristic of Japanese foreign policy. The only remaining nation that, in the eyes of the intelligence chiefs, could possibly have supplied the missiles to the fundementalists was North Korea. The Stalinist nation would have had ample cause to supply the missiles. With only a few thousand US troops remaining on the southern side of the DMZ and the nation's army too thinly stretched to send more resources, were the DPRK to ensure that China was neutralised by the fundamentalists, then the only major threads to a reconquest of South Korea would be Russia, a broken state, and Japan, one adverse to militarism. Ignoring calls for restraint from its neighbours, a furious China strikes out at the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. However, the North Korean army is massive, if not very well equipped, and the border is heavily fortified. The Chinese advance is halted on the first day as its advance army is torn to shreds by hidden artillery emplacements, tunnel networks and mines. In the skies, the Chinese Air Force wins out, but against extensive AAA protection designed to withstand the might of the USAF, there is little that even the vast Chinese air armada can do. Losses on both sides are serious, but the PLA suffers horrendous casualties. With the advance contained without North Korean generals having had to reinforce the Chinese border with any troops from the DMZ, the generals nonetheless indicate a long-time-planned mass conscription program. Reserve arms stockpiles are broken out as millions of civlians are conscripted into the Korean Peoples Army. The generals, percieving possible pro-Chinese intervention by South Korea and Japan, elect to launch a pre-emptive strike. On September 22nd, two days after the Chinese assault began, North Korea expends its entire nuclear arsenal of 20 fission warheads, aimed both at China and at South Korea and Japan. The Japanese Naval Self Defense force, having anticipated the possibility of North Korean attack and having positioned virtually its entire fleet in the Sea of Japan, manages with the help of Ground Self Defense Force missiles defenses and fighter aircraft to destroy all of the six missiles sent at Japan before they get within a hundred miles of the coast. Chinese defenses manage to destroy two of the four missiles (both of the two having been launched at Beijing), but one missile strikes the corps headquarters of one of the PLA's frontline formations in Korea, and a second hits Shenyang, a major city near the North Korean border. South Korea is hit worst of all. Seoul is completely obliterated despite three of the six missiles being shot down, and two more tear a massive hole in the DMZ defenses. Immediate international outcry follows, directed both at China, for invading the DPRK, and at the DPRK for its unprovoked attack on South Korea and Japan. The United States, having lost near to two thousand troops in the initial strike against the DMZ defenses, activates the NATO alliance, although it is obvious that NATO will be able to do very little to retaliate, while Russia declares war along with Australia and New Zealand, both nations electing to follow NATO policy. The DPRK launches a series of raids into Russian territory before Moscow has time to reinforce its eastern troops. The raiding parties achieve initial success but are eventually annihalated in the face of overwhelming Russian air superiority. Japan and South Korea sieze the initiative, and their combined air forces manage to destroy almost all of the remaining North Korean combat aircraft. The Japanese Naval Self Defense force presently moves most of its fleet to within missile range of the North Korean Sea of Japan coastal defenses, and the fleet commences bombardment while troops of the Ground Self Defence Force are landed on the South Korean coast to reinforce the republic's forces, currently fighting hard for every metre of soil yielded to North Korea in spite of the loss of much of the higher levels of their command structure. The US Marine Corps lands a small force along with the Japanese troops. A tide of PLA reinforcements manages to turn the tide in the northwest, and by the end of September North Korean troops are retreating on all fronts, although the fighting is fierce. The war in Asia drags on, with North Korea losing a few more miles of front every day to the encroaching allied forces. Finally, the time to decide the follow-up to the conquest of the nation is at hand, as allied forces link up to surround Pyongyang, defended by every man, woman and child remaining alive in the city who is able to hold a rifle and fire it at the nearest allied soldier. The fighting rages on without the city below the ground. Intelligence before the war made the allies aware of extensive tunnel networks built by the North Korean regime over the years of constant American surveillance, but the true extent of the underground facilities did not become known untill afterwards. North Korea is revealed to be a mesh of the tunnels, with a whole subterranean world existing below the surface, complete with its own factories and living quarters. Without supplies from the surface, it is only a matter of time before these underground salients collapse, but nonetheless China and Russia both choose to adopt a policy of cleaning the tunnels out with troops rather than sieging them out. The cost in terms of human life for both sides is enormous. Representatives from China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, a joint Austrlian-New Zealand delegation and a joint NATO delegation meet in Tokyo with three defected DPRK generals to discuss the nation's future.

The talks immediately hit a snag. China, angered by the humiliation of its armies and by the deaths of millions of its civilians, seeks retribution, demanding that North Korea be occupied indefinitely by the conquering forces, that its military and industrial capabilities be destroyed utterly. South Korea, seeking reunion with its northern brothers after over half a century of separation, councils international aid to help rebuild North Korea and a gradual integration with its own government, a policy that the Japanese and Australian-New Zealand delegations both support. Russia and NATO remain largely uncommitted to either policy, both nations being more concerned with the direct threat to their own borders emerging from the chaos in the Middle East and Central Asia. Notably, the United Nations is not consulted at any point during the negotiations. China objects to the inclusion of the North Korean generals from the outset, and leaves the talks in late October, resulting in their collapse, leaving only demands that China occupy the entirity of the country save for a strip of territory near the South Korean border, as well as the former DMZ. The talks formally conclude with South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand condeming the Chinese plan as unnacceptable. Russia gives its support to neither option. NATO offers tentative support for the Korean-Japanese plan.

The Middle East is by now unrecognisable. The Saudi government has more or less completely lost control of the country, with but a few enclaves of loyalist troops holding on to the more strongly-Westernised cities. US troops have by now withdrawn from the scene completely after a perilous eastern passage through the desert to Oman, the only nation remaining with any sense of order, being garrisoned as it is by a well-equipped national army, the entirity of the remnants of the so-called Coalition of the Willing in addition to a sizeable British force and, largest of all, the US troops evacuated by land from Saudi Arabia. Turkish forces are retreating, swept back by a wave of fundamentalists, the leaders being controlled by the influence of the Iranian government. Israel is beginning to fall apart. The major cities are all largely unrecognisable. The IDF had previously siezed control of the government, but by now has effectively lost control of the country once more. Its armies in Jordan, Syria and Palestine have withdrawn into single pockets, besieged on all sides by masses of fundamentalists and with nowhere to retreat to, the troops hemmed in on all sides by a populace enraged by wrongful invasion, occupation, desecration and oppression. Only in the Sinai do Israeli forces remain in any usable state, where they continue to exchange shots with Egyptian forces across the Nile. Egypt has by now successfully sued for peace with the USA, with America's leaders seeing no point in continuing a war originally fought in support of an ally that is now collapsing. Masses of refugees flood the port towns of Israel, attempting to buy passage out of the country through any means they can, as civlian militia conscripted and armed by the ailing IDF attempt to hold back the waves of fundamentalists with no coherency between units or resupply. Thousands of Israelis attempt to flee toward the respectable army of their nation left, the IDF forces in the Sinai, and vanish into the desert. Very few survive to reach the encampments along the Nile. Those that do are quickly dissapointed. The flames of fanatacism inspired by the injustice of the recent inernational relations has by now siezed Africa; in Morroco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya - trumpeted as a sign of Western progress toward reconcilliation with former enemies just a few years before - all play host to a series of strikes against NATO-nation embassies as their governments attempt to retain control of a populace increasingly inspired toward military revolt against the governments that have failed to bring them out of poverty and into the developed world for so many years. In east Africa, particularly Somalia, the funamentalism awakens old ethnic hatreds. The fundamentalism has a general destabilising effect on a nation that never really settled down; with the UN useless and the superpowers entwined in increasingly hostile politics relating to eachother, the deterrant to war between the various feuding African states is gone. The continent collapses into chaos. Fundamentalism sweeps through Turkey, a nation rapidly going to seed in the face of ever-advancing Iranian satellite forces, and into the Balkans, destroying a decade of relative peace as ethnic tensions are once more brought to the forefront of people's minds, as indeed are they in Africa. Fortunatly, NATO has made provisions for such an eventuality. Italian, French and German forces effectively move in and take control of potential problem zones, placing them under martial law.

People the world over are now panicking. What originally started as a relatively minor Israeli-Palestinian dispute has turned into an intercontinental disaster threatening the curremt world order itself. Already the wars have destroyed countless nations, killed countless millions of people, and all but eliminated the UN. However, the real shock is yet to come. Relations between China and the other allies are beginning to reach breaking point. Beijng continues to re-iterate its conditions, unchanged since the end of the talks, while the other nations continue to state that the Chinese plans are completely unnacceptable. Russia withdraws its forces from North Korea, now satisfied that the task is done, before rushing the troops to Central Asian bases in preparation for a potential northward spread in hostilities. On November 5th, however, international relations in Asia take a sudden and unpredicted turn for the worse, when the Chinese government discovers, after a tip off from an anonymous informer, that India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand are in close discussion, the first draft of a military defense pact near completion. Furious Chinese officials see the alliance as hostile, intended to strengthen Japanese-Korean demands regarding post-war government of North Korea. Even as the last bastions of the North Korean regime are being stormed by infantry in Pyongyang, China withdraws from the alliance of nations, and declares war on the so-called Asian Democratic Alliance.

How exactly the conflict evolved to the nuclear stage is unclear, but what is clear is that China generals believed a US nuclear counterstrike would follow a nuclear attack on Japan, South Korea, Australia or New Zealand, all of which were percieved to be beneath the USA's "nuclear umbrella", and so launched a full strike against America as well as against targets in the ADA. It is clear that the US government activated the NATO alliance as the ICBMs coursed through the upper atmosphere toward its western cities. It is clear that NATO provided a full nuclear response, as did India. The chaos in the Middle East and in central Asia continues on unimpeded, and Russia is soon drawn into conflict with Iran and its satellite fundamentalist organisations. With antimissile technology having progressed as far as it has by this time, the nuclear devastation is not as absolute as Cold War era predictions might have had it. With nuclear arsenals expended, or at the very least rendered the remainer inoperable, conventional war rages through the Himalayas, through the deserts of Afghanistan, through the jungles of Vietnam, Burma and Indonesia, through the streets of Pyongyang and Seoul, over the Sea of Japan and the skies of Tokyo and Beijing. It is known also that Oman eventually fell, with Coalition forces withdrawing in the face of total loss of infrastructure on the home front. It is known that, facing total defeat on all fronts, the by now maniacal Israeli generals unleashed the full power of Israel's sizeable nuclear arsenal on its Arab enemies, and indeed on its own people, destroying many cities on the verge of falling into enemy hands with their people still cowering inside their ruined homes. It is known that Iran was eventually obliterated by Russian nuclear fire. After these last few events, things vanish into obscurity. It is obvious, however, that even the nations that did not involve themselves directly in the war quickly fell victim to its indirect effects; the spread of radiation and biological warfare agents, when nuclear and biological weaponry are used on so large a scale, cannot be contained to the target country alone.

START READING HERE if you want to read only the relevant parts of the back story.

Official documentation reappears in the New Year of 2032, where the remnanets of the governments of the remaining nations meet in Trondheim, Norway, to discuss the future. At the conference, it is revealed that none of the nations involved have any further capability to attack their opposing forces, and following this a multi-lateral cease fire is signed between all of the major parties, effectively ending the war, although conflict between some smaller factions continues, particularly in Africa and in Central Asia, where the originally united fundamentalist groups have turned on eachother in the absense of Iranian control. All of the nations attending the conference, and a lot of those that were not, had virtually no infrastructure left. Strategic stockpiles of food and of vital resources like oil were running critically low, and in some countries had already been expended. In light of the fact that none of the nations would be able to rebuild themselves on their own accord, the nations attending the conference elect to combine together under a single banner - christened the Federal Commonwealth of Earth, governed by a senate comprising elected representatives from all of the major states. An interim council comprising the former heads of state agrees that the main objective of the Commonwealth should be to ensure that no war on the scale of the one just experienced can occur again. The interim council further agrees that this cannot be guranteed unless all of mankind is under its own banner. The Federal Commonwealth's states begin to rebuild themselves, co-operating fully on sharing resources. By 2040, the infrastructural crisis is over, and people throughout the states are enjoying the basic amenities of life in plentiful supply. Now, the fully-elected senate turns its attention to those nations not under the Commonwealth's control. The Commonwealth's control extends throughout the entirity of Europe, the southern and eastern coasts of Africa, the entirity of the former Russian Federation, all of Audtralasia, all of North America and all of Asia eastwards of and including China and India. The Middle East as well as central and south western continental Asia, the east coast and the centre of Africa and virtually all of South America - the only continent untouched by war - remain outside of Commonwealth control. Fortunatly, the potentially critical South American situation is largely diffused when the remaining pre-war governments (including Brazil, now in the position of dominant world superpower) agree to join the Commonwealth peacefully. Columbia, Venezuala and most of Central America have unfortunatly by now largely collapsed, with the governments falling victim to insurgents and former-drugs cartels, most of which have now formed their own miniature city states around major settlements. It was clear that in order for the future of peace to be guaranteed, these outside nations must be subjugated, however, the Commonwealth Armed Forces, a rag-tag collection of the remnants of the old nations' militaries, is clearly not up to scratch. The senate passes a bill demanding the modernisation of the armed forces, and out of the blue steps the Majestic Corporation. The Majestic Corporation, having been an international corportation with extensive assets in South America before the war, weathered its ill effects well, and it appeared to be one of the only companies left with defense contractor expertise. The senate, seeing no other alternative, agrees and makes the Majestic Corporation the sole supplier of a new generation of Commonwealth equipment. Development of all projects is finshed by the end of the year, with Majestic having been practically given a blank check for the task of designing the new equipment, and the new prototypes are demonstrated before the generals of the Commonwealth Armed Forces. Foremost among the prototypes are an entirely new kind of weaponry - gigantic exoskeletons over 2 stories high, heavily armoured and heavily armed, capable of being controlled with ease a single pilot. These new 'walking tanks' are named WAVs, or Walking Attack Vehicles, by the Majestic Corporation. Majestic reveals that it will be outfitting a unit of its security forces with the WAVs to test them on the battlefields that will soon be opened in South America, Africa and Asia by Commonwealth troops, and the various statesmen present, amazed at the capabilities of the new suits, agree wholeheartedly. In the spring of March 2042, the Commonwealth declares war on the various organisations and governments controlling territory outside of its influence and moves guns, tanks, aircraft and ships into the assault. In South America, the Majestic Corporation's XVII Security Corps, the security unit outfitted with the new WAV prototypes, achieves great success. By the war's end in late 2042, the Commonwealth's generals are convinced of the WAVs' potential., and the senate puts in a large procurement order. Other defense contractors have by now started to appear, but being the sole provider of equipment for the entirity of the so-called War of Unification, the Majestic Corporation is already in a commanding position, and already hold sconsiderable influence over the government.

