I got one of those cool but illegal...
...radio transmitter things you can plug into a standard headphone socket on your walkman/discman/ipod/whatever.
Very handy, but more importantly, rather amusing if set to operate on Radio 4's frequency. It's nice to pull up to some traffic lights next to some middle aged people and watch them start fiddling desperately with their car radio. At this point i'll usually arrange for Dr Dre to be played.
That's right kids, i'm a terrororist!

Re: I got one of those cool but illegal...
Illegal? I can't see why, portable fm transmitters aren't exactly some 30 metre tower looming out and taking over stations completly.
Here at least they're common place and considered more of a gimmick than practicle implement, much less something for illegal activities.
Then against I realise you people live under tyranus rule from the broadcasting authority.

Technically, you're a pirate.
Although low-power transmitters ought to be legal. In the US, I think it's a 1.5 Watt power limit (which is enough for a range of 10 meters or so--sufficient to mess with the car next to you).
Some tracks to have handy: - 5 minutes of silence
- 'Aliens have landed' newscast
- An assortment of 'ethnic' tracks (e.g., cut into that loud obnoxious hip-hop station with a nice polka)

Re: I got one of those cool but illegal...
the most obvious legal response in the US would be to sue the guy using it.
now that's not practical in england because of the way we assess damages so far better to criminalise it.
see how 2 different legal systems cope differently with the same problem
hyperactive nerds.

On what grounds and for what damages? Such low-power transmitters are legal in the US. Good luck finding a lawyer to take that case.

Re: I got one of those cool but illegal...
actually, i was going to make something similar to one of those for my A2 Electronics project (an AM version, so it wouldn't have been great sound quality). I decided that i couldn't be bothered and made an AM receiver instead

Re: I got one of those cool but illegal...
its not a competition dear.
its a question of proper motivation to bother to explain US tort damages to a non lawyer.
see when i post something with my 'lawyer hat' on and it is questioned i prefer to only respond to that question if it will actually be read.
it saves my time, it saves yours.
its a win win

Re: I got one of those cool but illegal...
I bought a nice FM stereo transmitter in kit form a few years ago and it worked very well. From Canada over the internet. Good quality sound. Legal to sell here (UK) illegal to put together and use otherwise in UK. Lucky Canadians. Pity I lost it with stuff when ex-gf chuched stuff out one day :/
