Re: [uk] in the interestings of avoiding maternal wrath
I usually don't bother but I just found out that my sister got her a card so I'll have to do it too now to avoid being disowned.

Mother's Day in the US is still another 6-8 weeks away. I still have plenty of time but will probably waste it.

No, but wives demand gifts on such occasions even if they aren't mothers.
If my mother had lived, she would be 85, not an unheard of age though. My dad died last year and he was 93.

And if you have younger children, you have to shepherd them through the gift purchase/creation process.

My mother's 86 and still hanging in there.
She's on her second pacemaker though. :/

Hardly done it.
I always remember mum everyday. I don't need to do it on one day of the year.

Re: [uk] in the interestings of avoiding maternal wrath
I thought I might as well outline an idea I had re: Mothers Day a few weeks ago here. I already mentioned it to some people, but I feel it is good enough to repeat.
Next time I go to my parent's house I buy cards for all the events which are to occur that year requiring such things (discounting Xmas, but you could always do that as well if you like). I then fill in all these cards (fathers birthday, mothers birthday, fathers day, mothers day, etc) and leave them in a drawer.
I simply phone someone in the house (not neccesarily the person whose "day" it is) and ask them to get it from the drawer. "Thankyous" will follow and any pesky hurting of feelings through my natural laziness/lack of organisation is avoided!
One potential problem I see with this plan is the lack of availability of certain cards at certain times in the year. There are a few solutions to that, involving more effort though, regrettably.

Re: [uk] in the interestings of avoiding maternal wrath
Okay so so far all I have my mother is a card, and she told me that is all she wants. I'm now starting to get a sinking feeling though that if I turn up with only this she won't be best pleased. I still have time to fix this as I am not due home till Tuesday, so what would you lot do?

Flowers.
Or have more sex with her. The choice is yours.

i told my mum yesterday that i wasn't getting her anything for mothers day and she said good.
Then she asked if I was getting her a card and I said no - waste of paper. She said good.

Re: [uk] in the interestings of avoiding maternal wrath
she's just saying that to make you feel better, she'll be crying inside.
I got my mum a book, handily, it's one I wouldn't mind reading, so will borrow it when she's done