By 2045 the economies of the Commonwealth's states have surpassed their pre-war levels. Resource-hungry industries are beginning to exhaust supplies, and so the Commonwealth begins a space program. With funding available to it beyond the level of anything that the pre-war nations had on their own, the space program achieves great leaps of technology in a very short time indeed. By 2048 Mars is colonised, and a few brave industrial corporations have begun to move factories to its surface, and to orbital facilities far above it. Still more resources were to be found in the asteroid field, but the government's attempts to find an offworld resourcing corporation willing to put forward the costs involved in developing the field are fruitless. Once again, the Commonwealth turns to the Majestic Corporation, offering a carte blanche for the developement of the asteroid belt, and is offered exclusive resourcing and shipping rights. Majestic agrees. After a year, ores begin to flow freely from the belt back toward Mars orbitals, and from there to Earth. A number of Majestic resource barges are lost in the belt. Originally suspecting navigational hazards, Majestic surveillance probes subsequently spot a number of unidentified vessels lurking in the belt. Once detected, they quickly flee. The Majestic Corporation concludes that its mining barges were the victims of piracy, and petitions the Commonwealth (now renamed the Sol Commonwealth to reflect on the unity of the system rather than just the nations of Earth) for permission for a radical expansion of its own private security forces, turning them into more of an army than a load of corporate guards, and is initially refused permission. However, around a week after the President's declaration that the Majestic Corporation would not be allowed permission to expand its forces, contact is lost with Mining Resource Station #210 A, located deep in the belt with a population of around a hundred Majestic staff. A subsequent expedition by lightly-armed Majestic patrol vessels discovers the floating wreckage of the station, along with that of three Majestic resource barges. There are no survivors; the total loss of life is estimated to be over two hundred. The senate and the Presidant review their earlier desicion, and subsequently agree to allow Majestic its security forces expansion. Within months, the Majestic Security Force comprises over two thousand WAVEs - Walking Attack Vehicle enhanced -, over a hundred armed patrol vessels ranging from long range fighter to frigate in size, and around two thousand Gunships - next generation aircraft capable of travel within atmosphere and without. Pirates continue to be a minor problem for the Majestic Corporation, but no events on the scale of the Station #210 disaster occur thereafter.

The year is now 2065, and the Commonwealth is poised on the brink of a new age of prosperity. With resources virtually unlimited and the economy stronger than ever, a happy populace goes about their lives enjoying the full comforts of life. This is nowhere more apparent than in New York, the capital of the Sol Commonwealth, a sprawling metropolis of gleaming skyscrapers, home to fifty million inhabitants. With this many people in so small an area, crime is inevitable. The New York Police Department must attempt to keep control of a city whose criminal underworld is equipped with a wide range of high-technology equipment. To combat this powerful enemy force, the NYPD also equips the latest technology, including WAVs, a few WAVEs and a large number of Gunships. With the citu growing more every day, the NYPD is on a permanent recruitment drive, and that is where you come in...

Journal of Officer Nick Andrews

Melissa seems to think I should start at a journal, I'm not sure why. It's not like anything interesting ever happens here. She said I should put my thoughts down here to "expand my mind" or something, I've got some coffee to drink here and a couple of minutes before I'm sent out on patrol, so I figured I'd record some thoughts. I just heard on the news that Majestic's making more demands - they say they want the guarantee that the Commonwealth isn't going to let any more independent corporations establish colonies beyond the Asteroid Belt - like Titan Engineering did. Julia Harley, their public relations rep, was on again. She said that Majestic already had the rights to colonies beyond the belt according to some old treaty and that the existing colonies were in violation of the treaty or some crap. I think that's a load of bullshit. If Majestic doesn't do its job and develope all that space and all those resources out beyond the Asteroid Belt, then I think that opens the board for proper contractors to do the job. I hate Majestic and all their shit - Melissa always tells me to keep that quiet, but I think she agrees with me. A lot of government officials and leading service figures - including a few guys at the top of the police service - support Majestic, and speaking out against the Corporation can be bad for your career. That's what Melissa says, anyway. Hopefully the Senate will take a stand on this demand and tell Majestic to go to hell, but they probably won't. Kellner just gives them whatever they want. A lot of people say it's okay because Majestic does good things like kill pirates, but I don't trust them.

Looks like almost the entire force is out on patrol today. The President's due to make a speech in Government Plaza about Majestic and the Senate's response to it, and the chiefs want to make sure it goes smoothly. Rumour has it they've recieved a tip off about some kind of terrorist attack. Still, the speech isn't untill 5 PM this evening, so it's anyone's guess why we're all being sent out this early...shit, I'm already a minute late for the roll call in the hangar, better get going.

[Entry Ends]

Tuesday 8th of June, 8:25 AM
NYPD Headquarters, WAVE Hangar

Police Captain Robert LeCarreau looked down at his watch, checking the time once again. 8:25 AM; Officer Andrews was four minutes late for the roll call, and if he didn't have the WAVE Riders out on the streets soon, he'd be in for a grilling by the Chief...

"Where the hell is that man?" Muttered the Frenchman, his pronounciation flawless, but his accent odd - or so he was told. It was likely due to him having been taught English in England but then having spoken it entirely in New York for the last couple of years. The other WAVE Riders stood nervously around him in a rough arch, the captain standing in the central cavity along with the unit's two sergeants, Sergeant Damien White and Sergeant Erika Tamen. Robert pulled the hem of his sleeve back over the watch before tapping his foot impatiently on the ground a few times. They were standing on the loading deck - a raised steel platform running around the perimeter of the massive hangar, with small jetties venturing inwards to allow the WAVE Riders easy access to their vehicle cockpits. The captain briefly remember something Weber had told him, about how WAVE Riders loaded up in the military. Big metal ladders, apparently - LeCarreau wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of having to dash up a ladder while under fire, but then the military probably knew these things better than he did. No doubt they procedures - God knows, the NYPD had enough of them. The captain was disturbed from descending into another mental damning of the NYPD's methods by the arrival of Officer Andrews, panting heavily, no doubt having run to the Hangar. He took up his usual spot in the mass of pilots, standing next to Officer Goodheart, his fiancée. Robert was wary of in-unit relationships; he feared personal issues might get in the way of the two officers, both of whom looked to have promising careers ahead of them, even if Nick did have to work on his punctuality.

"Nice of you to join us at last, Officer Andrews," he said. Ordinarily the captain would have dished out a longer reprimand, but he was at the time to anxious. Instead, he switched to the pre-deployment briefing. He hadn't given many; usually all that happened was that the Riders deployed with their partners and went on patrol. They were rarely needed, WAVE firepower usually being rather too much for the NYPD's day-to-day activities, and they almost never worked as one coherent unit. Planning the mission had been a nightmare. "Now that Officer Andrews has decided to grace us with his presence," he began, "we may dismebark. As many of you are already no doubt aware from rumour, we have recieved word from the Internal Security Division that there is the possibility of terrorist attack today, likely around the time of the President's speech. Our job is to keep the city, the senate and the President secure. We haven't done anything of this nature before, but I know you are all capable of performing well despite this. Your respective patrol paths have already been uploaded to your WAVEs' on board computers, any additional information that is required can be had either from myself or from Control. We've got a long shift ahead of us, but stay sharp. The slightest lapse in concentration could be crucial. That is all, move out!" with that, Captain LeCarreau took out his helmet from beneath the crook of his arm and jammed it onto his head, setting off at a lieasurely pace toward the open cockpit of his WAVE, fastening the helmet's straps beneath his chin as he did so. His two ground crewmen - military WAVE riders got five, but the NYPD ran on a tighter budget - stood by, ready to give the captain a hand climbing into his seat. As ever, Robert didn't need it. He nimbly placed his right hand on the edge of his cockpit and vaulted over it into his seat, immediately flicking two switches, one for power and one for the cockpit canopy, which descended over him gradually before cutting out the din of the WAVE Hangar altogether. LeCarreau cast a brief eye over the WAVE's now obsolete computer systems, though he doubted it would do him much good. If the ground crewmen had missed something important, the ancient computers on this thing weren't going to pick up. Robert briefly consoled himself by remembering that he had at least, as unit commander, been given a WAVE, albeit an outdated one, rather than one of the much older and much less capable WAVs. He lifted his right hand to his helmet radio and turned it on, speaking almost immediately.

"This is WAVE Captain Robert LeCarreau calling in, NYPD Control do you copy?" He asked, keeping his eyes on the two ground crewmen on the steel jetty in front of him. Both were checking palm computer systensm heads down, doing one last systems check. Ted Fenley, the mechanic on the right, looked up first, raising his right hand to signify that he hadn't spotted anything wrong with the WAVE.

"NYPD Control here, we read you loud and clear, Captain." LeCarreau recognised the voice, it was Naomi Fletcher, another new recruit. They'd had a lot, recently...the captain saw that the second mechanic, Ed Smith, was taking his time over the computer checks. Maybe he'd spotted something wrong? He was relieved to see the man raise his head and then his right arm. As he did so, the jetty that they were standing on began to retract back into the perimeter platform beyond. Robert offered a brief player up to whichever gods were watching before taking his WAVE forward and out into the sunglight...

LIST OF CHARACTERS (available for playing)

WAVE Riders
Officer Nick Andrews - (reserved by Inspectre) 22 and fresh out of the New York Police Academy, Nick Andrews is an intelligent and popular young WAVE Rider in the NYPD and, at the start of the thread, has just had his marriage proposal to young Melissa Goodheart, also a WAVE Rider of the NYPD, accepted.

Officer Kurt Weber - 36 (reserved by PK) so one of the more senior members of the NYPD's otherwise predominantly youthful ranks, Weber grew up through the End War. Not much is known about his past, though he's known to be ex-Commonwealth Defense Force. A few rumours would have him being ex-special forces, but he himself denies it, and there's little evidence to support it. For the meantime at least, Weber's past remains a mystery.

Officer Jason Stend -(reserved by Bakan) 22 and also fresh out of the Academy, Jason is a quiet and reserved, but nonetheless dilligent and highly capable officer of the NYPD. Despite his withdrawn nature, he has shown himself to be courageous and able to keep a cool head in difficult situations.

Officer Rodrigues Montez - at 24, Montez has a little more experience than most of the other NYPD WAVE Riders, having been in their ranks since the unit's formation two years ago. Montez grew up in still poverty-stricken post-war Columbia, and experienced the consequences of crime first-hand as a child when his father was killed in a drive-by shooting. This experience gives him a strong sense of duty, and makes him one of the most dedicated officers on the force.

Officer Amy Trenton - 22 and another Academy graduate, Amy is outspoken, but nonetheless very popular among the force - if not among her superiors.Amy comes from a mainly police career family, with her mother, father, elder brother and two uncles all being in the force themselves. Amy was renowned in the Academy as the best shot with a pistol, though she has now lost that status to Weber.

Armoured Patrolmen (powered armour)
Specialist Officer Paul Meyers - (reserved by Fluffie) 24 and originally a Majestic Outworld Security Officer, Meyers left the Corporation after barely surviving a botched boarding action undertaken by his unit against a pirate vessel, where he took a near-critical wound and nearly suffocated after the ship depressurised and left him with a fear of starships. Having returned to Earth seeking a quiet life, he could not find a job, and so in desparation joined the NYPD, where his credentials ensured him a place in the Armoured Patrolmen unit.

Specialist Officer Mark Griers - (reserved by Phang) 22, having served as a normal patrolmen in the force since 20, Griers was promoted to the Armoured Patrolmen unit last month after thwarting a bank robbery. Althought he managed to prevent the robbery with no harm to any of the hostages, in doing so he killed one of the robbers. Mark has been haunted by the man's death ever since, and has become steadily more withdrawn over the last two months.

Gunship Pilots
Air Patrolman Peter Vincetti - (reserved by Crazyboy) 23, having served the NYPD for a year as a gunship pilot. Whilst his flying skills are unsurpassed in the NYPD, his well-deserved reputation for recklessness has earned him the disadain of the force's commanders.

Make your own character!
If non of the above suit your tastes, or if you want to be a Gunship Pilot and the only Gunship Pilot character is taken or whatever, feel free to make your own character complete with a short history and optional physical appearance/etc.

Or, make me make your own character
If you're concerned that a self-made character won't get a significent role in the plot (and I promise to do my best to work in the interesting ones) then if you ask nicely and drop a few hints as to what you'd like, I'll make you your own guaranteed plot role character.

List of Known NPCs These are NPCs known to one or more of you. At the start of the thread, these are mainly politically active figures of importance to the plot and NYPD personnel of importance to the plot.

Police Chief Michelle Peters - at her relatively young age and being female, Peters' achievement in becoming Chief of the New York Police Department is no small feat, and it comes from a formidable and well-earned reputation for discipline and high results.

Police Captain Patrick Grant - a highly respected member of the NYPD for over ten years, Captain Grant commands the NYPD's Armoured Patrolmen, a situation response unit heavily armed to deal with potentially dangerous scenarios. Grant doesn't mix much with the other Patrolmen, but is nonetheless well-liked and respected by them.

Police Captain Robert LeCarreau - 28 and one of the fastest rising police officers in the entirity of the Commonwealth's law enforcement services, LeCarreau oringally enlisted in the Paris District Gendarmerie 10 years ago. Over time his quick wit, level head and natural leadership talent caused him to be promoted to WAVE Rider, then WAVE Sergeant, then he was transferred to the fledgling NYPD WAVE unit as commander, where he used his extensive experience to transform it into a disciplined and well-rounded force. LeCarreau is a good-natured and generally well-liked person who is highly respected by all in the force.

Officer Melissa Goodheart - 22, and has just become the fiance of fellow WAVE Rider Nick Andrews at the start of the thread. Goodheart is, like her fiance, popular throughout the force and billed for rapid advancement through the ranks of the NYPD, being both highly intelligent and highly dutiful. She has an easy-going attitude and will often not take things as seriously as she should.

