If you restrict this to times when there was a reasonable potential for education, and the possibility of the existance of science (say, the Greeks onwards) then this is not true, except in its most literal case in which case the burden of proof is impossible to overcome, and thus that case is irrelevent.

Well, Plato and Aristotle both believed in a spherical earth, but I dunno if the Catholic church reverted to a flat-earth story when they took control. Here is an interesting article that says they didnt though.

I shall also jump on your corpse within this thread, which educated men? The curve of the earth was well known to sailors (their ships dissapeared below the horizon) and columbus set sail knowing the earth was round.

I don't believe they did - for example, Galileo's problems arose more from his breaking of a promise to the pope and his soapboxing heliocentrism than anything else. I don't know if the move towards empirical rather than abstract "science" helped this divide on a bit as well.

I was actually discussing this fine bit of disinformation the other week with my Physics supervisor, and he's a learned man with a bushy moustache so he's probably to be believed.

Also don't forget that the Greeks actually had a pretty good stab at the radius of the Earth.

I'm sure the Russian and Chinese military, in order to avoid a conflict with the reputable Chico sherrif's department, have probably made arrangements to detonate any nuclear device above the city, avoiding the possibility of running into trouble by breaking the city's laws.
