The French (again)
Quote:
Chirac jokes about British food
The three leaders seemed to enjoy themselves in Kaliningrad
French President Jacques Chirac is reported to have cracked jokes about British food at a meeting with the German and Russian leaders.
French newspaper Liberation says Gerhard Schroeder and Vladimir Putin laughed and joined in the banter.
"One cannot trust people whose cuisine is so bad," it quotes Mr Chirac as saying, within earshot of reporters.
A French government spokesman declined to comment on the report, which comes days before the G8 summit in Scotland.
One cannot trust people whose cuisine is so bad
Jacques Chirac
The three men met on Sunday for celebrations to mark the 750th anniversary of the founding of Kaliningrad, formerly known as Koenigsberg, an exclave of Russia surrounded by Poland and Lithuania.
"The only thing they (the English) have ever done for European agriculture is mad cow disease," Mr Chirac said, according to the newspaper's report.
"After Finland, it is the country with the worst food."
Problems with Nato
Mr Chirac is also reported to have reminisced about an occasion when Lord George Robertson, the former Secretary General of Nato, had made him try a Scottish dish.
"That is where our difficulties with Nato come from," he said.
The Taste of Scotland is always to be enjoyed at the Gleneagles Hotel
Gleneagles Hotel website
The comments come as France and the UK compete to hold the Olympic games in 2012, and are at loggerheads over the EU budget.
On Wednesday Mr Chirac will be flying to Gleneagles for a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth II to open the G8 summit.
The menu has not been published, but most of the food, provided by the Gleneagles hotel, will be locally sourced.
"The Taste of Scotland is always to be enjoyed at the Gleneagles Hotel, from morning kippers or a fresh egg from a nearby farmhouse; scones and cream or Dundee cake for afternoon tea in The Bar to Angus beef, Scottish salmon, venison or Highland grouse for dinner," the hotel's website says.
It adds that the hotel's kitchens "benefit from the finest, freshest produce available from Scotland's larder, and from specialist suppliers around the world".
Hamburgers OK
US President George W Bush said in an interview with the Times newspaper that he would not eat haggis at the summit, or wear a kilt.
Liberation says Mr Putin tried to egg Mr Chirac on at the Kaliningrad meeting, asking him what he thought of hamburgers.
Mr Chirac replied that hamburgers were far preferable to British food.
In an interview with Time magazine two years ago, he said he had been a fan of America since spending a summer at Harvard University in 1953, and that he loved "junk food".
France came close to being fined in 2002, for refusing to lift a ban on British beef, in the wake of the BSE crisis.
The European Union issued a worldwide ban on British beef exports in 1996, but lifted it in 1999.

it'S like sunday8pm, but without acknowledging the BBC. I'd report the post for plagarism but well, you're JammyJim.
anyways, I don't know what Schroeder thinks he is laughing about, German food is bloody awful, and as for Putin well I suppose he doesn't know what food tastes like since he probably washes it all down with antifreeze anyway

who gives a shit?
if you ask me we should just rise above his petty namecalling. We are British after all. All that is required is that we look upon Chiraq with complete disdain until he crawls into a hole and dies. easy.

British food is crap, whats the problem?
For god sake, we constantly vote "Fish and chips" as the nations favourite meal. The most bland, fatty, waste of time food there ever has been

You have to admit that British cuisine is notably bland. The best food that brittan has coined is haggis, imho.

Re: The French (again)
Blair should have laughed it off. It'd be the only wise thing to put, with a little bit of smugness in his laugher.
In his head he'd be saying to himself: 'Our food is crap, but at least we can defend outself and not get invaided, twice, and have to get bailed out by a country we despise.' Obviously he wouldn't say it else i'd make him look like a child as well.

Re: The French (again)
Aren't a good proportion of the "world's best restaurants" in Britain?
Anyway, I like "English" food. If we're defining that as traditional-esque foods like Roast Beef, fish and chips, stews, hot-pot, shepherds pie, pie and mash, black pudding, etc, etc. I'm not sure how many of these things are actually English though.

I like French cuisine, I prefer Spanish though. British cuisine can be ok, but a lot of it is pretty bad in comparison.
The thing is, it just makes the French look petty constantly making wise-cracks. I had to endure plenty of them in France. As long as you don't get caught up in it you take the moral higher ground, which is were it's all at these days.

You kidding me? They have some of the most richest tasting food in the world! Just about every meal & desert they have is overloaded with flavour.
However, they are rated as the worst coffee makers in the world.

I had fish and chips once at an Irish pub in Germany. Does that qualify me to judge English food?

Bangers & Mash, Generally any sort of roast meat & vegetables served with Yorkshire pudding, Bubble and Squeak. They're also big into bakery, like scones & sweet buns etc.

see this is the root of the 'britain has bad food' myth.
France is judged by the delicate sauces and cordon bleu schools of development which was eaten exclusively by the very rich. ie. when we think of french food we think of the menu's of the palaces.
England is judged on the peasent food of the industrial north during the poverty and depredation of the groeth of industry.
A true comparison; indeed a true critique of english food would assess the british dishes which were served to our upper classes. The stapple diet of the country houses which (with modern twists) is now what one sees prolifically in restaurants such as the fat duck or at claridges.
France is basically saying "compared to your dock worker our king had much better food"
Mind you low tactics and dirty play are what we've come to expect from the French

I've visited (South) France on a very regular base for about two years, I've had all kinds of different food there but I have to say that it is indeed bland, it all tend to taste the same. Pretty boring if you ask me. Frogs are surprisingly good though and ofcourse their cheese is fabulous and I like their olives and liver pates.

it's one of those desserts the British cook in order to confuse and upset foreigners. we do the same with mice pies too, which contains the humerously named "mincemeat" which has absolutely no meat in it. I like making those when vegetarians come round to see their horror when I name the main ingredient. I'm always good enough to tell them it just consists of fruit and lots of sherry afterwards.

Then clearly you've never eaten a decent roast chicken. It's like expecting a Dutch meal to taste the same over here - it won't.

with 'taste' in this context i didn't mean what chicken itself tastes like, but that food you can buy at a cafetaria shouldn't be part of a classy dinner to begin with.
chicken and caviar is no combination. in fact all seafood can't be mixed with meat. but chicken (the cheapest meat) after caviar (exclusive, expensive) in one meal is probably the worst combination i've ever heard of.

Re: The French (again)
I have never been to a 'cafateria' where you can buy roast chicken with all the trimmings.
And are you seriously suggesting that you can't have a fish starter and a poultry main. Don't be retarded KoeN.