President Jonas Kellner - 54 and President of the Sol Commonwealth for three years, facing re-election next year. Kellner is one of the most popular presidents in the Sol Commonwealth's (albeit short) history. Althought some defense chiefs and foreign advisors have expressed concern at his policy of appeasing Majestic rather than opposing them, the same policy has earned him great respect and admiration from the populace, who are naturally averted to war. Kellner looks set for comfortable election to a second term.

CEO Cedric Winthrop - 43, the CEO of the Majestic Corporation is renowned for his business acumen and oratory skills. One of the best-known figures in the system, Cedric takes an active role in politics, and as the chief executive of the Majestic Corporation and holder of 80% of the company's shares, he wields incredible influence over the Commonwealth's government, who rely on Majestic for developement of mining facilities in the Asteroid Belt, and for policing and shipping in the same area. The Majestic Corporation is also the main defense contractor and arms producer in the system.

Julia Harley - 24 and the Majestic Corporation's Head of Public Relations, Julia Harley is one of the corporation's rising stars, and is young for her position. In speeches and televised debates she puts a pretty face on ugly Majestic demands, always somehow managing to make them seem reasonable. As a result of her frequent appearances in the news media, she is almost as widely-recognised as Winthrop himself.

General Douglas McCairn - 50, Chief of Staff for the Commonwealth Defense Force and one of the most revered generals in history, McCairn commanded the CDF throughout the Wars of Unification. He is the Commonwealth's strongest critique of Kellner's appeasement policy, instead advocating a hard and uncompromising line against Majestic, who he believes are turning the Commonwealth's peaceful nature to their advantage.

General Yuan-Shen - 49, Second only to General McCairn in seniority, General Yuan-Shen is the CDF's most reliable field general - he fights the battles of foreign lands while McCairn looks to the bigger picture, to organisation and long-term strategy. Despite their dutiful co-operation on military matters, the two are fierce political opponents, with Yuan-Shen supporting the permanent contracting of Majestic to police the Outer Solar System, and staunchly airing his belief that appeasement of Majestic is the quickest, easiest and safest way to bring order to the Belt and beyond.

Admiral Armando Esposito - 57 year old Italian officer of the CDF Space Navy, and its most senior officer. Admiral Esposito commands the 1st "Battle" Fleet, the CDFSN's only major battle fleet. Although he rose through the ranks quickly and had a reputation for a keen tactical mind, the Space Navy is the CDF's most inexperienced branch, with practically no experience whatsoever of real combat, and the same is true of the admiral. He tends to stay clear of politics despite the considerable influence accompanying his rank. He is rumoured to be growing slow and senile in his old age, and those same rumours would also have it that he is pegged for retirement.

Peter Klaus - 67 year old genius scientist-inventor, responsible for the design of the latest and fastest series of fusion drives. Klaus is renowned both as a leading physicist and as an inventor. A recluse figure, he dissapeared out beyond the Asteroid Belt five years ago to join the then-fledgling Freehold Colony on Titan, and has not made a public appearance since, though he is known to be alive. Rumours from freelance traders encourage the belief that the brilliant scientist is working on one last, big project before retiring.

Claire Reynolde - 22, canteen worker at the NYPD Headquarters in New York. Both beautiful and likeable, Claire holds half of the NYPD's male ranks within a near-perpetual state of awe. Oddly, she is well-spoken, insightful and highly intelligent, which has lead to a lot of speculation as to why she bakes donuts in the NYPD Headquarters for a living.

Officer Roderick Waters - 34 and head controller at the NYPD Headquarters, he spends most of his time in the dark interior room that houses the NYPD's radio system and radio operators, who direct the officers about the city. Waters isn't a well-liked man, and is renowned in particular for his short temper. He is also widely known to be an alcoholic. Nonetheless, he gets his job done well, and most of the high-ranking officers seem to have faith in him.

Officer Naomi Fletcher - 22, graduated from academy along with Nick and Melissa and etcetera. Junior mission controller, she spends most of her time in the control room at the NYPD Headquarters, directing the other officers about their tasks. Out of work hours, however, she regularly mixes with the other others, and as such is very popular and well-known.

Re: The Sol War

Heh. Like I said, you don't need to read the first part yet. If I were you, in fact, I'd skip straight to the character lists and see if you want either of the remaining two pre-set ones before someone snatches them up...

Breathing heavily, Nick finally reached the entrance to the WAVE Hanger and ducked inside. Noticing that all of the WAVE Riders were currently standing around together on the loading deck, Nick groaned inwardly as he realized that he was late. Knowing there was little he could do about it, he steeled himself for a vitrolic greeting from the captain and jogged up to join the rest of the group.

As he approached, Nick noticed Melissa Goodheart standing near the back of the crowd. Seeing him approach, Melissa shot him a quick smile, and then turned back to watch the captain. Nick smiled back, although his slight smirk quickly disappeared as the captain welcomed him.

"Nice of you to join us at last, Officer Andrews." LeCarreau said, placing a heavy emphasis on at last. Nick prepared himself for one of LeCarreau's infamous tongue lashings, although at the moment it seemed time was of the essence, and Nick's "punishment" would have to wait. Still, as Nick moved up to stand beside Melissa, he was sure that he hadn't heard the end of this. "At least I can still run, you old fart." Nick grumbled under his breath. Apparently, he wasn't quiet enough, as a moment later Melissa playfully slapped him on the shoulder.

Before Nick got a chance to respond, LeCarreau began the briefing without further ado. When he was finished, the group of pilots scattered, each pilot heading to their own respective WAVs. As they walked along to their own WAVs, Nick continued to grumble to Melissa.

"The slightest lapse in concentration could be crucial." Nick said, mimicing LeCarreau's accent. "Hmph . . . yeah right. He better take his own advice, and not fall asleep in the cockpit."

"Nick!" Melissa admonished, giving him a hard shove into the nearly railing.

Nick caught himself, and turned back to face Melissa with a smirk. "I know I know, no respect for authority."

"You better at least respect my authority." Melissa replied, stopping to put her hands on her hips and scowl at him.

Noticing that they had already reached the jetty where their WAVs were stationed, Nick gave a mock bow and said, "Of course, milady. You have already captivated me with your beauty, and I would be loathe to offend you. In fact, I would prefer to remain with you here forever, but unfortunately, duty calls and I must be on my way."

Melissa struggled to maintain her scowl for a moment, then gave up and broke into a smile.

"You are so bad, Nick. What am I going to do with you?"

"What indeed." Nick replied, moving forward to wrap his arms around his fiance's waist for a quick hug, before breaking off the embrace and heading towards his WAV's cockpit.

Designed as a light strike fighter, the F-10 comes equipped with a belly-mounted light autocannon which is capable of shredding light vehicles and punching through thin walls. The F-10 is designed to evade fire rather than absorb it, and its armour is poor. As such pilots are advised to equip countermeasures to its hardpoints.

Re: The Sol War

Starter WAVs/WAVEs These vehicles are available to starting WAVE riders.

M20 Dragoon Light WAVE
[Contractor:] TriTech
[Class:] Fast/Recon
[Appearance:] All of TriTech's so-called "mechanized cavalry" WAVEs more-or-less share a common appearance; they are medium hieght and slender, save for the bulky souped-up thruster units attached to the back of the torso and to the back of the lower legs. The Dragoon is the lightest WAVE of the series and so stands shorter than the others, with less visible armour plating.
[Armament:] (included) none (hardpoints) one Class 2
[Equipment:] (included) basic sensors, basic coms (hardpoints) one Class 2, one Class 3
[Additional:] The Dragoon class was TriTech, at the time a minor resourcing company from Earth that had just won the rights to develope the fledgling Triton (the largest moon of Neptune) Colony. As such it's got a few technical faults - including bursting into flame if the fuel lines running through armour plating on the back of the torso are hit - whcih have earned it a bad reputation among the CDF and, later on, Commonwealth Police Force personnel that use it. The Dragoon continues to be used for its economical design, sheer speed and generous equipment hardpoint allocation - all of these combining to make it an ideal recon vehicle. Due to its unfortunate habit of exploding, the M20 is frequently referred to as the "Pig-Cooker".
[Armour:]

Armour (RL): 10
Armour (Torso Rear):10

M1 Kensai Cruiser WAV
[Contractor:] Majestic Corporation
[Class:] (Obsolete)
[Appearance:] Bulky and ugly, most Kensai types have by today seen better times; it's an old and now obsolete model that hasn't been in production for over a decade. Nonetheless, being affordable and easy to pilot it forms the maintstay of the NYPD's WAVE unit, and its relatively simple design allows ground crewmen to add on a wide range of modifications.
[Armament:] (included) one smoothbore 120mm cannon (hardpoints) one Class 1
[Equipment:] (included) none (hardpoints) five Class 1
[Additional:] The Kensai was the second WAV design ever made, and first saw combat in the Wars of Unification. At the time it was revolutionary - a vast improvement over Majestic's first WAV design - being the model that truly proved the WAV's capabilities to observers. Most existing Kensai are by now, however, on their last legs. Although they were very reliable when first made, ground crews are now having to work hard to keep them in shape. They often compensate for this by extensively modifying the WAVs, stapling on extra armour plating and sensors where necessary.

M1 Shogun Medium WAVE
[Contractor:] Majestic Corporation
[Class:] Medium/Cruiser
[Appearance:] Bulky but rounded in shape, Shoguns stand at medium height. Their rounded chasis structure makes the silhouette easily recognisable.
[Arnanent:] (included) one smoothbore 135mm cannon (hardpoints) one Class 2
[Equipment:] (included) basic scanners, basic coms (hardpoints) one Class 1
[Additiona:] The Shogun was the first ever WAVE, first constructed six years ago. Despite getting on in years, the Shogun is a well-rounded and reliable model that has earned the respect of its CDF and Majestic pilots. The first of the older Shoguns are beginning to trickle into Commonwealth police forces from the CDF, and one or two have found their way into the NYPD's reserve. Sometimes criticized for a lack of equipment hardpoints.

Starter Gunships These gunships are available to starting gunship pilots.

F-1 Hawk Gunship
[Contractor:] Majestic Corporation
[Class:] Light/Scout
[Appearance:] Small, rectangular-shaped gunship which would look quite sleek without the layers of grime that the still-used models have by now accumulated.
[Armament:] (included) none (hardpoints) two Class 1
[Equipment:] (included) advanced sensors, advanced coms (hardpoints) two Class 1
[Additional:] The first "true" gunship was manufactured by the Majestic Corporation in time for the end of the Wars of Unification, in which it served with distinction as a scout. Although long-since purged from the Commonwealth Defense Force and most other militaries, the F-1 is still used by the NYPD. It lacks firepower (which, in the NYPD, is seldom needed), but comes with advanced equipment included and the potential to fit more. Its engines are powerful and the gunship is highly manouevreable and very fast when it needs to be, both in space and in the atmosphere, and as a result it's popular with a lot of the pilots that use it despite its age. Most of the still-existing models are reaching the end of their service lives, and as a result most of the Hawks used by the NYPD Air Patrol Wing are beginning to suffer from reliability issues.
[Armour:]

Armour (Left Wing): 10
Armour (Right Wing): 10

F-10 Lynx Gunship
[Contractor:] Majestic Corporation
[Class:] Light/Strike
[Appearance:] Sleek and wedge shaped, the Lynx is renowned for its looks. The gunship is all smooth curves save for its weapons and the massive thrusters at its rear.
[Armament:] (included) belly-mounted 20mm autocannon (hardpoints) one class 2
[Equipment:] (included) advanced sensors, basic coms (hardpoints) one class 1
[Additional:] By NYPD standards, the Lynx is a fairly modern piece of kit.

Armour (Right Engines): 10
Armour (Rear):14

Starter Powered Armour Suits These suits are available to starting armoured patrolmen.

MA-06 Ranger Fast Armour
[Contractor:] Herschler Arms Manufacture
[Class:] Light/Mobile
[Appearance:] Very slim for powered armour, leaves the human form virtually unchanged.NYPD-issue Ranger suits have the armour plating painted blue with yellow "ARMOUR" lettering across the chest and back. The rubber under-suit makes the suit enclosed and shows through where the plates meet. Agas mask replete with breathing apparatus is clearly visible.
[Armament:] (holsters) one class 1, one class 2
[Equipment:] (included) basic sensors, advanced coms (helmet) one class 2
[Additional:] Probably the first fully-enclosed suit of powered armour, the Ranger is less bulky than more modern equivelants, and thus is still in use even by the Commonwealth Defense Force for scouting and reconnaisence purposes. A soldier wearing the MA-06 can carry adequate firepower for dealing with enemy infantry, and with its class two equipment slot the suit has the potential to be well-equipped. The soldier wearing the suit is capable of much faster and more agile movement than soldiers in most other suits, and so the Ranger's only major disadvantage is its lack of protection; the plates themselves are fairly weak and any bullet hitting the seams between the plates will be offered very little resistance. One of two suits of armour used by the NYPD's Situation Response Unit.

Armour(Head): 8
Armour (Torso Front): 10
Armour (LA): 5
Armour (RA): 5
Armour (LL): 5
Armour (RL): 5
Armour (Torso Rear):10

MA-12 Bahr Heavy Armour
[Contractor:] Herschler Arms Manufacture
[Class:] Heavy/Assault
[Appearance:] Very bulky, but with rounded segments, the wearer of the Bahr is completely covered by its protective metal casing. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about the armour is the sizeable weaponry it can holster. The end of the suit's gas mask filter is visible as a flat circular disc set into the front of the head.
[Armament:] (holsters) one class 2, one class 4
[Equipment:] (included) basic sensors, basic coms (helmet) none
[Additional:] A fairly new piece of kit, the Bahr is loved by those who wear it, despite its various shortcomings. The MA-12 is a heavy assault suit, designed to take in firepower and dish it out. It is heavily armed with one class 2 and one class 4 weapon, enabling it to be used in the military for tank-hunter and anti-infantry purposes. The soldier wearing the Bahr is comforted by the fact that he is surrounded by thick armour plating on all sides. Unfortunatly, said soldier is liable to blinding, and is heavily weighed down. The MA-12 is slow and unwieldy, and with only basic coms and sensors and no equipment hardpoints, must be supported by light infantry to protect it.

