Telephone buffs needed.
In a rage of complete and utter insanity I have acquired a Sony Ericsson W850i. Now to some of you this seems a good phone, but not to me, I kinda hate the thing and after 3 days I am fed up with it. And since I've already used it, Vodafone won't take it back and let me get a nice Nokia. My bad.
However I now want to sell it and I have some nice offers, but I still have to remove the simlock from it, you guys have any idea how I can do this. I have the 'cruiser'-cable and all that, but I just want to remove the simlock. (or SP-lock as it officially is called)
Thanks,
Theam

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
The thing that allows you to use other network sims with the phone? I think you either call up the company who do it for you for like £50 (last time I checked) or get it done illegally for £5-10. Not sure where you live and where you can get it done, but in most computer markets in London you can get it done

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
Your best bet would be to go to a computer market or some such place and see if anyone there can "unlock" (thats what they call it iirc) it, its fairly common and requires a fairly simple machine iirc.

Not half as bad as Motorola.
Getting the phone unlocked by a dodgy market guy voids your warranty. I believe if you get it done by the operator the phone still keeps its warranty.
Try a company called wotanserver. They specialise in unlocking/debranding Sony Ericsson phones.

Its illegal to unblock a blocked phone.
What I mean by this is that if a phone is stolen the network block it, rendering the phone useless. If you got that unblocked that is illegal (it's very difficult to get it done these days, mobile phones are so hot they arent worth nicking)
To unblock a phone (normally orange in the UK) to be used on another network, that is perfectly legal. No problem at all and will cost a tenner. You could probably download some software by some cables and do it yourself, unfortunately I have no idea how. Sorry.

Its not only Orange, it's most networks, but they charge you an obscene amount of money so I thought the cheap guys did it illegally or something. Not sure if you can download software for it nowadays, but I'm guessing you should be able to if you look hard enough.

I am looking rather hard but I can only find paid software and if it does unlock the w850i it flashes it with some kind of dodgy firmware .....

*Im not 100% on T-Mobile and O2, but I am on Vodafone.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
Going back to what Mistwraith said about a 14 day returns policy. Surely you guys have something similar in Dutchyland.
Did the sales man say you couldn't return it? Make up a fault E.g. it freezes all the time, I have had enough I want to change back to Nokia.
Aslong as you havent damaged it in anyway they can hardly say NO.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
The first seven days you get it 'on sight' which means that you can use it but not make any costs with it. Once that is done, you 'accept' the phone and it is irreturnable.
What you say about making up a fault sounds intresting at first. But don't you think they will want you to specifically do the action in their shop before retaking it which causes the error? Furthermore, just saying 'it constantly freezes, it looks like something is wrong' will probably give me another w850i which is not what I want.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
I unlocked several of my phones over the internet by googling for the make/model of the phone and unlock codes. It usually works by having to input a load of info about the phone (the imie number or some such and some other info) then either paying by calling a premium rate number (usually works out at about £3.50) or using your credit cards. Never had any problems doing it that way.

I remember in the past they were always blocked, but my last O2 phone was unblocked, so I'm guessing they stopped blocking them.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
the only UK phones i have ever found unblocked were o2 ones, but their newer ones appear to be lockedd to them now.
you USED to be able to just 'soft' unlock them with a code, to get this you would need your IMEI, make model number and network provider, BUT, to the best of my knowledge most manufacturers are now making it impossible to soft unlock their phones, meaning they have to be hard unlocked, generally using a cable to a PC and whatever the relevant software is

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
You can go to the black markets in Vleuten or Bunnik
Alternatively there is a market on Vreeburg every saturday where they also unlock phones
It costs about 5 a 10 euro's depending on how shady you look

Most phone contracts are minimum 12-18 months, so if it's a new contract then he can't just cancel it without paying the line rental each month until the minimum length is over.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
yup basically the company that sells you the phone locks it to their network and if u wish to keep the warranty u have to get it unlocked by them, they charge an extortionate amount to do this so u dont bother and continue to use them and therefore their company for your calls .
i get a guy in my local market to unlock mine (orange) once i have finished using that phone .. so anyone can use it.. he sticks a cable in which is connected to a small box that unlocks it ..
this costs £10.
my 1st google found this site ..

Odd, I know of at least several places in Rotterdam where you can have it done, and I'd imagine it wouldn't be much harder to find the same places in either Amsterdam or Utrecht. There's bound to be a bunch of those small Turkish phone shops around who can do it.

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
It's Twente Leshy, half our population still comes out of the house when a car drives by.
Also, I just sold it with the simlock on it, I just said 'Well, you can have it with the simlock on it for 20 EU less, okay?' ... and it was a deal, thanks for all the help by the way.
I have also 'surfed the web' a bit for more info on vodafone and other so called service providers about provider locks et cetera. I wonder who came up with the name 'service providers', this seems like some sort of maffia to me. They have become more userfriendly in the last years, but still, those long contract terms, their total reluctance to do anything bar the bitter bitter minimum of upholding their part of the contract, while in the mean time everyone, and I mean everyone, who uses his or her phone a bit has the justified feeling that everytime the phonebills is in the mail they are getting ****ed sideways ....

Re: Telephone buffs needed.
I have worked for t-mobile since october and it is shocking for some of the calls I have to put up with regarding subsidy pins.
Subsidy PINs are a big Con... for example T-Mobile charge £15 for a subsidy pin take 28 working days and there is no garantee that it will work (no refund whatsoever). whislt if you take it down to an Independant trader they will do this for £5-10 within 15 mins and if they dont do the job you dont pay them.
Unforunately it isnt "procedure" for me to recommend the later option.
edit- The majority of Carphone warehouse phones are unlocked

Your right and furball is wrong. You do have a trial period e.g. 14 Day money back. Where you can return the phone (As long as it isn't damaged) and all you pay for is X days line rental and any additional charges you may have built up.

I unlocked an Ericsson phone at a Vodaphone shop an she made it clear to me that even there the warranty was going do be voided.
I would suggest a small amount of polish and a lint free cloth.
