I have lost some weight, almost but not quite died of a heart attack, have diabetes and now, apparently, as pointed out in another thread, am starting to laugh it up with....uh....whatever.
Still love sugar and would eat it by the spoonful if my wife wouldn't beat me for being bad.

Well it sounds like you MIGHT POSSIBLY bennefit from not eating sugar anymore.
In the past two weeks I've cut out nearly all carbohydrate from my diet (<50g at least). I'm eating bacon, sausages and burgers all fried in butter. Supplemented with eggs, nuts, cheese, berries, peanut butter with 85% cocoa dark chocolate. I'm getting some pretty intense carb cravings but apparently they subside. My belt feels looser :/

Re: So it turns out fat is fine.
That sounds very nice, however, you need to keep a watch on your ketones. Ketoacidosis can kill you. It destroys some internal organs in some fashion or the other. Please look it up and note the symptoms which let you know if you are developing it. Probably let you know how to balance it out. Also be aware that sugar acts somewhat in the same fashion as salt in that it causes you to retain water. This means quick weight loss and a looser belt. However, if you stop the diet, the weight and inches return very quickly.

ketoacidosis is only a problem if you have diabetes!!
Yeah the waterweight is a bit of a falsedawn for the first few weeks in terms of "weight" loss, but I really am nearly down a belt hole!!!!!!! Apparently clothes fitting better really is more down to fat loss rather than just the body dropping water weight.
Either way you need to stop eating sugar.

What about oil?

Re: So it turns out fat is fine.
This is a more balanced perspective
summary: The normal high carb western diet is bad, but theres a lot of individual variation when it comes to diet choice, and some people will do better on ultra lowcarb than others. The most important thing is to find something where you rarely feel hungry, and that can vary for different people.

It is also a problem for alcoholics and others who have effectively destroyed their liver. However, thank you for this post, I hadn't revisited the current wisdom on the problem. It doesn't help me much but still, you were right.