---

Note: As police officers, you haven't got access to some equipment now that you will have access to in the military. Note also that you will have the oppurtunity to re-equip your vehicle/suit following your first engagement if you don't like what you chose.

Armoury - WAVs/WAVEs

Class 1 Weaponry/Equipment
Pistol - fires large metal "bullets", reasonable accurate at short and medium range, capable of penetrating light armour. Semi automatic, 16 round clip. Mainly useful against other WAVEs.

Heavy Pistol - fires larger bullets at a higher velocity, but with lessened accuracy at medium range. Bullets deal better damage, clip size reduced to eight rounds, semi automatic, useful against other WAVEs.

20mm Chaingun - fires 20mm chaingun rounds at a rate of two per second, useful against infantry and lightly armoured vehicles/WAVEs.

30mm Chaingun - fires 30mm chaingun rounds at a rate of one per second. It packs more firepower than the 20mm chaingun, but with the trade-off of a slower rate of fire. It is useful against light WAVEs and light/medium vehicles, though it does not perform as well as the 20mm when applied to infantry.

Light Machine Gun - fires large metal "bullets", accurate at short range and at medium range when on semi automatic. Also capable of full automatic fire. 20 round clip. The clip is discharged quickly on full automatic. Useful against infantry and light WAVEs.

Infantry Support Grenade Launcher - capable of firing high explosive, smoke, flashbang and teargas grenades at range of up to around 80 metres, this weapon is designed to support officers on the ground in crowd control, though the high explosive grenades are also useful against light and medium vehicles and light WAVEs.

Light Sword - a simple, light sword or other hand-to-hand weapon, useful against light WAVEs at close quarters. It lacks the weight needed to punch through heavy armour.

Additional Armour Plating - in effect, additional armour plates rivetted onto the hull of your WAVE by your ground crew. Provides 10 additional armour on the part that it is fitted to (you must specify).

Advanced Coms - soups up your communications array, reduces the effect of enemy coms blocker equipment.

Advanced Sensors - gives you a better chance of spotting hidden units/etcetera, allows you to obtain a schematic of enemy WAVEs/vehicles along with damage, improves tracking abilities.

Improved Engines - modifications administered to the engines by your faithful ground crewmen make them more reliable and slightly boost the speed of your WAVE.

Class 2 Weaponry/Equipment
Heavy Machine Gun - fires at a higher rate than the Light Machine Gun, with clip size boosted to eighty rounds. The entire clip is expended in roughly four seconds of sustained fire. When fired in bursts, the HMG is accurate at medium range. It is very useful against infantry.

Rifle - fires a large slug, accurate at long range. The Rifle is highly damaging when it hits, but requires a fairly skilled shooter to use properly, due to its low rate of fire. Semi automatic with a ten round clip. The Rifle is mainly used against enemy WAVEs, and performs well against light and medium models.

Shotgun - fires a spray of large shotgun pellets. It can be very capable in good hands when used at short range against enemy WAVEs; it can usually penetrate light armour, and if not can sometimes knock the target down. It can also be used to surpress infantry, though due to the spread, the chance of a hit is slim.

Heavy Sword - a heavier sword or other hand-to-hand weapon, with enough weight to punch through medium armour as well. Can be useful in close quarters fighting.

Basic Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) - disrupts enemy sensor waves, making your WAVE more difficult to lock on to. Especially effective against missiles, which rely on targetting systems to home in.

Coms Jammer - disrupts enemy communication arrays, depending on the quality of the array, this will either interfere with or outright block their transmissions.

Improved Onboard Computer - improves your WAVE's onboard computer, enabling you to better access data on the status of your systens, etcetera, and to better process sensor signals.

Class 3 Equipment
Advanced Electronic Countermeasures - as before except better, also includes decoy flares, which are launch upwards from small tubes on the back to draw off missile fire.

Improved Thrusters - thrusters are improved, allowing your WAVE to dodge and manouevre more effectively. Also allows the WAVE to "jump" obstructions of one storie or shorter height.

Armoury - Gunships Note: I'm aware the Gunship lists are a bit scant atm. You'll have a lot more stuff available to you later. It's just difficult to justify a police force having high explosive bombs and such...

Class 1 Weaponry/Equipment
Minigun - can be loaded with rubber bullets for crowd control or metal bullets for full-on fighting. Fires ten rounds a second. Should be fired in bursts, as on full automatic ammunition will be expended quickly.

Light AA Missiles - light air-to-air missiles designed for use against enemy aircraft. Guided, your gunship can carry twenty on each trip (ten on each wing). Thought it can be used against ground targets, any damage would be fairly light, as the missile is designed for use against weakly-armoured aircraft.

Chaff Pods - deploy chaff to disrupt chasing missiles. Can deploy ten times per load-out.

Additional Armour Plating - in effect, additional armour plates rivetted onto the hull of your Gunship by your ground crew.

Improved Engines - modifications administered to the engines by your faithful ground crewmen make them more reliable and slightly boost the speed of your Gunship.

Class 2 Weaponry/Equipment
Rotary Chaingun - fires three chaingun rounds a second from three different barrels, useful against infantry and light vehicles, as well as other aircraft.

Autocannon - fires one small, high explosive shell per second. Useful against light WAVEs, light and medium vehicles, some application against infantry.

Improved Ejector Seat - improves your Gunship's ejector seat, increasing the chance of you surviving a crash. Allows early warning of a fatal hit, allowing you to bail out earlier.

Basic Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) - disrupts enemy sensor waves, making your Gunship more difficult to lock on to. Especially effective against missiles, which rely on targetting systems to home in.

Coms Jammer - disrupts enemy communication arrays, depending on the quality of the array, this will either interfere with or outright block their transmissions.

Improved Onboard Computer - improves your Gunship's onboard computer, enabling you to better access data on the status of your systens, etcetera, and to better process sensor signals.

Armoury - Powered Armour

Class 1 Weapons
Pistol - fires large metal "bullets", reasonable accurate at short and medium range, capable of penetrating light armour. Semi automatic, 16 round clip.

Heavy Pistol - fires larger bullets at a higher velocity, but with lessened accuracy at medium range. Bullets deal better damage, clip size reduced to eight rounds, semi automatic.

Slug Pistol - fires one large metal bolt at high velocity, designed purposefully to penetrate heavy powered armour suits at close range. Once fired, a new bolt must be manually inserted into the firing chamber.

Sub Machine Gun - a compact machine gun designed for use in close quarters, fires high velocity bullets on semi automatic, three round burst or full automatic firing modes. Innacurate at medium and long range due to its short barrel, it nonetheless deals high damage at close range. Weapon of choice for the Situation Response Team when storming buildings.

High explosive grenades - four grenades, five second fuse.

Flashbang grenades - four grenades, five second fuse.

Smoke grenades - four grenades, five second fuse.

Tear gas grenades - four grenades, five second fuse.

Class 2 Weapons/Equipment
Assault Shotgun - designed for use at close quarters, can fire single cartridges or all eight loaded cartridges in one go on full automatic. While it lack the power to penetrate medium and heavy armour at close range, the impact strength is usually high enough to either knock down or disorientate the target.

Assault Rifle - capable of firing in semi automatic and full automatic, the assault rifle has a thirty round clip and is highly accurate at short and medium range, and reasonably accurate at long range, when fired in semi automatic. At long range it lacks the strength to penetrate anything other than the lightest of armour, and even at close range it can have trouble getting through heavy and even medium armour.

Heavy Machine Gun - fires at a higher rate than the Light Machine Gun, with clip size boosted to eighty rounds. The entire clip is expended in roughly four seconds of sustained fire. When fired in bursts, the HMG is accurate at medium range. It is very useful against other infantry.

Light Anti Tank Weapon - fires an armour piercing rocket accurate at range of up to a kilometre (requires direct line of sight). The projectile is unguided, but capable of penetrating the armour of light and medium WAVEs and vehicles if it scores a hit. The weapon is one shot only and is disposed after use, but you can carry two at once (since I'm a kind and generous guy).

Sniper Rifle - ten round, semi automatic rifle equipped with scope. Made primarily with long distance sniping in mind, it is nonetheless suitable for short and medium ranged combat, so long as the soldier using it can shoot straight and so long as he bears in mind its reduced rate of fire and clip size. The weapon is capable of pinpoint accuracy at long range, and also comes with a tripod allowing it to be rested on walls and such.

Tactical Command Link - a complex but compact computer/sensor package that allows you to link to the nearest tactical headquarters and request airstrikes/reinforcements/what have you, as well as make information calls to military/police intelligence.

Coms Jammer - disrupts enemy communication arrays, depending on the quality of the array, this will either interfere with or outright block their transmissions.

Jumpjets - these nifty little gadgets can only be fitted on the Ranger suit, and allow the wearer to leap up to two stories. Very useful for urban warfare, but also for ship-to-ship boarding actions. There's enough fuel in the tanks for roughly siz such jumps. Slowing one's descent takes less fuel, as does jump-jetting smaller obstructions.

Class 4 Weapons
Minigun - with a very high rate of fire, most of the space needed to justify the Minigun's class 4 weapon size is taken up by spare ammunition. This weapon will shred other powered infantrymen to pieces, though prolonged sustained fire will deplete the ammunition stocks quickly. Can also be used against low-flying Gunships.

Fly-by-Wire Missile Launcher - fires one, high explosive or armour piercing missile, which can be guided to its target by the gunner by aid of a nose-mounted camera. Capable of taking out even heavy WAVEs if it hits the right spot (like a fuel line or a leg joint), this Missile Launcher is a deadly weapon in the right hands. Unfortunatly, since the gunner must devote his full attention to guiding the missile, he is oblivious to his surroundings while doing so, and makes an easy target.

Shoulder-launched AA Missile - fires one guided anti-air missile that is capable of destroying most fighter-size Gunships in one shot, and heavily damaging most bomber and transport Gunships. While its range is good, the missiles' sizes means that only eight reloads can be carried at any one time.

corrected.

WAVE would be a M20 Dragoon I think, with a rifle, certainly, and dunno what I can get else, so I'll list what I find interesting... advanced sensors, ECM, coms jammers, and additional armour plating on the back

Too late to join?

If not, since I can't make a final decision on what to "drive". Just tell me which you'd prefer and I'll tailor a character. Or randomly watch any movies I have related to columbia.

*scrolls back up and starts reading, from the beginning this time*

[edit]Ok. In light of Ryon Jkars taking Rodrigues I guess I don't have to raid my video collection. Will post a character in a short while.[/edit]

Callsign: Revenant

Officer Rodrigues Montez - at 24, Montez has a little more experience than most of the other NYPD WAVE Riders, having been in their ranks since the unit's formation two years ago. Montez grew up in still poverty-stricken post-war Columbia, and experienced the consequences of crime first-hand as a child when his father was killed in a drive-by shooting. This experience gives him a strong sense of duty, and makes him one of the most dedicated officers on the force.

M20 Dragoon Light WAVE

Re: The Sol War

All
I'm seeing a lot of M20 claims here. Did I make it too good or something?

Zappa
Right, I'll edit in your DMing shortly.

Spritely
It's most certainly not too late to join. Although Ryon does indeed appear to have reserved Mr Montez, I'd be happy to make a custom character for you if you drop a few hints.

Ryon
Approved, though I see you've yet to choose equipment. I'm not sure Revenant seems quite right though...have you considered something in Spanish? Fantasma or something, since they both mean "ghost" in different languages. Obviously it's up to you at the end of the day...

I suspect it's something to do with people underestimating the destructive force of a 120+mm cannon. Possibly cos you've not described it.
I personally am probably going for an M1 Shogun.

Re: The Sol War

All
Adapting from SZ's hypothesis regarding lack of cannon description...

120mm Cannon (Smoothbore) - the 120mm cannon fires a 120mm size high explosive or armour piercing tank shell at high velocity. Accurate at range of up to one kilometre (while standing still), WAVEs aren't exactly a stable firing platform while moving, so its accuracy suffers when fired from a non-standing position. Capable of destroying light vehicles and WAVEs outright if it scores a hit, and capable of destroying medium vehicles and WAVEs as well, depending on the model's armour strength, though generally it will take two hits.

Spritely
I like the idea. Prospective character profile PMed shortly.

Re: The Sol War

NYPD Headquarters - WAVE Hangar

Zappa
(tell you what, since for the moment I'm bored of describing people heading for their WAVEs, you can start out on patrol already )

You continue to guide your WAVE along the waterfront, some distance south of the city, watching the waters carefully. You'd been running the night shift tonight, unfortunatly, and you'd be on duty all day along with the rest of the force as well, to strengthen security at the President's high-profile speech scheduled for the evening. You had been scheduled for an hour's rest starting at 8 AM, but, doubly unfortunatly, that wasn't going to happen, since at around midnight the NYPD had recieved an anonymous tip-off that one organisation or another would be brining in a full load of contraband - noone knew what, but it was probably going to be cocaine manufactured by the rebels in Columbia - hidden inside a heavy tanker. Large naval cargo ships were pretty rare these days, so all WAVE Riders on the night shift (there were normally more, but it was running skeletal so as to have as many officers as possible rested for day duty) were out on the cost south of the city, watching the Atlantic Ocean for this heavy tanker. Sergeant Howard, as the senior WAVE Rider on the beat, is in control, and around an hour back he ordered the team to split into pairs. You were paired with Officer Janette Craser, who, you can see on your sensors, is following close behind you in her Kensei WAV. It's been getting increasingly foggy for the past half hour, and now you're having trouble seeing at distance. Thus far, you and Craser haven't spoken so much as a word to eachother, but most Kensei types still in service are pretty heavily upgraded, so there's the chance she'll have better sensors than you do, giving you a better chance of spotting the tanker if you share data...

Inspectre
As you begin to walk down the jetty toward your Dragoon's ((assuming you eventually settle on the Dragoon)) cockpit, you suddenly hear your name called from behind you.

