Spots
I usually have a clear complexion but during termtime the occassional rash of spots erupts on my face.
I figure this might be due to the student lifestyle. So this term I have been trying to be particularly healthy. I had duck stir-fry for dinner, an early night, got up at 6am for a jog, All-Bran for breakfast, pasta with cabbage and cheese for lunch, etc. And yet I still look like I've spent a year inside a nuclear reactor core. This is particularly a problem when shaving.
Suggestions please. Could this be environmental factors? An allergy? Should I see a doctor or would that be overly vain?

Re: Spots
I've been getting a really bad rash when shaving, I don't know what it is. I think it might be something to do with the cold, but I don't know.
Try shaving in the shower, dude. I've started doing it. It works really well - just don't do any tricky bits that you'd need a mirror for, wait until you're out of the shower.

Re: Spots
So it might be the shaving is the problem? I do shave far more often during term. I'll try shaving in the shower tomorrow.

Re: Spots
There's really no point going down the GP route unless you have chronic acne. If you need it there are various drugs that work very well but may make you 'unstable', one of which is Roacutane.
Try small changes like mentioned above: reducing stress, more fresh air, better diet. If that doesn't work start at the lower end of the market (oxy stuff, clearisil, neutrogena) and work your way up (specialist soaps, tea tree oil etc).

In my experience most things dont work. Diet has no effect at all according to the docs i saw. I was on the wonder drug Roacutane that was supposed to 'cure' 99.9% of people for 6 months. It had no real effect so i was taken off it and a few years later it was announced lots of people who were on it had topped themselves.

Re: Spots
a couple of things that might help, but it depends on where your getting the spots really
if you are getting them where you shave, then yeah, its probably shaving rash, get yourself some nice new blades, some nice shave gel (king of shaves anti bacterial works well, and will help cut down on spots) and some moisturiser for afterwards. If you are still getting bad shaving rash, think about getting a specialist product like ingrow-go, as a lot of shaving rash is down to ingrowing hairs on your neck (ew)
if you are getting the spots more on your forehead and temples, its more likely to be stress, which, quite frankly, there isnt a lot you can do about. Use a mild face wash, again anti bacterial dont be tempted by a harsh face wash, it wont help a lot in this situation and will just make your skin look worse

Re: Spots
For me, shaving normally exacerbates the problem but doesn't create any spots of its own. I've been on a broad-spectrum antibiotic for a couple of years now called Oxytetracycline, available from your GP and prescribed if you start to scar as I was. No discernible side-effects, though it took a couple of months for it to actually kick in.

Re: Spots
In my case the methods i said above didn't work, i was lucky though and Roacutane worked for me without me topping myself. Oxytetracycline didn't work for me. It all depends on the individual. A friend of mine has a month left to go on his Roacutane prescription after which they wont prescribe him anymore. Shame really as it's opnly just started to have a noticeable effect.
Some people's acne does clear up after simple changes like diet though so it's always worth a try.

Re: Spots
I was on Roacutane for about 6 months and it was bloody amazing - they won't prescribe it to you unless they've tried everything else though (loads of antibiotics and topical treatments etc... that generally don't work as well). A load of people apparently killed themselves cos of Roacutane, but the only side effect I had was really dry skin (especially my lips).
If you think the problem is because of shaving try buying a shaving gel/foam with aloe vera in, or one that is kind to your skin anyway.

Nonsense. You can get creams that help clear up even minor acne/spots, with no significant side-effects (erythromycin based products normally). You're paying for the health service whether you use it or not, so you might as well take advantage of it.

Re: Spots
You are all really spotty
Also, might hurt a little, but use an exfoliatoing facial wash, as this will get rid of dead skin and such like that block your pores and form spots. The antibacterial shaving cream rr suggested sounds good as well because spots are basically bacterial welts, so the less bacteria the better. Clearisil pads maybe too, just to clean your face from all the grime during the day before you go to bed will help too.

Even more interesting, is if u assume it takes about 10 minutes to read a thread and post a reply to it, someone would have to post continuously on the boards for 173 days without sleep, if they wanted to get the same post count as KaneED.
Allow them some sleep - and thats a year of doing nothing but posting on these boards. Insane.

Yeah, but KaneEd's only posted about 2,000 times. He used the admin tools to edit his post count, in one of the most disturbingly pathetic moves ever seen on GD.

Re: Spots
Always make sure you shave after your shower, not before or during, make sure you use a sharp blade, a decent razor (one of the mach3's is a safe bet) & plenty of foam rather than gel. if you can apply with a brush this helps too as it makes the hairs stand up and easier to cut. always make sure you go with the grain, even if this doesnt mean downstrokes (most people will tell you to always shave down) as hairs dont all grow the same way. Follow this with a high quiality clenser, exfoliator (helps stop ingrowning hairs) , toner and then moisturiser. You should clense/tone/moisturise twice daily , once in morning, even if you dont shave, and once at night before bed (even if you stumble in drunk at 4am - especially then infact). id recommend
http://www.lizearle.com/lizearle/pro...3169&groupid=1 as a clenser & exfoliator http://www.lizearle.com/lizearle/pro...3169&groupid=4 as a toner and http://www.nivea.co.uk/frameset.php?...ro.php%3Fpid=3 as a moisturiser, the key to not getting shaving rash is in the moisturisor, nivea do do a whole range for men if the liz earle stuff is too girly for you, it is the best out there though.

Re: Spots
Get some free King of Shaves stuff from here. (mine arrived today - wahoo!)
It gives loads of good advice as well, including the likes that has been mentioned - shave in or after a shower, don't shave straight away, stuff like that. And well, free samples are always good.

When I was about 16 or so I used to get a few spots if I was living an abnormal lifestyle. However if I got enough fresh fruit and vegetables and sleep I was fine within a few days. Therefore it is related to diet!

Re: Spots
i find that if you wash your face it helps to prevent spots. I use bic disposables and some cheap ass shaving foam from asda, works fine for me, i shave quite regurlarly depending on who i meet, and if spots come along it happens, ure at uni, they will go away, although diet plays a part of it, more fatty carbohydrate foods u eat more spots u get i think.

Spots form due to a variaty of reasons, stress being the most common.
Either goto your GP or go, like I did, to your local Chinese medicine place and get shit loads of pills for a few months and never see the aforementioned spots again.
