I totally understand what your saying but you should know more then any1 here (being a mod) that flametary posting is NOT the best way to give advice lol. Do you usually allow the GD posters to rip apart newbies to the forum? Because it is one thing to say "omg, pls not another of these threads" and its another to remark about bashing the posters head against a rock, lol.

Those kind of comments only fair well if the sender & receiver know each other:/

These examples are all fairly civil, although it could be argued that the parodies of the form are confrontational rather than just constructed for the purpose of irony. I must point out that I don't think that's the case, however.

Once you get to a certain point, there just aren't any more interesting ways to say "I disapprove of this thread paradigm", so it tends to get more openly aggressive.

I quite like the way GD has evolved. It's really very rare that a poster gets any sort of abuse unless they post a low quality thread. This has nothing to do with the fact you're new (although the fact you're new caused you to post the low quality thread). Nobody even commented on the fact you hadn't posted at all/often on GD in your star wars episode III thread because good threads are welcomed no matter who posts them.

Clearly, this thread hadn't much potential, but that is only because of the types/personalities(for the lack of a better word) of posters who inhabit GD. So many whine about the lack of active/new posters on GD without realising that there're a few cases that it's they themselves to blame. The trend/habit of attempting to portray oneself as witty and/or superior by vilifying users* is slightly irritating considering that the usual premise is 'shit post/poster' or 'troll' for the vilification. The hypocrisy isn't rampant but fairly featured throughout here, and defended only by the history and the name held by those who commit, which of course is sufficient providing they are consistent to allow occasional drops in quality but when the quantity of crap increases, it gets tiresome. It's not like GD doesn't get visited by fairly intelligent and interesting people (I mean, ones who don't already post here.) I can think of quite a few who I converse with on IRC who're put off by the far too repetitive aggressive attempts of appearing 'cool' to post much/at all.


*I'm not defending most of these trolls/retards or this thread, but by telling them that "they should know who they're talking to and behave" or some troll rather than explaining at least once why they're being shit isn't helping anyone. The ratio of something comedic spawning out of trolling shit users to nothing interesting favours largely to the latter. (With notable exceptions eg: that Dace & TSM thread - a midnight's summers dream.)

General Discussions is far too 'complex' for the average PA player to post without being aware of the other factors involved, it's more like a trap where if you post something which would qualify under 'General Discussions' but has been discussed to death - the generic Da Vinci Code & Donnie Darko threads come to mind, would pretty much result in neg-repping and constant trolling. Sometimes I think there should be another subforum for the pa players to use for 'GD' purposes, for they(we) are generally far too crap to post here without being dragged into needless crap.

GD is not victimising you because you dont post here
GD is not actively flaming you in any way that id consider 'omg ban him' material.

What has happened is that a rather poor thread that really was never going to 'fly' was shot down rapidly in a sucession of posts saying 'this isnt going to work'

Now : Whilst these 'it isnt going to work' posts may not be using the loveliest words of the English language they do convey the identicle message of 'this is a pretty crap thread'.

Whilst some of your points are valid I think its fairly safe to say that its all been blown way out of proportion. GD doesnt victimise people it doesnt recognise. Recently theres been a spat of new unfamiliar faces posting here. Some 'get it'. Others 'dont'. Those who dont are told where they are going wrong.

By 'Get it', i mean they realise this isnt your average run of the mill retard forum where people post things like 'MY FAVORITE COLOUR' and get 22,000 replies. Its fairly distinct from most because the level of intelligent conversation is (usually) above par.

Obviously it has its down moments but for the most part the threads on the forum are fairly interesting and a 'good read'.


The users who come here and add to GD are embraced with open arms. The ones that post crap threads are usually shot down. This either results in them never posting here again or it means they think before they do it next time. (which imo is quite a good thing).
Its kind of like a self regulating forum!



The thing is that there seems to be this 'myth' that if you post on General Discussions and your name isnt recognised then people will automatically begin firing at you. This isnt true. If someone whos not recognised makes a good thread people reply to it and discussion commences!

If someone who isnt familiar posts a crap thread then they are usually informed its a bit crap.
ITs when they take offence that the 'problems' are created.

That is total sh1te mate. Tbh i cant believe any forum mod would make such a comment, your identity is VITAL in net communities and each & every posters name conveys a message. Be that one of "this poster is a well respected & liked regular" compared with "this poster is unknown", to give 2 simple examples.

Ok, you seriously need to stop posting here until youve got a lot more internet experience under your belt. Now this kind of thing acceptable is acceptable within some primitive communities on IRC where you dont always have time to type out a long message particularly if you're new to the internet and havent yet learned how to touchtype, but it is generally frowned upon forums based communication, where you are expected to utilize the increased time you have in order to make your messages presentable and coherent. Now if you're using expressions like 'u' because you are genuinelly unable to type full words at a reasonable speed, I would suggest checking out mavis beacon - a program aimed at increasing people's typing speed. Being able to type fast is a very important skill in today's increasingly computerized world, and will certainly increase your career prospects as well as your online reputation. If you look around a forum like this one, you will notice that the majority of posters are very particular about using correct grammer and spelling in their posts, and the ones that fail to do this generally tend to be the ones who are widely disliked.

Like IRC, becoming competent at internet forums is something that requires practice, but this is not the place for you to gain the experience you need. It's like anything really - you have to start small, and only move up a stage when youre ready. There are plenty of forums which would be receptive to your style of communication, such as slashdot or free republic. I'd advise you to use them as 'training grounds' until you feel comfortable moving on.

Anyway, good luck with whatever avenue you decide to pursue. Feel free to message me if you need any more specific advice about IRC or general internet matters - I usually check my PMs here every couple of days, and you can sometimes find me on netgamers as 'nodrog'.