"Nick! Nick! Wait a second!" The voice is Melissa's. You turn around to see her running toward you, her helmet already on and fastened. You make eye contact and she comes to a top a few paces in front of you, smiling. "I meant to give you this earlier," she says, producing something from her pocket, which glints gold, "but you didn't get here on time, as usual." she holds the object up higher, and you see what looks like a fine gold chain, with a simple, oval-shaped gold pendant attached to it. She reaches out, leaning forwards, and lowers it over your neck, beaming widely. "I had it made especially - the day after you proposed. I want you to keep it with you all the time, so that even when we're apart I'll be close to you." Although still smiling, you can tell by her voice that she's deadly serious about keeping it with you. She sometimes did corny things like this, but it's one of the things you like about her. "Open it up," she says, oblivious to what's going on around them. You do so, and see one picture set into each side of the oval. One shows you and her, standing side by side in Central Park, the other shows her face, smiling up at you, looking every bit as beautiful as she did now. Returning your gaze to the real Melissa, you watch as she places a hand on your shoulder. "See you on the outside, Nick," she says, before turning and jogging down the walkway toward her own WAVE. The others have almost all left the hangar by now...

PK
Along with the others, you head out to your WAVE - one of the looming M1 Shogun classes. There aren't many of them in the Hangar - most of the others being the now-obsolete Kensei classes - and securing one for yourself hadn't exactly been easy. Fortunatly, due to your excellent training record, LeCarreau had indeed granted you one. You reach the jetty that allows access to your own WAVE, and turn right, walking out along it. Matt Hopner, one of your two ground crewmen is standing ready to greet you. His partner, Yvonne Takowski, is some way behind him, apparently checking the computer systems in the cockpit, seated as she is in the pilot's seat. As ever, Hopner's face is split by a big grin.

"Morning Kurt," he says, opting against formalities, as did most personnel when not in the presence of captains or sergeants, "the Shogun's looks to be running smooth, Yvonne's just doing some final checks on the comp systems now, we spotted a few glitches when we tested them out yesterday, but I think we managed to fix most of them..." for some reason, a sense of foreboding comes over you at this point, precisely as you walk past the mechanic. He falls in behind you, following you toward the WAVE, and after a moment or two continues talking. "Like I said, looks like it'll run fine. Engines in particular are running great since we got that upgrade for 'em," Matt was an expert scrounger, and had somehow managed to secure a set of military-quality upgrades for your WAVE's engines. He'd spent the best part of two weeks installing them, and you've yet to pilot the end result...as you finally reach the cockpit, your hear Yvonne's palm computer emit a series of beeps and tones. She nods, apparently satisfied with whatever it was she'd checked, and placing one hand on either side of the cockpit, pushes herself upwards before swinging her legs outwards and landing smartly on the deck.

"Everything looks to be in order, Kurt," she says, knocking on the steel armour plating of the WAVE with her right hand as though to demonstrate, "the onboard comp is still acting a bit funny, but it seems to be working fine." Without a word to eachother, they both produce their palm computers again, and begin performing the final pre-embarkation checks on the vehicle...

Meanwhile, above the streets of Manhattan...

Crazy
You tear down the main street of New York's rebuilt Manhattan Island district, with towering skyscrapers hundreds of stories high rearing up on either side of you. You're going at a little over regulation speed; enough to stop you from getting bored, but not so much as to bring disciplinarian action in from the guys above. Your new Gunship - the F-10 Lynx, arrived just yesterday - is handling like beaut, just like your ground crewmen said it would. Good-looking, sleek, manouevreable - and you haven't even tested the afterburners out yet. Heavily armed, too. You dive downwards briefly, dipping down below a freight shuttle making its own ponderous way down the street, likely headed for the spaceport. As you bring your Gunship up again, you hear your radio stutter and his with static, then, a woman's voice.

"Come in Crazyboy, come in Crazyboy, do you copy, over."

Re: The Sol War

Peter ran his hand over the sleek, polished finish of the controls in the cockpit of his F-10. What he had seen so far of it, he loved. And his new craft had even come with military grade engines. He definitly had to find a nice quite time to test them to the full. Somewhere with very few buildings. Maybe he could find an excuse to cruise over the sea.

Peter was then rudly knocked out of his planning a speed test when his radio cracked.

"Ah well. Maybe I'll get to test this beaut properly now."

He flicked a switched with his left thumb, turning on the radio.

"Aye. This is the Crazyboy, reading you loud and clear. How can I help you this fine day?"

You reply to the operator, trying to figure out who she is. You recall Naomi Fletcher's name being on the roster for today's operation. No doubt that bastard Police Sergeant Walters was going to be there as well, making sure everything ticked over smoothly; virtually the entire force was out in the city today...

"We've got ground officers in pursuit of a vehicle headed inwards across the Brooklyn Bridge, it's a truck and it's moving pretty fast. The driver refused to stop for checking at a roadblock and we think it might be rigged to blow, could be headed for the Commonwealth Senate building on Manhattan. Could you get to it and give it a sweep with your scanners?" Comes Naomi's reply after a few moments of silence. Fortunatly, you're quite close to the bridge. A quick upwards climb to clear the tops of the skyscrapers, a turn to the left, and it should be in plain site...

"Morning Yvonne, Matt. I hope that 'a bit funny' won't be to big of a problem? I'll take it easy on the new engine for a while, make sure its going smoothly. Can you monitor from here, tell me if anything looks bad at this end?"

*Kurt walked swiftly along the entry jetty, jamming his helmet on as he did so, then vaulting into the cockpit of his WAVE in an imitation of the manoeuvre performed by LeCarreau. He keyed for engine start, listening to a few last words of advice from the mechanics before closing the canopy and belting in. Some of the new recruits forgot to do that, perhaps reasoning that the WAVE's armour would protect them. Kurt had seen that get proved wrong before, like that time when someone tried to bail out and... well it hadn't been pretty. He did a last once over of the instruments, hoping that they were all reading correctly, then requested clearance to leave.*

Re: The Sol War

Nick continued walking towards his Kensai, an outdated but still highly effective WAV. Although he despised Majestic, Nick did have to concede that they always came up with the best WAVE designs.

"Here's to hoping someone starts getting good at designing WAVEs too, and puts them out of business for good.", Nick thought darkly as he reached the entry point along the jetty for his Kensai. As if she had sensed his suddenly moody thoughts, Melissa once again appeared.

"Nick! Nick! Wait a second!" She shouts, running down the jetty towards him. Although her helmet was already on, she had the visor flipped up, allowing Nick to still see her smiling face. Coming to a stop in front of him, Melissa takes a moment to catch her breath, and then her smile widens as she reaches into the right pocket of her uniform jacket.

"I meant to give you this earlier," she says as she pulls something out of the pocket. "But you didn't get here on time, as usual." Melissa then held the object up, and Nick could see it was a small gold pendant, strung on a thin gold chain. With a soft giggle, Melissa reaches out, and lowers it over Nick's head.

Apparently feeling the need to explain due to Nick's mystified expression, Melissa said with a wide grin, "I had it made especially - the day after you proposed. I want you to keep it with you all the time, so that even when we're apart I'll be close to you." Although cheery, Melissa's voice carried a warning tone in it, and Nick knew that she was dead serious about this. Just like keeping a journal . . . for whatever reason, Melissa sometimes insisted on doing corny things, but Nick always went along with them.

"Open it up," Melissa said, oblivious to the fact that one of Nick's techs was glaring directly at her, and tapping his foot impatiently.

Knowing he had to continue to humor her, Nick flicked the small locket open, revealing two pictures inset inside. One side showed a simple close-up photo of Melissa's face, beaming into the camera. The other was a copy of one of the photos Nick and Melissa took while picnicing in Central Park.

Looking back up at Melissa, Nick forced a smile and mumbled "Thanks."

Melissa replied by placing a hand on his shoulder, saying "See you on the outside, Nick," before turning and running back down the jetty. Turning to face his two ground technicians, Nick grins and barks, "Alright, let's go!"

Swinging himself over the railing, Nick plops himself down into the cockpit seat of his Kensai. Although the motion was dangerous, due to the fact that it was against regulations, and the fact that Nick might slip and fall two stories to the hard concrete floor below, Nick seldom cared. Now and then, Nick liked to live dangerously, and it was a far quicker way into his cockpit seat than by following regs and slowly lowering himself into the cockpit, one foot at a time.

Reaching around behind him, Nick plucks his helmet off of the floor where he usually kept it (another thing typically against police regs), and shoved it down over his head. Flipping his helmet's visor up, Nick looks up and to the side at his ground technicians. "I trust everything is in order, guys?"

One of the technicians, an older gentleman that had been Nick's ground technicians since he joined the police force, simply laughed and shook his head. "Where are you kids going to learn the regs are there for a reason? Ah, fortunately your WAV is as frisky as you are." The other ground technician then spoke up, adding "Yes, your Kensai is prepped and ready to go. All systems check green, although as usual you will want to keep a close eye on your right rear sensor: occasionally it still winks out now and again."

"Alright, thanks guys. Take care, I'm outta here!!" Nick replied, before flipped his visor down, securing the chin straps, buckling his seat's safety harness, and then triggered the cockpit window button. The cockpit window then swung down over the cockpit, sealing Nick inside the two-story tall weapon. Nick then quickly ran through the necessary start-up procedures, and slowly moved his WAV out away from the jetty, and then towards the open Hanger door.

[Armament:] (included) one smoothbore 120mm cannon (hardpoints) one Light Machine Gun
[Equipment:] (included) none (hardpoints) five Class 1
Improved Engines
Advanced Sensors
3x Additional Armour Plating
[Additional:] The Kensai was the second WAV design ever made, and first saw combat in the Wars of Unification. At the time it was revolutionary - a vast improvement over Majestic's first WAV design - being the model that truly proved the WAV's capabilities to observers. Most existing Kensai are by now, however, on their last legs. Although they were very reliable when first made, ground crews are now having to work hard to keep them in shape. They often compensate for this by extensively modifying the WAVs, stapling on extra armour plating and sensors where necessary.

Re: The Sol War

NYPD Headquarters - WAVE Hangar

PK
"The comp should hold up, Kurt," replies Yvonne, trying to allay your fears of it failing at some crucial point. Various experiences in the special forces left you of the firm opinion that a soldier should be able to trust his equipment to work...but then you're not a soldier any more. You drop down into the padded seat of the WAVE's cockpit. Both mechanics elect to finish their checks before sealing you in. Yvonne, having had a slight head start, finishes first, with Matt following up a moment later. "Checks cleared." she announces.

"Confirmed, all checks cleared." With that, you flick the switch to lower your cockpit canopy. It closes with a gentle thud, and presently you hear Matt's voice in your ear. You notice for the first time that he's wearing a small radio headset, complete with microphone, beneath his cap. "Yeah, we should be able to monitor your systems from here without too much trouble," you hear him say, and at the same time you see Yvonne checking the sealant betweem cockpit canopy and hull. She slaps the canopy twice with the flat of her hand, signifying it's sealed up fine, before standing back on the jetty, which begins to retract back into the wall. Both technicians turn their heads to watch you manouevre out. "If we see any problems, we'll let you know, though if you go too far out from HQ we'll lose this radio link; the array isn't strong enough," Matt continues, "good luck out there, Kurt." he finishes, and you see him throw a mock salute from the jetty, out of the corner of your eye. With the jetty now fully retracted, you follow LeCarreau out into the street. The bright sunlight streming down into the yard, bouncling off the gleaming, reflextive walls of the towering police headquarters buildings, is a stark contrast to the dimly-lit hangar. You see LeCarreau's WAVE - dark blue, like all the NYPD vehicles - standing ready a few steps from the entrance. Momentarily, the captian's voice sounds on the radio.

"Officer Weber, you're patrolling Government Plaza, no less. Your orders are to give an audio warning to any vehicle or person you spot acting suspiciously. If they ignore the warning, detain them untill foot officers arrive to arrest them. If they refuse detention you're authorised to use lethal force...something's got the Chief all riled up, she seems to think there's a real threat today..." He says, his voice loud and clear. Government Plaza is the gigantic, beautifully-designed square between the Commonwealth Senate building and the President's Residence -the President would give his speech there today.

Inspectre
You're still thinking of Melissa and the locket as you shut the canopy on your Kensai - an old bird, but an attractive one regardless - and as you watch yout two techies check the sealant. The old WAV's cockpit sealing was erratic at best, and you'd heard stories of pilots getting a nasty fose of tear gas in crowd control situations because their canopy hadn't shut properly, so these checks were something more than a mere outdated archaic procedure with the Kensai. Both mechanics seem satisfied, and they stand back on the jetty. It begins to retract into the wall. Meanwhile, perform the start-up procedures. One last systems check, then you begin to take her out, signing in to Control as you do so.

"Thanks for the call Nick," Replies the voice of Naomi Fletcher, apparently today's Controller, "Melissa's already on the outside. LeCarreau sent her forward out of the loading yard but she said she'd wait for you in the street, so you'd better get a move on." You hear this just as you emerge into the brilliant sunlight of the loading yard, which the WAVE Hangar opens up onto. You can see LeCarreau standing, waiting, in the yard's centre, and can just make out the back of Kurt Weber's WAVE as he takes it out into the street beyond. The captain is apparently directing the emerging WAVE Riders to their positions for the day, sure enough...

"Officer Andrews," You hear LeCarreau's voice say over the radio, "we're sending you to the spaceport. In the event of something happening today, that's where the President's begin evacuated to. We're on harsh mode today; warn, detain, kill, in that order as each one fails to work." Looks like you got the quiet job, then. Trouble at spaceports was a rare occurence; they were well-guarded by private security staff. Nonetheless, it was at least not too far away. Just on the other side of the river...

Bakan
(I'm bored of describing people walking to their WAVEs again, so for the sake of argument you were one of the first people out of the Hangar, and you're already patrolling)

Having hoped the massive numbers of fellow cops being deployed would have translated into the possibility of some action, you were dissapointed to hear Captain LeCarreau order you into the suburbs north of the city, but nonetheless, unfortunatly, you now find yourself and your Kensai WAV trudging slowly down a street of attractive, whitewashes wooden houses. You must be in a pretty rich part of the city; the houses are big, and there's a lot of luxury cars out. You see a few people stopping on the sidewalk to watch you go by, many people still found the site of a WAV or WAVE exciting, despite the fact they'd been around for over a decade. You're tired; you didn't get much sleep, being woken up early to go out on patrol, and you didn't get any time for coffee this morning either, so you're in a state of semi-stupour as you continue down the street. Presently, howeber, you are interrupted from this quasi-slumber by Naomi Fletcher, one of the junior controllers, speaking over your radio.

"Bakan, do you copy?"

