In reality it's no different to the news reporting what police have recovered from premises after a burglary/drugs/murder raid and looking at the wording of the statement, it looks as if it's been carefully worded to avoid contempt of court.

that is a fair point but what about the impression given to the public. 'ooh, they found bomb-making equipment and martyrdom tapes, they must be guilty.' this disappears for a year and no-one cares, history has found them guilty.
Like when they shot the Brazilian guy a lot of people still believe he was wearing a big jacket and ran from the police (niether of which are true), which is worrying.
Once comments like this are put into the public arena it's impossible to completely erase their effects. Like men who are wrongly accused of rape (like Craig Charles of Red Dwarf fame, he was arrested for apparantly smoking crack and every report mentions his rape case in which he was found innocent. Why bring it up?) it hangs over them for years, where there's smoke, there's fire and all that...
