Which *nix Desktop/Distro?

Hi folks,

I've just been given a PIII-450, 8gb HD and 128mb ram.

For a while I've meant to get round to having a *nix desktop again (over 3 years since I ran Gnome on RH6.?)

I no longer have a fast .net connection at home, but can download lots at work.

So anyway - what would ppl recommend as the ideal distro for the above hardware (I may buy more ram eventually)? I was thinking of the Ximian Gnome desktop, but apparently it requires quite a lot of resources now.

I (just about) manage a FreeBSD web/db server arm, so while ease-of-use is a plus, I'm not totally against fiddling with configs and stuff!

EDIT: I plan to use it for PHP/MySQL and also learning Python and Postgres and chatting ofc

Any suggestions welcome!

M.

Debian or Gentoo are my current favorites. Gentoo likes to compile everything so with a 400odd MHz machine i would say debian.

Slackware is what I would choose, but I'd recommend debian or gentoo if you want funky package management.

I've never understood the point of Sawmill, Fluxbox, et al.

Urely once you've got KDE/Gnome installed, that's the end of the story?

I'm torn between Gentoo and FreeBSD in terms of the distro now, although Ximian isn't supported.

Because things like fluxbox are an alternative to the feature heavy gnome/kde.

Gentoo... and tbh... if I can run Gentoo on a P166, compiling everything, you sure can do it on a PIII-450

Besides... what would be better for learning python than a distro based on tools written in python..

Ah, I thought these were WM's built on TOP of Gnome/KDE in the way Ximian is kinda another layer(ish) to Gnome.

I'd recommend running Slackware 8.1, cause that's my favorite distro atm. If your going to install Slackware 8.1, then i recommend you to try Enlightenment. Atleast it seems to work fine on the pc's we have at school, and they have almos the same specs as yours(except for 128 MB more ram).

Why Slackware 8.1 and not 9.0?

I avoid KDE/Gnome like the plague, reminds me too much of microsoft.

Slackware with fvwm2 is my current preference.