Name: John Reily
Callsign: Blue Wrench (Though he's used to people calling him Wrench, or even just Blue)
Age: 22
Rank: Officer

John graduated from Manhattan District High School with honours, having excelled in the field of Computer Science. Widely expected to continue on to college with his studies, he surprised everyone by enrolling in the NYPD's Academy. After having overcome initial difficulties in physical training, his intelligence and natural aptitude with computers and machinery singled him out for WAVE Rider duty, and he was switched to an intensive WAVE training course one year into his Academy life. Once more, he graduated with honours. A bit of a loner, he rarely mixes with the other riders, but has a good working relationship with his ground crewmen, who greatly respect his own opinions and abilities when it comes to taking care of the vehicle.

Advanced Sensors - gives you a better chance of spotting hidden units/etcetera, allows you to obtain a schematic of enemy WAVEs/vehicles along with damage, improves tracking abilities.

Heavy Machine Gun - fires at a higher rate than the Light Machine Gun, with clip size boosted to eighty rounds. The entire clip is expended in roughly four seconds of sustained fire. When fired in bursts, the HMG is accurate at medium range. It is very useful against infantry.

Re: The Sol War

"Yes, mon capitan. I'll do my best to secure the dangerous spaceport." Nick replided snappily, feeling a bit guilty about baiting LeCarreau, but figuring the veteran officer would more than make it up to him with punishment details: as this spaceport assignment obviously was. The joke, fortunately enough, was on him, as Nick and Melissa would undoubtedly spend the boring hours patroling the peaceful spaceport by . . . talking.

"Anything else I should know about before I head out on assignment, sir?" Nick asked, already moving his Kensai forward onto the street. Without waiting for a reply from the captain, Nick began to carefully pick his way down the street, carefully not to get too close to the buildings lining each side of the street . . . or the sidewalks near them. Although extremely rare, there was the occasional accidental death report of some idiot getting too close to a WAV's feet, and getting crushed underneath. Nick didn't want any kind of black spot of that magnitude on his record, as he was sure that LeCarreau would take advantage of it to ensure Nick remained on desk duty for the rest of his life.

"Would you just cheer up? It's a wonderful, sunny day, and we get to be outside. Not only that, but we don't actually have to do anything except look tough." Melissa said, sending the burst transmission on a secure channel that was to be used by the two pilots to communicate back and forth. Nick sighed, shook his head, and then proceded to continue down the street, following Melissa to the nearby bridge that would enable them to cross the river and reach the spaceport.

The Streets of Manhattan

PK
You begin to head south toward Government Plaza. The roads are pretty clear; it's a bit too early in the morning for the rush hour, and even so most commuters would use the city's highly efficient metro system. New York is the capital of the Sol Commonwealth, and as such the quality of its services is unrivalled. Unfortunatly, however, after rounding the corner from street to avenue, you find yourself stuck behind a school bus. Whilst this is going to slow you down considerably, it's a cause of delight for the kids trapped inside, who cluster at the back of the vehicle, looking with awe at your gigantic suit of robotic armour. You key to Control at base, and a few moments later recieve your reply.

"Phoenix, the Government Plaza is going to have to wait; we think the terrorists might be attacking already. I've got reports of trucks running the police checkpoints on all the major bridges into the city; I've got a Gunship dealing with one coming in from Brooklyn, but I need you to get to Capital Bridge and take care of two more. We're not sure about the target, but I've got scout Gunshios watching them, so I can redirect you if they lose you. Your orders are to intercept and destroy. The trucks could contain bombs, so be careful. If you get careless the whole block might go up." Naomi Fletcher, apparently the junior controller on duty today, responds over the radio. Capital Bridge was the rebuilt New York's main landmark; a gigantic bridge made entirely of shining, silver steel, supposedly symbolic of the war and bloodshed of which the city had been but one casualty. It meant turning left and heading eastwards; but this would at least get you out from behind the school bus...

"Mind your mouth, Officer Andrews," comes the reply from LeCarreau, over the private coms channel, "I overlook it, but your future superiors might not be so forgiving. As far as I can hear over the coms, the terrorists have already played their hand, so get to the spaceport as fast as you can, and don't get overconfident out there. LeCarreau out." Irritatingly, the captain often refuses to be baited in this manner. You can remember baiting drill instructors and such back at the Academy - and they were easy pickings, but LeCarreau is obviously more astute or more patient than they were...

You head out toward the spaceport - named "Unity" - and as you enter the street, Melissa falls in behind you. Obviously LeCarreau had decided to partner the two of you up for this mission. You exchange some idle chatter over a private coms channel as you head toward the bridge that will take you to the spaceport. The bridhe doesn't really have a name, but over time most people have come to call it the Unity Bridge, merely because it leads to the spaceport of the same name. It's an attractive bridge - a post war suspension one - and in the morning sunlight in gleams brilliantly. There are very few cars on the road, so the two of you make good progress. Suddenly, just as you reach the nearest end of the bridge, you see a gigantic plume of smoke billow into the air from a few kilometres up the road, from the spaceport. Seconds later, you hear LeCarreau's voice over the radio again, though this time you note he's on an open police frequency.

"Andrews! Goodheart! Staff at the spaceport are reporting an attack! A car bomb just took out the main security buildings, now...I'm getting reports of WAVEs...get up there as fast as you can, full throttle. Defend the spaceport, and if you need back up, give me a yell." Yells the captain, before going silent again, no doubt organising the rest of the WAVE Unit...

"Nick, we've got to get a move on. I'll follow your lead," Adds Melissa, also over the radio, though again she uses the private channel. Almost immediately, you hear a high pitched whining noise from outside the cockpit, and you can tell that Melissa has switched on her WAVE's siren, along with the flashing red warning light as well. WAVEs had little choice but to travel down roads, and at high speed that could be dangerous...

The Government Complex

(For the sake of argument, you left early and you've already got to your assigned location - Government Plaza)

You stand uneasily in Government Plaza, the vast paved square stretching out between the Presidencial Residence and the Commonwealth Senate building, watching the early morning tourists as they flock toward the massive ornamental fountain in the centre, which sent a spray of water high in the air and that, in the monring sunlight, lit up with the colours of the rainbow. You'd gone straight to Government Plaza as ordered by Police Captain LeCarreau, but noone else was here yet. Other than yourself and a few undermanned foot police checkpoints at all three of the road entrance (north, east and west) into the huge square comound, the place is practically unguarded. It is at this moment that you notice a plume of smoke billowing into the air on the horizon, up to the northeast. From your position, raise some distance off the ground, you can see it clearly, but apparently the police at the checkpoints and the tourists near the fountain haven't noticed yet. Maybe you should radio Control and find out what's going on...

"Roger that Control. I'm on my way. Crazy out"

Peter smiled to himself. At last he'd be able to do something other than cruise around. And he'd also have a reason to go a little faster. With his left hand, Peter pushed the throtal slowly forward, He felt the gunship leap, as its engines gained for power. He pulled back on the flight yoke with his right hand, gently easing the gunship up, shooting infront of another freight shuttle and giving their pilots a start.

As he cleared the top of the skyscrapers, Peter eased back the throtal slightly and banked left. Not wanting to get another warning for making too much noise cruising over the top of the buildings, he headed towards the bridge.

"Target in sight. Activating scanners"

Peter watched as the bridge, and the truck on in, came closer, as his gunship cruised towards them. He looked down at his console, trying to remember what his faithful ground had said about the new scanner systems. They weren't like the ones in the older gunships. His finger hoved over various controls, until he found the ones he was looking for. Remembering now what to do, he flik a few switches, activating the advanced sensors, and waiting for the readout to appear on his targeting display.

John didn't even have to reach very far to activate his comm-system.

"Control. This is Wrench in Government Plaza. I can see some smoke towards the northeast. Looks to be quite some distance away. Just wondering if there's anything I should know. Over."

He flicks another couple of switches and his WAVE starts booting up from 'sleep mode' which was designed to conserve power when not expecting immediate combat, or during transport. Several tourists turn to face him as the giant armoured frame starts moving. Cameras of all shapes and sizes, even an old-fashioned one with a mechanical shutter and an assortment of oversized black tubular lenses, focus on the WAVE. Some beep and others make simulated clicks as the members of the crowd take dozens of photographs. A small girl starts crying, as the sudden movement surprises her into dropping her ice-cream. Sighing, John silently hopes her parents aren't the overprotective type, liable to sue the city for their daughters 'psychological trauma', or something equally proposterous...

Almost immediately, you hear a high pitched whining noise from outside the cockpit, and you can tell that Melissa has switched on her WAVE's siren, along with the flashing red warning light as well. WAVEs had little choice but to travel down roads, and at high speed that could be dangerous...
Nick frowned slightly as Captain LeCarreau's grimacing face suddenly appeared on his comm screen. Glancing down at the monitor, Nick noticed that the channel number was one of the private ones used in WAV-to-WAV communications.

So, the captain wants to give me an extra special *ss-chewing, all of my own . . . great.

Sure enough, the captain immediately began his talk by lecturing Nick about how his "next superior might not be as forgiving", and so on and so forth. However, the captain was not quite done yet, and informed Nick that it appeared the terrorists were starting to show their hand. He also reminded Nick that he had better get over to the spaceport as quickly as possible, something he was already intent on doing. His lecture finished, LeCarreau cut the channel without much in the way of a goodbye.

Noticing that Melissa was his "wingman" for today, Nick allowed himself a small smile as he openned a channel to her WAV again.

"Hey "Skylark", guess who you're paired up with today?"

"Why, I don't know, "Templar". Could it be my knight in shining armor?" Melissa asked with a smirk, which for her was little more than a self-conscious grin.

"Indeed it is. Apparently mon capitan wants us over to the spaceport on the double. It seems the terrorists are already starting to make their moves."

"I see . . . do you think we should use our sirens and move to the spaceport as quickly as possible?" For a moment, Melissa's face was clouded with concern, prompting Nick to try to dismiss her fears with an unfelt chuckle.

"Naw . . . you know how much the Chief hates publicity. Can you imagine how many panicked phone calls the station would get if people saw two NYPD WAVs charging down the street, sirens blazing, and nothing obviously wrong? We certainly won't take our time, but I'm sure the Spaceport can take care of itself, at least for the two or three extra minutes that it should take for us to get that at normal speed.

Suddenly noticing a car double-parked in the street, Nick swore to himself as he was forced to make an immediate course-change in his Kensai's path. Working the control sticks furiously, Nick swung his Kensai's left foot up and around the illegally-parked car, and missed crushing its back bumper by mere inches. Nick considered logging a report to the standard officers on patrol just to make sure the b*stard that owned the car got paid back, but figured they had enough to deal with today. Just this once, the irresponsible driver would get away with it.

Nick and Melissa made the rest of the trip to the Unity bridge in silence, although Nick often wondered what Melissa was thinking of as they stomped along down the street. This recent terrorist threat? Their wedding? Her family? Nick eventually decided to satisfy his curiousity, and was about to ask her when suddenly a large plume of smoke appeared in the sky. It appeared to be coming from the spaceport.

A moment later, LeCarreau's face appeared on Nick's communications monitor again, and the seemingly inflappable officer was just a bit exicted as he shouted a report on the spaceport's status and Nick's new orders. After the captain cut the channel, Nick once again openned a channel with Melissa's WAV. As soon as the channel was open, Melissa began to speak. Evidently she had been awaiting his call.

"Nick, we've got to get a move on. I'll follow your lead." Melissa said, and even through his sealed cockpit, Nick could hear the sharp screech of a police siren as Melissa activated the one on her WAV. Knowing that the time for discretion had passed, Nick activated his own siren system, and brought his Kensai up to its own considerable top speed. Moving out onto the bridge, Nick took a moment to ensure the "Improved Engine" enhancements to his Kensai were operating correctly, and then activated them to boost his WAV's speed. Combined with the fact that the Kensai was fast, the engine upgrade should ensure that Nick reached the spaceport within a minute, perhaps two.

Although undoubtedly considered by his superiors as a rebel and perhaps even a bit of a goofball, Nick was all business when it came down to doing his job. Thus, when Naomi answered Nick's hail a few moments later, she was greeted by a slight frown and a hard stare, instead of the usual casual smirk from Nick.

"Naomi, I want you to see if you can find out whoever is in charge at the Spaceport currently, and patch me through to him if you can. I understand LeCarrearu is probably busy organizing the rest of the team, so that's why I'm relying on you for this. Call me back as soon as you find out anything. Nick out." Nick then broke the channel, and immediately openned up a new one with Melissa.

"Alright, thanks to our sirens anyone attacking the spaceport is probably going to know that we're coming, so we might as well charge in and make it look good. If there are no obvious hostiles in the area, then we'll try to link up with whatever survivors of the security force there are and go from there. Meanwhile, see if you can locate whatever frequency the security forces are using, and if we're able to access it. They probably have the best idea of what's going on. I'll try from my end too." Nick stared deeply into Melissa's green eyes for a moment before adding, "Be careful out there. Nick out."

Nick then cut the channel, and put all of his focus into getting the Kensai across the bridge at its top speed without tripping over its own feet, or inadvertently crushing something underfoot in his haste to get across.

"Phoenix acknowledges, control, changing course."

*Kurt relished the oppurtunity to get out from behind the bus, but that wasn't to say he disliked the children aboard it. He decided there was enough jusification for full sirens, and flicked them on, much to the delight of the kids pressed against the bus' rear window. The blinking yellow warning lights on his WAVE's shoulders changed to spinning red and blue ones, and the high pitched wail of the sirens flicked on as he swung the gigantic machine through the neccessary tight left turn. This was a smaller street, and several vehicles were parked extremely inconviently. Kurt considerd doing the impound crew's jobs for them by stepping on the cars, but it was only a momentary malicious thought. He gunned he engines, loving the sound of the imrovements Matt and Yvonne had bolted on. The Shogun was a nice machine, despite it not being up to military standards, and Kurt appriciated what his crewers could do with such a limited budget. To be honest, he appriciated being able to pilot a WAVE at all now, but that wasn't something to dwell on. There was a job to be done. He keyed for his route planner.*

"Sat Nav course plot, my location to capital bridge. Note target data from gunships on map."

*He increased speed to maximum, metal feet pounding the strange, almost spongy compound roads were layed with now, that allowed WAV/Es to navigate the streets without smashing great holes in the road with each step.*

Sounds fine. You equipped your WAVE yet?

