Actually, there is a large difference between dissent and opportunism. The criticism of the Democrats is that they back or criticise based on the most recent polls and not on their principals. That their ciriticisim is mostly directed at a desire to return to power regardless of the merits or lack thereof of a particular issue.

The term "unpatriotic" would apply to those who criticise for personal gain without reference to the good of the country.

The term "patriotic" would apply to those who criticise out of conviction that something is wrong regardless of who will and will not benefit from the criticism.

Youre backing my point. Opposition to the patriot act is not being borne by politicians out of any specific desire to make a name for themselves or any form of specific gain, its being criticised because its making a mockery of the constitution that the country is built on.

The "Patriot" Act, and what it allows the legislature to do, in terms of the constition (unless hes amended it again) would be "Unpatriotic".

Re: Hes at it again

The Patriot Act will be renewed. A vast majority of those who are so patrioticly opposing it at the moment will suddenly vote for it once any political gain has been wrung out of it.

I am not passing judgement on the propriety of the act but I am very skeptical about the motives of all politicians, even those who claim to be acting out of principal. If they truly belive it is not in the best interests of the country, then they should maintain their opposition even if it means losing at the next election. Very few would go that far.

Mr Bush also said he expected a "full investigation" into who leaked information about the wiretap programme.

"My personal opinion is it was a shameful act for someone to disclose this very important programme in a time of war," he said.
The war with Eurasia will never end...

This is just him going back to the whole premise that any bills introduced in a "time of war" should be passed for the good of the nation.
Seeing as how he's already said the war on terror may never end, this means that every bill that's brought forward is during a "time of war" to him.
So it's just 'pass all the bills I bring forward! Or the terrorists win!"

I'd say he's more than likely just trying to get it passed again as so much effort went into coming up with the title:

If that's true, then why did these politicians vote for it the first time?

Are they going to invoke the popular 'Bush tricked us' defense (an oldie but a goodie) or perhaps the 'we voted for it before we voted against it' stratagem?

Which politican would be the one to vote 'No' to an act passed so close to the events of September 11th which proclaimed to help stop, apprehend and find 'terrorists'?
In that mood of hysteria they would have voted through anything, which clearly they did.

Re: Hes at it again

Yes, my country blows at the moment. Seriously. I am so happy the Patriot Act is down and out for now, I hope it stays out for the count.

I'm not ok with the government listening in on phone conversations of citizens, I don't care if it's 'technically' legal.

Democrats are opportunistic bastards that do not represent my progressive values, although kudos to them for not turning right while it's popular to be so.

Whatever. It doesn't seem like much of an improvement though.

I have no problem with people changing their minds, although I think politicians owe the public an explanation as to why they changed theirs.

But I think trying to paint this as a principled defense of Constitutional rights is mostly wishful thinking. For example, Senator Hillary Clinton's (NY) biggest objection to renewing the Patriot Act seems to be the formula for Homeland Security funding which she thinks gives too much money to rural states like Wyoming and not enough to urban states like New York.

The Senate unanimously approved a somewhat different version of the Patriot Act and a simple majorty probably favors the House version (the actual vote was to close debate and bring it to a vote, which requires a supermajority of 60%).

Actually, it's a vote on a motion to limit or end debate (cloture). Most legislative bodies have them (or else a fixed time limit for debate). The Senate's supermajority requirement is the only odd part, in that you have bills that would otherwise pass the Senate but can't be brought to a vote.

so, if the vote fails to get the supermajority (this sounds so mcdonalds ) will it come to a 'real' vote in a bit, or is this a political mechanism for people to avoid votes they'd rather not see?

Re: Hes at it again

Depends how long the Democrats can maintain the filibuster for (that's where they talk out bills so that they have no time to pass).

The session of Congress ends soon, so it really should be no sweat for them. Expect larger than usual orders of phone books though.

Re: Hes at it again

Yes, that's the vote for cloture as Tactitus was referring to above.

