I'm thinking about becoming a Librarian
I know that most of you don't know me, unless you hang out in #php or #bluetubas, I'm not very active on gd, but what do you think about Librarians? Sounds like an interesting, and relaxing living. I finish my undergraduate degree in about a year, and I was thinking why not? Takes about 2 years of additional schooling. You can specialize, say for instance you can get the librarian degree and then get a law degree and then work in a law library. Or you can go into biology and work for the Center for Disease Control archival library. Anybody have any comments?

Actually from what I heard it takes more than 2 years of extra school. I thought you needed to master's degrees. One in Library Science and one in the subject of your choice. It's actually funny that you brought this up because I've been considering this as well. Of course I guess it depends on what kind of librarian you want to be. I've only recently looked into it so I'm not sure about all the different options. Anyways it seems like a very unharmful job which may only be a concern if your a guilt-ridden loser like myself.

The responsibilities of a clerical librarian would be yes. Whoever has to sit and stamp books and shhsssh people all day have a **** job, but say working for a university library and being involved in what goes on the shelves would be interesting. But I like telling people what to read so I guess it would appeal to me more than it would appeal to someone who actually has a life.

I can't imagine the amount of joy you get from telling people what books they should read. I'm on a verge of a descision now, and I just decided to give you a piece five-minute kicks.
Brecht, Machiavelli or Wilde?

I don't think it would be boring what so ever, all the tedious stuff is done by part time workers, like students. None of the librarians I've talked to have a second graduate degree, but some positions are only available if you have a specific degree. I think you can focus on an area in your librarian training.

depending on what your degree is, you dont even need to go for the deegree in being a librarian, it depends what kind of library job you are going for, the only thing is, to get above £20k in my dept, you need a first, it doesnt matter what in, and a lot of place ask for 2/3 years experience to take you above the scale 3 (i.e. in charge of a single library) level. If you have any specific questions, just ask, as i am an assistant librarian looking at my options to get higher up in local gov.

I worked in a university library for work experience a few years ago. From what i saw, it can actually be a very fun job, especially if you like books. You also get the added advantage of being around intelligent people all day, which is always nice.

I worked in a high school library for four months when I was in high school. I really enjoyed it. My two fellow high school students did not enjoy it. I did all the work and they sat there being bored. They were idiots. I love books. I also gave a recommendation to the librarian about fantasy books she should buy. I believe she appreciated the input.
The only university library I have been to is the University of Oklahoma library in Norman. I could spend months there reading the information on communications theory, but, unfortunately, I was only there for two months as a graduate student.

I need to write a literature essay in the near three weeks. Il Principe is one option. Then there's that Wilde's Dorian Grey thing and a Brecht's politics novel.
I'm heavily leaning on Il Principe at the moment. I might go for Wilde too.

Re: I'm thinking about becoming a Librarian
You need a DEGREE to become a librarian?!
All you do is stamp books, tell people off if the book is returned late, and get people to be quiet.
I knew the status of having a degree was falling, but I didn't think to such a low level.

Re: I'm thinking about becoming a Librarian
skiming over the front page of GD, my first thought was that this thread was called "I'm thinking of becoming a Lesbian". Then i looked inside and my second thought was "who the hell are these people that have posted replies?" My third and final thought was "what the hell has happened to the "Re: Thread" bit. Then i looked at the dates and posted this.
PS i agree with Tomkat, a degree to be a librarion? wtf?

Re: I'm thinking about becoming a Librarian
My wife's family is infested with librarians. Her father was a librarian (retired) for the state of Wisconsin and three of her sisters are librarians (two of them research librarians at universities). They're mostly civil service jobs which means the pay is fairly low and you have deal with a lot of abusive people all day; but on the plus side they probably can't fire you unless you kill somebody.

I thought that too until:
- Someone at my work decided not to bother with the security aspect of our job (ie actually checking the applications), got caught, got suspended and 3 months later is still waiting to hear what's gonna happen (sacking most likely)
and
- Some complete fags at my work thought that because they had their own little room they could bully the nice happy smiley older guy in there (riding him around like a horse was one of their "escapades"). They got suspended and i believe they will be getting sacked.
General incompetence is overlooked* in the Civil Service (i'd suspect at least at the lower levels).
Blatant disregard for "The Rules" is not.

It takes a graduate degree to be a librarian. The people stamping your books are not librarians, they are library clerks and make mininum wage. The librarians are the adminstrators who run libraries, organize the collection, increase the collection, help with research, etc. If at any point in your university education you've ever gone to the libary with a research project and asked help from an actual librarian, you would be impressed by how competent they are at finding relevant information.

Re: I'm thinking about becoming a Librarian
Hey friends,
I'm thinking of moving to Canada when I get the chance. This is mainly due to the establishment in the UK and the fact our water and food is polluted and society has shitted itself up.
I was also thinking of trying to become a journalist when I leave university. Obviously I'll have to do a lot of work in terms of getting the talent --I've got two years, it's possible!--so that I can get a job in a decent newspaper and not what ever shitty local paper there is around here.
LIbrarian seems ok. Lots of 'quiet' time. You could buy a PDA and then read various things while you're at work. You may also go insane with bordom.

Similarly, when I first saw it I thought he wanted to become a Liberian. Couldn't imagine why.
Would being a librarian give you internet acces so you could GD all day long?
Are you still thinking of becoming a librarian?
If so, what have you done toward that end?
