Recognised is probably the wrong word to use, protected is better. The term lawyer or doctor is protected to those people who are lawyers or doctors. In britain you can get 'sky box engineers' etc, people who are essentially just technicians doing maintainance but that are given the prefix engineer to make them feel better and give an aura of profesionalism to the customer. A lab technician can't call themselves a doctor, a legal researcher or secretary can't call themselves a lawyer but anyone can start bashing a bit of metal and declare 'ay up lad, um an engineer now'

In the same way, most medical doctors don't have doctorates. No-one complains that they aren't real doctors. People just understand that there are different types of engineers, in the same way that the lab tech could say he is "a scientist".

I wouldn't have a problem with different types of engineers, mechanical electrical etcetc, those academic doctors did phds/dphils but don't allude to any medical training, i don't understand the tech-'scientist' point, as it just backs what im saying, they won't call themselves doctors

Re: Don`t do science.
If we're going to play this game fine,
en·gi·neer P Pronunciation Key (nj-nîr)
n.
One who is trained or professionally engaged in a branch of engineering.
One who operates an engine.
One who skillfully or shrewdly manages an enterprise.
engineer
n 1: a person who uses scientific knowledge to solve practical problems [syn: applied scientist, technologist]2: the operator of a railway locomotive [syn: locomotive engineer, railroad engineer, engine driver] v 1: design as an engineer; "He engineered the water supply project" 2: plan and direct (a complex undertaking); "he masterminded the robbery" [syn: mastermind, direct, organize, organise, orchestrate]
tech·ni·cian P Pronunciation Key (tk-nshn)
n.
An expert in a technique, as:
One whose occupation requires training in a specific technical process: an electronics technician; an automotive technician.
One who is known for skill in an intellectual or artistic technique.
an engineer could design you that sky box then move onto a completely different project and use the skills and knowledge he has as an applied scientist/technologist (never heard those terms before but i think they sound sexy) to solve the problems on that project. A sky box technician would say, well my thingyimebob says this bit is broken...ill replace it, you want me to build a what now??!!?
A mechanic is a mechanic, he repares cars, he isn't the mechanical engineer who brought it into being.

i'd argue that all medical doctors do have doctorates, they just aren't doctors of philosophy.
same with lawyers.

Re: Don`t do science.
i'm an engineer
The reputation is much higher than nerds. If you compare the amount of guys with girlfriends on an engineering course it would be much much higher than that of a computer science course.
Maybe your reputation is lower than that of a nerd but the general idea of an engineer is of a nice intelligent bloke who drinks a lot.

Slashing does n`t work. You have to stab into your wrists; so I am reliably informed.

I just got a patent payment today so I heartily disagree.
I propose changing the title of the thread to:
don't do science if you are crap at it.