The Brooklyn Bridge

Crazy
Arching out over the skyscrapers, you point the nose of your Gunship down at the bridge and - you can just about make it out from this distance - the truck, then throttle up, trying not to make too much noise. Swooping down toward your oblivious prey, you activate your Lynx's advanced sensors. Immediately, your onboard computer shows a wireframe schematic of the truck - old and ugly, but pretty sturdy. Gradually, as the sensors cycles through its various scan mods, the truck beings to fill out in more detail. The tires and the engine are picked out in dull red and bright orange respectively by the infra red scanner, while two more head signitures in the front of the truck and four in the back also show up - human contacts. Suddenly, right at the end of the scanning process, a scarlet red rectangular object reveals itself, in the back of the truck, between the four men, who are seated two on either side. That was an object the scanners had identified as a bomb - the AI must be pretty smart. Just as you reach the same level as the tops of the bridge's suspension towers, the truck reaches about three quarters of the way along it. The bridge is clear of traffic...

Government Plaza

Spritely Zombie
You only have to wait a few moments before you recieve a reply.

"We've had a car bomb explode at the spaceport, it's under attack. We're getting all kinds of crazy reports - Skylark ((Melissa Goodheart, NPC)) and Templar ((Nick Andrews, Inspectre)) will be there soon. We've got suspected truck bombs coming onto Manhattan from all the major bridges, but we don't know their targets yet, and we've got other officers on the case. I can't see any immediate threat to the Government Plaza yet, but reinforcements are on the way, so sit tight and report in if you get any trouble. Control over and out." Naomi Fletcher was apparently the luckless junior controller on duty today, no doubt she was having a hell of a time keeping track of everything at once. Reasoning that you'd better be ready for a fight even if there isn't an "immediate threat", you power your Shogun Mk I up, preparing it for action. All around you, systems and machinery whirr into life. Your onboard computer's screen flickers briefly, then bursts into life. It takes a few moments to boot itself up, and while you wait, you watch the tourists as they take advantage of a first-class photo oppurtunity, and the little girl, who you see is quickly taken aside and comforted by her mother, who shoots an icy glance in the direction of your WAVE's cockpit, though obviously she can't see you...

Abruptly, you hear a high pitched beeping noise sounding from your onboard computer. Surprise is quickly overcome by disbelief, as you recognise it as the "Hostile Prozimity" alarm. They were unanimously left over on the NYPD's WAVEs from back when the vehicles had served the military, and sounded when WAVEs bearing an enemy registration - or indeed no registration, which meant they were of illegal manufacture in the first place - was approaching the vicinity. Looking down at your onboard computer, you can see your active scanners already at work. The results come in; two WAVEs, unidentified (this is very unusual) design, emerging from the water on the beach south of the compound - behind the Presidential Residency. A wireframe schematic of this mysterious design appears on your onboard computer's screen a moment later, and instantly you can tell that you're the first person in the NYPD to see the design; it's not one that you have ever seen before, and you know more WAVE designs from sight than do most people. The WAVE is fairly short, but very slender. Your scanners haven't been able to pick up any details on weapons yet, but your mechanically-honed eyes quickly spot the extensive thruster systems built into the walkers' backs - they looked very manouevreable. A flash from one of the antique mechanical cameras draws your attention back to the hundred-or-so tourists clustered around the fountain - they haven't seen the other WAVEs yet...

Unity Spaceport

Inspectre
You active your siren and your warning lights and kick the Kensai into full throttle. You can hear the gigantic machine's booming footsteps as it crashes down the compound road surface toward the spaceport. Melissa, having had the head start, is in front. You follow on behind her. Together, you pass the last row of houses and find the road flanked instead by thick woodland. The plume of smoke is drawing ever closer, and now several more have joined it. Just as the concrete walls of the spaceport come into view, you see the tip of another explosion, visible just above them, and then another plume of smoke reaching up for the sky. Melissa throttles down, coming to a halt just in front of the gate. You can see a pair of private spaceport security guards rush out of their booth at the side of the road to raise the metal barrier blocking entrance into the complex - though you could easily have stepped over it. Presently, you get your reply from Naomi, though it's a minute late. She looks quite flustered on the vidlink - obviously she was getting a lot of calls.

"Sorry about the delay, Nick, all hell's breaking loose. We've got suspected truck bombs all over the city...anyway, I can link you through to this guy called Mark Lorman, he's the Head of Spaceport Security. Hold on..." The vidlink closes and the line goes silent. A few moments later, the vidlink screen flickers into life again, this time showing the spaceport's logo. Obviously Mark Lorman didn't have a camera handy. Presently, noise blares over your cockpit's speakers, the sounds of battle - gunfire, screaming and occasionally an explosion.

"This is Lorman, you must be the WAVE Riders," Comes a male voice, presumably Lorman's, from the radio. He is shouting, apparently trying to make his voice heard over the din, "We're under attack here, they're WAVEs, three of 'em, and they're not any design that I've seen before. A car bomb went off five minutes ago, that took out a lot of our guys and all our heavy equipment, then in the confusion these guys got in through our perimeter wall. They're Columbian separatists, no doubt about it, one of them radioed me to try and get us to surrender the comple-" He is cut off by the sound of a massive explosion, and you see another plume of smoke hurled up into the sky. The line goes dead, hissing with static...

"Nick, we'd better get in there fast," says Melissa, over a radio-only channel, apparently trying to save time.

Somewhere South of NYC...

Zappa
"Sensors aren't picking up anything yet," replies Craser, "you're right, this sucks. I hear- wait, I've got a contact. It's big, pretty far out into the sea. Focusing the sensors in that direction...it's the tanker. Wait, that's not all. I've got two- no, six smaller contacts. Two going up into the air, four going...into the water?" she trails off, clearly confused, before carrying on. "I can't raise either of the others on coms, the fog must be causing interference, either that or my new coms unit is shorting out again...we'd better go check it out." Even pretty far out from the land, the tanker still shouldn't be in water deeper than your WAVE is tall, and even if it is, the cockpit is enclosed...

Manhattan Island, near to Capital Bridge...

PK
You acknowledge the command and switch on your siren and warning light, giving the kids in the back of a bus a brief moment of excitement and glee before you slow sharply down to take the corner left, sending the bus out in front of you. You thruttle up, having turned to face left, and start pounding down the street toward Capital Bridge. Hopefully you'd be able to reach it before the trucks got off the Manhattan end, and likely split up. As you approach the final block toward the bridge, you see a flash of light and a burst of flame, followed by a tower of smoke, rising up from up ahead, from up on the bridge.

"Phoenix, one of the scout Gunships just tried to take out a tyre and missed, the thing blew right up. The pilots are reporting a massive hole in the bridge, almost severed completely, so we know the other truck's got a bomb in it now - and a big one," Naomi breaks in over the radio, "I'm trying to think of some way for you to...ah! Central Park isn't far away, see if you can heard the truck into there, then blow it up. Shouldn't be anyone in there at this time of day. Head it off at the bridge and drive it down the waterfront along the right hand street, then turn it right again at the second avenue down. Once it's on that road, make sure it keeps going straight ahead, it should run straight into the park. Good luck." The line goes silent again. You finally reach the bridge, and you can see the thick black cloud of smoke now filling the air above it. Presently, you spot the truck, tearing along the road toward you. It's almost off the bridge...

"I can't raise either of the others on coms, the fog must be causing interference, either that or my new coms unit is shorting out again...we'd better go check it out." Even pretty far out from the land, the tanker still shouldn't be in water deeper than your WAVE is tall, and even if it is, the cockpit is enclosed...
right... not too close tough, those smaller ones are probably escorts, I'd prefer sniping them out of the way, if you don't mind...

Tom, checking his radarscreen, suddonly notices the screen is completely blank. hitting it a few times, he hears a faint zooming, and the dots appear; stearing his WAVE towards the dots, he starts calculating the distances to every unit, and sends an encrypted message stating a possible ID on the tanker to the base, so that, if need be, backup units can be easily dispatched to their location. Moving at a steady pace and keeping the dots in sight, Tom waits almost impatiently to get into sniperrange, so he can get back to his own little world, where he decides who lives, and who dies...

"Control, this is Crazy. Target has been identified. Confirm explosives on board, repeat, they've got a bomb. Reading 6 tangos in the truck. Permission to engage?"

"Confirmed Crazyboy. You have permission to use any force necessary"

"Thank you."

Peter fliked a couple of switches, activating his targeting computer, and arming his nose mounted rotatry chaingun, which started spinning. He throtaled back slightly, and dived his gunship to the left and down, heading towards the 'deck'. He leveled out ten meters above the road and pushed the throtal forward, jetting towards the truck.

As Peter neared the center of the bridge, he slowed down too a hover, and switched on the loud speaker.

"This is the NYPD. Stop the truck now, or I'll be forced to open fire. I repeat, stop the truck Now"

Not thinking that the terrorists inside the truck would take any notice, Peter carefully manuvered his gunship, making slight and small movements, aiming the 30mm rotary chaingun towards the front right tyre of the truck. If they didn't stop, they would run straight into his gunsights. If that happened, he would then gently squeeze the trigger, and rake the fire from the right tyre, across the lower part of the radiator and onto the left tyre. And they the truck seemed likely to explode, he had his left hand on the throtal to ready push his gunship up.

Re: The Sol War

John spends a few seconds thinking on the best course of action. He makes a decision and starts entering instructions into the computer. He flicks on the comms, now tuned to the same frequency as the checkpoint police radios.

"This is John Reily, NYPD Waverider squadron, Callsign Blue Wrench. My WAVEs sensors just detected two WAVES of unknown design and intent exiting the water south of the Presidential Residency. Start getting people out of the square, as quickly as possible."

He didn't even bother waiting for a reply as he retuned the comms to HQ's frequency.

"Two waves of unknown design just left the water south of the Presidential Residency. I've notified the checkpoint guards, they should hopefully be getting the people out of here as fast as possible." reaching over he hit the sirens. Tapping a few more command into his computer it started recording comms-chatter, as well as relaying as much information back to headquarters as he could.

The second he turned on the sirens almost everyone in the plaza turned to stare at him. Luckily most had moved to see what the commotion was about at the checkpoints, so the odds of anyone foolishly diving underneath his WAVEs armored feet was unlikely. He deftly maneuvered it around until he was facing in the direction of the other WAVEs and slowly started advancing towards them. Once more he manipulated his comm settings, setting it to a wide-band transmission.

"To the unidentified WAVEs south of my position. Halt." Inwardly he cringed. WAVE-to-WAVE fighting hadn't been part of his agenda for the day and if the two pilots were fanatics, then such an announcement would do little to dissuade them.

"This is the NYPD. You are in possession of unregistered WAVEs in an urban area. Power down, and exit your vehicles. Signal your acknowledgement..."

"Acknowledged."

*Kurt unsheathed his Police WAVE Shotgun, thinking that perhaps it might be neccessary shortly. The truck was just coming off the bridge now, and Kurt brought his Shogun in from the left of the bridge, attempting to keep the entire street blocked, so the truck would have no option but to take a right. It did so, following the waterfront. Kurt thought it would probably be best at that point to give a verbal warning. After all, there was probably going to be an enquiry after this, best to do things properly. He flicked on the external speakers.*

"This is the NYPD. Cease and desist your activities. Stop your vehicle or you will be fired upon."

*As expected, the vehicle in question took absolutely no notice. Kurt grimaced, and continued after the truck, now heading towards full speed. The first turning passed by, and Kurt decided on a method of making it go in the direction he wanted it to. He could combine a warning shot with function. Aiming his shotgun while running at top speed wasn't easy, but he'd done harder things in a WAVE. He made sure to aim well wide, as he didn't want any stray pellets hitting the explosive truck. The shot left a few holes in the pavement, but it was definately prefferable to blowing it up where it was. Kurt watched the truck skid into the avenue he'd shepparded it into, and pumped his shotgun, bringing a new shell into the breach. He swung his WAVE after it, knowing that the truck was at least heading for somewhere he could safety dispose of it.*

ooc// where's my 135 mil mounted? Also, I'm not sure how it could turn right twice off the bridge, since that should put it in the water (I think) so I made it go left instead //ooc

Upon reaching the gate to the spaceport, Nick smirked and shook his head at the guards bothering to raise the gate. His facial expression returned to a serious stare, however, as Naomi suddenly checked back in with him.

Fortunately, she'd been able to find Nick someone to talk to at the spaceport, despite being incredibly busy herself. A moment later, she patched him in to the man, some security guard named Mark Lorman. Lorman quickly filled him in on the situation, and Nick frowned deeply as he listened to the sounds of an intense gun battle being waged in the background. Suddenly, contact with Lorman was lost, and yet another dark plume of smoke reached up into the sky.

"Nick, we'd better get there fast." Melissa said, and Nick nodded as he continued to push his WAV forward, trying to eek every last bit of speed he could out of it.

"Agreed. Alright, as soon as we get there, get a lock onto one of those Columbian WAVs. I'll target one of the others, and tell them to surrender. From the sounds of it, I doubt the arrival of two police WAVs is going to make much difference to them, so unless they stop immediately, I want you to start firing. It would be nice if we could cripple and capture one of these guys to learn what their own plans are, but we're going to be initially outnumbered: do what you have to do, and worry about the reports and survivors later. I want you back in one piece. Nick out."

Nick then cut the comm channel, and started mentally preparing himself and his Kensai for battle. Outside of the simulator, Nick could only think of a handful of times in which the NYPD had been forced into a WAVE-on-WAVE engagement. Unless there was a miracle, and within the next minute or so, he and Melissa would be embroiled in such a rare occurence.

*Yawning, Bakan tried to strech his arms out as much as possible. These shifts were taking more and more out of him each week, for it seems that whenever he manages to fall asleep, he is instantly called to patrol. Looking down, he sees several children watching him with gleams on their faces, no doubt wishing they were inside a WAV. Bakan was like that once, way back in the day. However now being on the inside of it, it was much less glamorous than it first appeared. Blinking as his comm goes off, Bakan reaches over and activates his comm.*

"Bakan here, what's going on?"

In the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean...

