I'd recommend one of my fav games that is: No One Lives Forever.
Btw: It's a lot better then than the nolf2, and it shouldn't be to hard to find it cheap somewhere.

Hmm... well i've been playing Civ2 for years so I wanted a change. And it's not as if I bought it!
And when I played alpha centauri a few years ago i thought it was pants...

I don't see what there is to dislike about Alpha Centauri if you're a Civ 2 fan.
It's basically a more polished, extended version of Civ 2 based in a futuristic / alien setting.
I'd need to agree with MrL, it's my favourite of the Civ games.

I have played Civ 2 an unhealthy amount, but I didn't like Alpha Centauri much, mainly because of the 'futuristic/alien setting', which just isn't as interesting as the Civ premise.

Or 'Technolgogy' if you're an Alien Crossfire player.

Alpha Centauri is mostly pants because the unit customisation system sucks. At least, I haven't been able to find a way to easily upgrade all units and make the old designs obsolete, rather than doing them all by hand.

The only problem is the interface with the workshop, which on occasion leaves something to be desired.
Oh, and I haven't been able to find a way to easily upgrade to railroad and farms, rather than doing it all by hand.

At least moving around engineers and telling them where to construct farms and railroads is easy and not particularly annoying.
The workshop interface is fairly obtuse - you have to take units out of production, make them obsolete, then actually delete their designs, they move around in that big bar at the bottom whenever you change their status (which you can only scroll through slowly), and I'm still not entirely sure at what point you can and cannot use the 'Upgrade all current units' button.
And if you happen to get a new thing a few turns later, you have to do it all over for your 10 different units. The game itself isn't too bad, but whomever designed that workshop thing should receive the traditional GD punishment of being taken out and shot in the face.

You don't have to take them out of production, when you use the 'upgrade' button it does it automatically. Similarly with 'Upgrade all current units'; when there's a better one, you press the 'upgrade' button on the design screen of the existing one, and you can pay to make them all better.
The bar is rubbish though.

I thought Civ2 was as polished a game as you can get...
Civ 3 introduced some nice new concepts but will never be as good.
Alpha centauri never appealed to me...

Civ 2 was, for what it is, the best it can be. It's just lacking things like automation, and doesn't have the variation of Alpha (no unique civ stuff, fewer wonders, fewer unit types, that kind of thang)