The latter. Without cloture, debate cannot be ended. The bill can be filibustered until either the proponents agree to table it or the opponents collapse from exhaustion. In practice, bills are usually tabled when they fail to get a cloture vote to avoid the long, drawn out process of a filibuster.

On a side-note, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is an incredible film.

Re: Hes at it again

And that was why I left it to Tactitus to explain it could only guess from context.

Let's have a cloture on the debate in this thread.

Re: Hes at it again

H.B.COLTONBOR*: *This is H.B. Coltonbor speaking. Half of
official Washington is here to see democracy's finest Joe, a
filibuster. The right to talk your head off. The American
priviledge of free speech in its most dramatic form. The least
man in that chamber, once he gets and holds that floor by the
rules, can hold it, and talk as long as he can stand on his feet.
Providing always, first that he does not sit down, second that he
does not leave the chamber or stop talking. The galleries are
packed. In the diplomatic gallery are the envoys of two dictator
powers, they have come here to see what they can't see at home-
Democracy in action.

JEFFERSON*: *...Ah, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
And to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men
deriving their just powers from the consent of the government,
and whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these
ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it. How am
I doing?

*scene ends*

JEFFERSON*: *I always get a great kick out of that part of the
Declaration of Independence. Now, your not gonna a country that
can make these kinds of rules work, if you haven't got men that
have learned to tell human rights from a punch in the nose.

DIZ*: *That's good for a headline.

JEFFERSON*: *It's the funny thing about men, ya' know. They all
start life being boys. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some of
these Senators were boys once. That's why it seemed like a pretty
good idea to me to get the boys out of crowded cities, and stuffy
basements for a couple of months out of the year. And build their
bodies and minds for man size jobs because those boys are gonna
be bhind these desks some of these days. It seemed like a pretty
good idea. Getting boys from all over the country, boys of all
nationalities and ways of living. Getting them together. Let them
find out what makes different people tick the way they do.
Because I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if
behind them they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary
everyday kindness and a little looking out for the other fellow,
too. That's pretty important, all that. It's just the blood and
bone and sinew of this democracy that some great men handed down
to the human race, that's all. But of course, if you've got to
build a dam where that boys camp ought to be, to get some graft
to pay off some political army or something, well that's a
different thing. Oh no, if you think I'm going back there and
tell those boys in my state, and say, "Look, now fellas forget
about it, forget all this stuff I've been telling you about this
land you live in, is a lot of hooey. this isn't your country, it
belongs to a lot of James Taylors". Oh, no. Not me. And anybody
here that thinks I'm gonna do that they got another thing coming.
That's alright, I just wanted to find out whether you still had
faces. I'm sorry gentlemen, I know I'm being disrespectful to
this honorable body, I know that, I...a guy like me should never
be allowed to get in here in the first place, I know that. And I
hate to stand here and try your patience like this but... either
I'm dead right or I'm crazy.

SENATOR 1*: *You wouldn't car to put that to a vote, would you
Senator?

SENATOR 2*: *Would the Senator yield for a question?

JEFFERSON*: *I yield.

SENATOR 2*: *In view of the gentleman's touching concern for the
Senators, and in view of the fact that he has been talking for
seven and one half hours and must be very, very tired, would he
permit a motion to recess until the morning? At which time, he
may be better able to continue with his profound babblings.

SAUNDERS*: *No, no, don't. Don't. Ask him. Ask, ask him.

JEFFERSON*: *Uh, Mr. President, what happens to me in the
morning? I mean about my having this floor, to go on with my
babblings?

PRESIDENT*: *If the Senator permits this motion for recess, he
won't have the floor in the morning to babble with or anything
else. Unless he is recognized first.

JEFFERSON*: *Uh, huh. As I was saying gentlemen, I'm either dead
right or I'm crazy. And I feel fine. What do ya' got, Dick?

DICK*: *Miss Saunders.

JEFFERSON*: *Oh.

SENATOR*: *Is the Senator yielding the floor?

JEFFERSON*: *Yield the... Oh no, oh no. Hey, I feel fine. The
Constitution of the United States. Page one, top left hand
corner. We the People of the United States in order to form a
more perfect union...