Zappa
"You sure? Those airborne ones look like Gunships to me...wait, they're moving away, and fast, they must be Gunships. Wait...I've got another contact, you see that?" Asks Janette, and sure enough, you can. A new contact - profile of a small boat of some kind - has appeared on your sensors, and is moving toward the tanker. "I'll get this new ship's ID...looks like a coast guard cutter. Shit...I can't raise it's commander on the coms, he'd better watch his step. There's something up with that tanker..." she trails off. You see that the dark blue waters of the Atlantic have now reached up to your WAVE's "waist". All systems appear to be functioning normally...with a stroke of thought, you get the tanker's ID and com it back to base. You remember reading on the roster that Naomi Fletcher was the mission controller working the base today, and sure enough her voice answers after a few moments' pause.

"Thanks for the ID, Hangman. I'm forwarding it to the dock Harbourmaster's office so he can check it out, but I doubt it'll come up with anything interesting - looks like a normal oil tanker. Are you still with Sergeant Howard and Officer Deacon ((the other cop who was on the night shift))? I can't raise either of them on the coms..." She sounds anxious, for some reason. It was probably just the fog, as Craser had suggested, "if you need it, request backup. I don't know if we'll have anyone free though - the shit's really hit the fan back in the city." What she's talking about here, you can't tell. The same barrier of fog that hides the tanker also hides the city from view. You're only a few hundred metres from the tanker now.

"Hold up," you hear Janette say over the radio. Her Kensei a few paces in front of you, stops, "there's something wrong with my sensors, I'm detecting a huge energy spike an- shit!" As she shouts this last word, an orange light suddenly flares up in the distance, distorted by the fog. Your sensors show a better picture: the onboard computer emits a warning tone as the coastguard vessel's blip dissapears from your radar screen - the computer had detected a gigantic explosion, and the sensors were showing small, unidentified objects falling through the air and into the water all over the place, apparently shrapnel. "They just blew up the coast guard ship!" Janette exclaims with disbelief, but that's the least of your worries. Two of the four blips that decended into the water and dissapeared have reappeared again, and they're coming out of the water a short distance in front of you...they stop. Then, seconds later, the sea in front of you explodes with a flash of searing light. It takes you a moment to realise that the light is coming from thrusters - WAVE thrusters. The two previously unseen walkers drop down into the water in front of you and Janette, the sea up to mid-chest on their steel frames. The fog is still there - though it seems to be clearing up, and you can see the two WAVEs clearly regardless. You don't recognise the design...for a moment or two, the four of you just watch eachother silently. Then, breaking the staring contest, both of the enemy WAVEs raise Heavy Machine Guns and let rip...

Above the Brooklyn Bridge...

Crazy
Swooping down over the centre of the bridge, you flick on the Gunship's loudspeaker. Back in the old F-1s, you'd used this device many a time on various petty thugs in order to lay down the law. This, however, somehow felt a little different. With your red warning light still flashing, you administer a verbal warning to the terorirsts, not expecting them to take notice. And, indeed, they don't. You line up the shot, watching the truck come closer and closer toward you, seeming to move insanely fast. If the chaingun round went just a little bit off to the left, you could hit the engine and blow the entire thing up along with a good part of the bridge. The truck's wheel comes into sight, you open fire...

For the first time, your F-10's chaingun shatters the almost surreal peace of the cockpit, roaring into life, blazing with muzzle flash. The left wheel of the truck instantly explodes, torn off its axle by the high-calibre bullet, and you rake fire across to the right wheel - it turns out, needlessly. The left wheel gone, the truck leans forward and to the left, and you see sparks fly as the steel chasis connects with the road. Seconds later, with its back wheels still turning, the truck's canopied rear flips over its front, sending the vehicle flying through the air toward the left side of the bridge. A fraction of a second later, the truck's massive weight connects with the steel suspension cable flanking the bridge, which give way. You hear an unearthly noise as five of the huge steel cables suddenly snap and give way, the severed ends wheeling back from the tension, two of them scoring long lines in the road surface. The truck, already battered from its collision with the cables, continues spinning right into the water, which it hits with a gigantic plume of white foam. The water begins to settle, then, after a few seconds of only bubbles, you see something flash beneath the murkey surface, and another, even bigger plume of water is sent rocketing skywards. This too falls back to join the sea, and then, for a few moments, everything is calm again. The feeling down't last long. Your onboard computer begins beeping as it frantically tries to get your attention...doesn't look like any of the terrorists made it, a quick check of the waters doesn't reveal any survivors swimming for the shore.

Government Plaza

Spritely Gokan
Although you cut away from the frequency too quickly to hear the foot officers' replies, you see them lower barriers at the entrances to prevent more tourists from coming in as you manouevre out, and you spot two squad cars, also from the checkpoints, rushing inwards toward the fountain with sirens blaring. Seconds later you see a fellow cop get out of one of the cars with a loudspeaker, and a few seconds after that the crowd of tourists is on the move, running toward the checkpoints to escape from this unseen threat. The two WAVEs are unfortunately on the opposite side of the Presidential Residence, and so you face a difficult choice. You can either violate the privacy of the most important man in the Commonwealth by stomping through his garden, over the decorative wrought iron railings separating the building from the square, or you can go out around the building's miniature compound-within-a-compound. You hear rather than see an explosion from the other side of the house, and elect that the quickest route is the best. Throught the cockpit canopy, you can see a couple of Commonwealth Marines - dressed in parade uniform but holding assault rifles, rushing round the building to meet whatever invaders dared to attack the Residence on their watch, though it was doubtful they'd be able to do anything with bullets alone...they dissapear out of sight behind a corner of the massive house just as you report the situation to Officer Fletcher back in mission control.

"I hear you, Wrench. Look's like everyone's tied up at the moment, but I might be able to get Phoenix ((Kurt Weber, PK)) to your position in a moment. Just try and hold them off. This is a hell of a big operation the 'rists are pulling off, I've alerted Fort Dwight and the National Guard; CDF troops should arrive in a few minutes. Mission control out." And, with that, you're alone again. As you pass the corner that you saw the marines, still dressed smart and expecting another day of looking good for tourist photographs, dissapear around, you key in a wideband frequency, aiming for the unidentified WAVEs, and order them to surrender. For a few moments, there is only silence, then, seconds later, you hear two voices laughing hysterically, the sound reverberating around your cockpit. One of the voices stops laughing to utter a long string of Spanish that you fail to understand. Apparently it was something humorous, because his companion begins laughing even harder. Then, silence. They cut the channel. Looks like they aren't going to come quietly. You round the last corner, the sea coming into view...

You round the corner to a sscene the likes of which you have never seen before. Two of the dress-uniformed marines are mangled corpses surrounded by blood a few paces in front of where your WAVE is now standing, their bodies broken by high calibre WAVE rounds. Another of their companions lies slumped against a tree a few metres further one, bleeding heavily, but perhaps still alive. As you look on, the last of the four guard marines stands on the white marble steps leading up to the rear doors of the Residence, firing his assault rifle at one of the WAVEs, bearing down on him, stubbornly refusing the abandone his post. The man runs out of ammunition and slams another clip in, raising the rifle just as the WAVE's foot descends on him, obliterating the brave soldier in a cloud of crimson gore. The WAVE, its right foot stained with blood, turns to face you. Its companion, standing about ten metrs behind it near a crater that breaks the rear iron railinga - apparently the explosion you heard - does the same. You hear a low, menacing chuckle over the radio, followed by a few words in Spanish from each. The first WAVE - the bloodstained one - stands back and lowers its heavy machine gun. The second one steps forward, raising its own. Aside from the heavy machine guns that each WAVE holds, you can also see that each carries an eight-shot rocket pod on its right shoulder...

An Avenue of New York, the trees of Central Park looming up ahead...

PK
((135mm is mounted on your WAVE's right shoulder. I'm sure you'll make use of it soon...))

Your shotgun blast, the pellets as they are being WAVE-sized shotgun pellets, rips the road surface to pieces. The truck driver, evidently taken aback, turns sharply and screeches around to the left, the truck hinging dangerously on two wheels for a few moments before righting itself, and then tearing down the avenue Naomi had pointed you toward. Giving chase, your WAVE's mighty footsteps sounding like a pair of collosal drums pounding out their rythm to the city, you see the treetops of Central Parks' summer-green residents rise into view above the red brick wall that now surrounds it. You see flashing lights up ahead, and as you look more closely, you realise that Fletcher must have directed foot officers in squad cars to back up, as two of these vehicles now block the road leading left and right alongside the park on both sides of the road you're now on. The truck driver, seeing no hope of escape other than that offered by the park, makes for a low brick archway covering the entrance, w brown gravel path visible running through the grass beyond it. As anyone would have seen, the truck fails to clear the arch, and the top of it is torn off along with the entirity of the rear canopy, revealing the occupants of the back of the truck to you. Four shellshocked-looking men, clad in shabby-looking clothes and all with a scarlet red bandana, as well as sinister-looking crate in the centre of the truck's floor, lashed securely into place by lengths of rope. Obviously the truck was carrying a bomb. The vehicle continues on, careering wildly down the gravel path, lined on each side with trees. As Naomi had predicted, the park is completely clear of people. At this range, a 135mm shot ought to be easy, but then if it went astray...

Unity Spaceport

Inspectre
"Sure thing Nick," says Melissa, responding to your suggestion of "firing first and explaining later". She sounds worried. You throttle forwards, and she follows suit. Just as you do so, a fiery explosion rips aprt the end of the concrete perimeter wall next to the gate, knocking both of the guards off their feet, and peppering your WAVE with fragments of rocky debris. Already on the move, your WAVEs continue on through the cloud of dust and smoke thrown up by the detonation...

You emerge on the other side. Up ahead are the massive starship hangars, and beyond that the launch pads. You can see the massive spire of the sparport's control tower rearing up into the sky. Thankfully, those buildings don't appear to have been touched yet. Unfortunatly, the ones nearer the wall have. One building in particular is completely devastated, a blazing inferno of orange flame, with a number of blue-clad corpses, unfortunate security guards, sprawled around it. Apparently, that used to be the security building. You can see two WAVEs striding off into the distance, toward a ship on the nearest launchpads. Your onboard computer analyses the massive, destroyer-sized ship automatically. Its registration number reveals it as a merchant, and after a few moments, a name appears next to the ID. Gunboat Diplomat. Your attention is directed, however, mainly on the two WAVEs near the wrecked building, both of which are now looking at you. weapons raised. Melissa acts first, raising her Kensai's heavy machine gun and opening fire. The roar of the weapon's report sounds in your ear...

Presently, out in the quiet suburbs north of the city...

Bakan
"We've got a situation here back at the city. I've got reports of terrorist attacks all over the place. Government Plaza is under attack," Officer Fletcher tells you in a rapid but clear way, apparently oblivious to just how shocking the news was. The President of the Commonwealth lived in Government Plaza..."but you can't get there; a truck bomb blew a massive hole in Capital Bridge." Capital Bridge was New York's most famous landmark, a beautiful, white steel alloy suspension bridge leading northwards out of the city. "Instead, I want you to go to the Unity Spaceport. You'll be going cross couintry, but I expect you'll be able to manage. It should be fairly quiet untill you get there, give me a situation report when you do, mission control out." You watch on, perplexed, as people rush out into the street from a few of the houses, pointing at the horizon behind your back with their hands over their mouths. You hear a few screams. Turning, you see several pillars of smoke towering into the air above New York City, most of them from the direction of the spaceport, but one, you can see clearly, coming from Capital Bridge...

Re: The Sol War

John swore, loudly and monosyllabically. He started hammering in computer commands, his hands a blur across the touch sensitive screen. He hit the comms button.

"This is your last warning, give yourself..."

He entered the final command. To his upper right he was aware of a muffled clanking noise as a high-explosive shell was loaded into the 135mm cannon. He didn't even bother aiming, he just pointed the cannon as low as it would go, and fired. Simple yet effective acoustic dampeners muffled the sound, making it seem like it was several hundred meters away, but the sound was still deafening. The HE shell struck the ground, probably a little closer than the ground crew back at base would be happy with. The explosion threw up a cloud of debris and dust, the shockwave causing a small ripple to appear in the sea, before it was devoured hungrily by larger, natural waves.

The effects of the hurriedly cobbled set of commands were simple. The instant after the shell fired, his WAVE dived back behind the wall with only minimal guidance from himself. Several short bursts of machine gun fire ripped through the debris where he'd been standing.

His sensor readings were slightly fuzzy due to the dust and debris floating around, but the dust was clearing. Sensor images nonetheless flashed up on the screen, showing what information they'd been able to gather during the brief confrontation. He checked his own heavy machine gun and reached over to deactivate the safety. He knew his best bet was to hope he managed to hit one of the rocket pods. Self-contained rocket weapons on WAVE scale were risky, while they certainly added firepower to almost any design, the necessity for light-weight construction meant they were lightly armoured, and a single hit to a propellant core or warhead and the entire pod would go up. He keyed in a simple command and a wireframe image depicting simplified sensor data overlaid his exernal camera imagery...

[ooc]Not sure how you wanted combat-type bits handled. Hope this is OK.[/ooc]

Re: The Sol War

Peter watched as the truck went flying head-over-heels into the water below, damaging the bridge on the way.

"Hmm. That wasn't meant to happen..."

He flicked on the radio again, calling back control

"Control, control, this the Crazyboy. Terrorists neutralised. They won't be threatening anyone again. Uh... you might want to call the Highway maintainence guys over to the bridge though. Anything else you need me for?"

Re: The Sol War

one class two weapon-Heavy Machine Gun - fires at a higher rate than the Light Machine Gun, with clip size boosted to eighty rounds. The entire clip is expended in roughly four seconds of sustained fire. When fired in bursts, the HMG is accurate at medium range. It is very useful against infantry.

one class 2 equipment -Basic Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) - disrupts enemy sensor waves, making your WAVE more difficult to lock on to. Especially effective against missiles, which rely on targetting systems to home in.

One class three equipment - Improved Thrusters

Re: The Sol War

*Eye's narrowing, Jason Stend quickly moved his hands over the controls of his worn Kensai control's. Weapon systems, normally dormant during patrl light up as power is routed to them. Lighting up on his H.U.B. are the readouts from the advance sensors. Grabbing the controls, all traces of sleep vanishing as the adrenaline rushes through his system, Jason Stend turns his WAV towards the Unity Spaceport. One of his HUB monitors is a map of the area, with country being represented towards his destination. Pushing one of the levers forward, Jason Stend sends his WAV forward, chrunging through the terrain as quickly as possible, while keeping a careful eye on his sensors.*
