I was going to create a thread for this.
But never mind.
It's a good step forward.

Step forward towards what? Should the US ban black people from owning guns? Statistically elderly people cause the most accidents on the roads, should they be banned from owning cars?

No and yes.
We know how much of terrorists kids are especially during the Halloween and Guy Fawke's months the uncivilised bunch they are.

Re: Fantastic
What possible use could a teenager have for eggs? It's not like they'll ever cook anything.
P.S. My house was egged last halloween.
P.P.S. They should just jack up the price of eggs on halloween.

It's pretty counter-productive as well.
"****s sake guys they wouldn't sell us any eggs, what will we do now?"
"How about we use those funny rock-shaped things over there?"
"You mean those rocks?"
"Jeez don't get all technical on me."
And so on and so forth.

You don't see any difference between the state saying 'no X can buy Y' and a private company saying it?

Obviously there is a difference. That's why I was saying it's a step forwards towards that. Surely you're aware of the "slippery slope" argument?

Re: Fantastic
It's clear that these good fellow citizens are just trying to stomp out anti-social behaviour. Anti-social behavior, like eating candy and throwing eggs, are destroying our beatifull society from within. Really, we should just ban teenagers, that would be much better.
Maybe we could/should lock them up from the 11 to 20, in "happy" learning camps?

Re: Fantastic
Clearly I'm not supporting this practice being made illegal, private companies should be free to serve who they wish. However it's not something I personally find desirable. Similarly to how I support your right to take drugs but if you asked me whether or not I'd recommend taking heroin I'd be of the opinion that's it not the best of ideas.

Re: Fantastic
Jonny, when bans of sale on fireworks to kids were made we didn't find kids shooting guns.
To suggest that banning sale of eggs to kids will result in them throwing potato's/Rocks at windows is ridiculous. If anything they'll just buy their eggs in advance next time and instead we'll have a couple of week old rotten eggs, however...
We all know fine well a paki corner shop will sell at least 20000 packages of eggs on the week of halloween, in fact I can imagine the whole Asian cornershop community are buying up egg stocks everywhere now.
YOU CAN COUNT ON IT.
That said I'm glad that corporations are deciding that they should be culpable for society's behaviour today and are at least acting on it, now we can blame those daft coloured people instead of blaming the youth or the police or the goverment or the corporations, god forbid we might ever blame the parents of these hoodlums, they vote!
p.s. It'd be nice if the police actually got round to actually prosecuting parents who allow their children who are UNDER THEIR CARE to go around vandalising like this. That would be the right solution but the goverment doesn't seem to be pushing any initiative forward to make them responsible other than curfew's and other ridiculous low cost/maintenance answers.

Re: Fantastic
I think the step-up between fireworks and a gun is a bit larger than the step-up between eggs/something else. Asda are not doing this because they decided they're responsible for the behaviour of teenagers at Halloween. They did it because they know it'll improve their image and boost sales.

You said Eggs vs rocks, I think Fireworks vs Guns is a very good comparison.
That all said, so what a supermarket has used something to improve their image, it's something that needs serious conversation anyway, if we aren't spending time whining about the government, we are spending our time whining about how inhumane and inconsiderate corporations are, the minute they do something that is humane and considerate, they are obviously just cashing in on the image.
There is no satisfying contradictory ****heads like you is there?

I'm not going to argue over such an obviously subjective matter. It should be noted that a) guns are far more difficult to get than rocks b) guns are slightly more dangerous than rocks and c) I picked a rock so I could do the rock-like substance joke (one could easily have potatoes or tomatoes instead).

Not really. Even ignoring the illegality / difficulty to get of guns, they're pretty expensive (compared to fireworks or rocks).

That was shit too, but I didn't feel it needed to be addressed.
If you care though, I think the point here is that this isn't "humane and considerate" it's just an ill-thought out gimmick. I don't really see the contradiction, companies are always doing things like this.
The policy itself while not particularly harmful if isolated to one or two chains still isn't particularly endearing. If, as has already been said, the policy was "Well most graffiti in this area is done by blacks, we'll stop selling marker pens to black people" then I'd imagine there would be some complaints on the matter. But it's OK to discriminate against teenagers, who as we all know, are senseless barbarians intent on the downfall of western civilisation.

I can't say that when I was a teenager and I lived with my parents that when I went out the first thing or the last thing on my mind was to pick up eggs before I head home unless I was asked to by my parents, in which case I'd do so resentfully.
As a teenager I wanted to be nice an selfish thanks very much, go out see my friends and play and what not.
Dunno about you but you sound like after you turned 5 your next birthday was 40 and you totally skipped on being a kid.

Round our place the shops wont sell eggs to kids to teenagers round this time of year anyway so they have resorted to throwing tomatos and fireworks instead.

Yes , those same twunts are the ones who throw eggs, but theres a world of difference. Its like saying "I used to kick people at Halloween, but they stopped letting people near me, so ill kick this wall instead as its the same thing, right?"

Re: Fantastic
I personally applaud Asda's move, now if only the government would get around to banning the stupid Americain Tradition of Trick and Treating in the UK where its pretty much become a valid reason for children to go around begging. The amount of kids who made rude comments or threw stuff at my house last year after giving them sweets rather than the cash they wanted. While they are at it they should also licence carol singers so that only those doing so for legitimate charities can go around doing it rather than once gain kids going around begging for cash for themselves

Having dogs prevents things like this. (They have to be scary dogs, though; no trick-or-treater is going to run away from a poodle.)

As I pointed out it was merely a joke. Personally I've never gone egging so I'm rather unsure of what I'd use if eggs were unavailable.

Agreed but first of all I'd rather see them enforce a parent accompanied only curfew, where kids that go out on the streets trick or treating have to be accompanied by a responsible adult, those that aren't get picked up in a police Van and dumped in a cell with an old drunk.
It'll give em the fright of their life, something we kinda aim for during halloween.

Someone's going to get hurt leaping off these cliffs, er, I mean, sliding down these slopes.
I'm not sure where wakey gets off calling trick or treat an American tradition though when it's clearly based on the Celtic festival of Samhain, where people left food on their doorsteps to placate evil spirits.
I have no problem with halloween in general, although I get annoyed with surly teenagers who can't be bothered to even wear some shred of a costume. They're somewhat evil though, so maybe it's OK.
