Re: Sony PSP
Get a decent laptop and you've thousands of better titles at your fingertips.
Laptop + GPRS / Wireless Access Points + WoW / SWG / AO = no more boring train trips.

Re: Sony PSP
Yeah but the laptop cost how many times more?
If the PSP is out at £180 then it is significantly cheaper than a *decent* lap top with those features plus a PSP is lighter/smaller not to mention, less technically intimidating to mr.joe average and his 3 kids.
Not saying either is better but they are two different beasts really.

Re: Sony PSP
All of the above is true, but I'd expect most people around here would rather have a laptop and a WoW or SWG subscription and play decent games than a small non upgradeable PSP with games which are obviously going to be limited by the technology.

Re: Sony PSP
I plan to get one when they come out, though I may wait until any second release of them since there're the odd annoyances with the current incarnation (apparently).
And if it's a choice between a £1400 laptop that's a couple kilos in weight or a £200 handheld that's a few ounces, I know which I'd rather be playing with on the train or bus.

They came up as £1400 when I was pricing 'nice' ones with pretty Radeons in, though the point still stands.
Also, I'm pretty sure that if I had enough money to be playing SWG or WoW over GPRS I could just as easily buy both the PSP and a lappy.

Re: Sony PSP
The PSP looks far superior to the DS in terms of games and technology. Nintendo have already started making the real sequel to the GBA.
edit: Although the DS already has homebrew (sort of)

Re: Sony PSP
Tbh, the ds is far better than the psp. I've had my ds for a while now and it doesn't get old. Ever. Plus with games like warioware and a pricetag of £80 cheaper than the psp its far better.

Re: Sony PSP
my mate has got a PSP, imported from Japan, and i must say its very nice. It looks a lot better than the DS.
The only problem i have with the PSP is its overpriced. I'd much rather have a DS because its better value for money. I wonder how much the games will cost for them both!

My mate got a DS last Friday, and I played Wario Ware and its very addictive. Also grachics on Metroid and Super Mario are like 10x better than GBA.

Re: Sony PSP
I have played on a PSP and own a DS. Seriosly, just get a DS. While the screen quality of the PSP is better than the DS, there is no innovation. The PSP is simply that. A Playstation Portable. It's just more of the same, which is fine and dandy if all you want to do is replay all the PS2 games that you already own. But, if you want something new, something that has never been done before in a handheld then you want Nintendos wonder machine. Once you've played on something like Wario Ware Touched! or Project Rub, then you will know exactly what i mean

Re: Sony PSP
No, it was a PS with a DVD player that could stand up.
I've played DS and PSP. Go for the DS. The PSP might look better, but it dosn't compare game wise. I got myself a DS and I havn't put it down. On the other hand, a mate of mine imported a PSP and he's hardly touched it - he said something about buying a DS at the weekend. But thats only because he's got more money than he knows what to do with

Re: Sony PSP
Someone should have made a poll for this.
DS is far superior in quality of games and innovation than PSP. Plus DS has a decent battery power. PSP playing Ridge Racer and the power is 4hrs or sumthing rubbish like that. Wherehas DS is 12 i think.

So it's the whole Nintendo vs. Sony thing again, just like PS2 versus GC.
Sony has better 'functions' but Nintendo is simply more fun?

I think Phang loves his Playstation.
I'll probably get a DS soon, can't really complain for £100 and what looks like a decent line up of games. That is unless someone can give me a good reason to wait for a PSP and pay an extra £80.

The line up of games isn't too great on the DS for the next 6 months. What you see is what you get until Q3 or Q4.

Are you serious?
Next Friday alone we have :
Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Animal Crossing DS, Advance Wars DS, and Sonic DS.
Then in the few months after that we have:
Yoshi: Touch & Go, and Bomberman.
What more could you want?

i was summarising.
the touchscreen is a nice idea, but it doesn't mask the fact that the PSP is more versatile, more powerful, and generally a better piece of kit. The DS may be 'innovative', sure. But innovative doesn't equate to better. To use a slightly unfair analogy, if someone was tired of eating spag bol every night, you wouldn't suggest they try eating a Slinky.
Ridge Racers looks amazing. The GT4 Mobile trailer is ...stunning, there's no other word for it; it's every bit as smooth and detailed and generally gorgeous as anything I'd expect on the PS2.
I don't have some bizarre hatred of Nintendo. Excluding the SP i own all four varieties of Game Boy, because they're all nice pieces of kit (even if the screens on the GBC and GBA are shoddy as all hell) and Nintendo are a very good producer of games. It's just that there are always less of them. The current line-up for the DS consists entirely of solid to great games, but you wouldn't need your toes to count them. The Sony consoles have had far and away more games, and more good games, and that wins it. Mario Kart may be great, Warioware may be great, MP:H may be pretty good, but the PSP will be pissing similar quantities of excellent games out of the sky.
Oh, and as for the battery life? You can buy a spare battery. A design for a handheld console that causes pulled muscles in the hand? Harder to fix.

6 games from the first year of a console isn't a particularly good lineup.
If I was buying one of them, I'd still buy the DS, but its game support is by far its weakest part.

Re: Sony PSP
If it's numbers of games we're talking, I was always dissapointed by the PlayStation. The N64/traditional Nintendo numbers were screaming with good games, and I'm not denying that the playstation didn't have as many. In fact, I'd put it as equal for the amount of "must have"/"brilliant" games. It's just that the PS was always diluted with a shed load of shit games, which always caught the eye of those who don't know much about videogames.
It's all about ratio. Nintendo = one out of every 10 games is a classic. PS = 1 out of every 50. It's pointless having the excess, imo.

Yes, but the Sony consoles with far less restrictive licensing have a catalogue 15-20 times the size. The great thing about the Sony consoles is that anyone who can get a publisher can put out a game, and while this will be slightly hindered by the move to UMD, i doubt it will be severe.
And the best way to deal with shit games is not to buy them. But even then, some shit games might be quite fun! (case in point: Chris Kamara's Street Soccer, the last PS1 game i ever bought.)

Re: Sony PSP
Of course, the best way to deal with this is to realise that there isn't some law about only having one.
However, one last point on the DS:
It's different, significantly so from everything else. I can already play PS2 games on my (get this!) PS2. I can't play anything like the DS games on any system.

Re: Sony PSP
it's portable, has enormous processor power and will almost certainly have near-unrestricted licensing as well.
and the touch-screen is a fun distraction, but outside of, well, warioware it doesn't appear that it would be missed much. furthermore, using it HURTS. how is this unimportant?
