A Bridge to Nowhere

Alaska has decided to spend $220 Million on a new bridge to connect the town of Ketchikan (Pop 8,000) with the island of Gravina (Pop 50).

This bridge will be longer than the Golden Gate Bridge.

What a fantastic idea! - I hear you say.

Yet some people, such as Senator Tom Coburn do not approve of the project.

You will be glad to hear that an effort to de-fund the so called "Bridge to Nowhere", along with other pork barrel projects was resoundingly defeated in the Senate by an 82 - 15 vote.

Thank heavens. Those poor residents of Gravina Island have been waiting for a bridge for years.

Actually, it will be the federal government spending the $220 million. :/

It would have been cheaper to buy each of the island's residents his or her own airplane.

Re: A Bridge to Nowhere

$4,400,000 per islander.

If they put a $5 toll on the bridge and each of the 50 islanders goes to and from the island once a day. The bridge would pay for itself in 1205 years, assuming no upkeep on the bridge and that the toll takers were volunteers.

Oviously a much needed project.

Re: A Bridge to Nowhere

if there's a big feck off bridge there, there's so going to be more people moving there. Firstly to build the damn thing, and then probably to hang around. I wouldn't be surprised if the population changed to 200+ on that island.
That means it's only 300 years
