Things could have been worse; microwaved in fact.

Re: oh dear
Currys and PC world are part of the same company (Dixon's Stores Group) and I have had a world of trouble with PCs and peripherals from those swines despite taking out their 'Coverplans'.
I took out an extended warranty on the first PC I bought about 10 years ago (£800 for 800mhz 128MB) , I got it from Dixon's and as soon as I had it set up I knew something wasn't quite right because the screen was really dark. I went back into Dixon's and explained my problem to the sales guy and he said you can buy a book to sort that problem out and that I should turn my monitor brightness up full and adjust the graphic card settings.
I did this and managed to get an almost viewable picture on my monitor but I still wasn't happy and after all I did have my 'coverplan' so I went back in to explain my problem and they told me it was a software problem and the 'cover plan' does not cover these so I had to make do. A couple of years ago I bought a new base unit from Time (£1k for 2.6G 1024MB DDR) and tried it with the monitor from my old computer and it turns out it was the monitor that was at fault all along.
More recently (about 5 months ago) my GF bought a Packard Bell from PC World with digital camera, printer etc. and was sold the coverplan (even though she phoned me while she was in the shop and I said don't bother with it), the camera no longer works which PC World seems to think isn't their problem and one of the front USB ports has been accidentally damaged (kids!) and they said this is an aesthetic issue and they can't do anything about it despite telling her she is covered for accidental damage on the insurance when they sold it to her.
Hope you have more luck then us roadrunner!

Re: oh dear
I had an advent from PCworld once.
It came with a graphics card that was basically imcompatible with the motherboard......(it was built like this)...
After many problems i sent it back and was called a liar when i said it came with the computer.
I ended up having to hunt down the fecking box which was under a load of crap in the garage to prove to them that the pc had come supplied with a graphics card that was incompatible.
(i think they were somewhat suspicous as id been through 4 previous pcs with them in the space of a week - 1 wouldnt turn on at all. 1 had a hdd failure within 5 minutes, anothers memory was fecked, another ones cd drive was busted)
it was just a long run of bad luck and shitty worksmanship back in dem good old days...
seriously dude you need to build your own. its not hard and if anything does go boom you only have yourself to blame...!

Mine was also an Advent, must have been a regalar thing for them. The chances of a PC I would build going boom are remote because it probably wouldn't start up in the first place!
I'm still using the PC I got from Time, it runs the programs/games I want it to and the only trouble I have is the noise it makes every so often (sounds like a washing machine on spin) and the odd boot failure but if I kick/shake it it works again (loose connection somewhere?).

Re: oh dear
mine is a phillips, and really i should just have researched the model more, as apparently overheating is a fairly common problem with it, when i get it back i suspect i shall be cracking it open and putting a beefier fan in

Pretty much. Alienware laptops (for example) cost about as much as a similarly specced laptop and desktop from another company, may use some extremely poorly chosen or poorly made parts (for example, on earlier models of the Area-51 laptop the heat being output by the processor* managed to damage the case, searing off the paint) and have utterly retarded combinations of components that give less performance than other components at higher prices.
*Alienware laptops use desktop processors, and, until extremely recently, didn't even use AMD chips. There's a reason that laptop-specific processors exist. There's a reason that Intel has been a laughing stock in the gaming community for the past few years. There's a reason why noone with sense buys an alienware.

i'm told that there's a mobile variant of the amd64 about nowadays. any idea if it's worth having over the 'standard' desktop version that i've got in my laptop (which still has power saving etc etc)?

With TV episodes / warez / MP3s they'll just leech whatever stuff you have.

There's been one for years. I've got one in a laptop from 2004.
They're just more efficient than desktop A64s, even with C&Q.
