Guys if parents are afraid to talk to their children about sex don't you think that's a problem that should be addressed rather than quick-fixed?

of course it is. however i think that the best way to fix that is to make sex a more open subject in general... which involves education no matter what way you look at it. Easiest way to educate people? In schools, thats what they are for ater all.

i don't give a shit what parents do or don't do.

I want all children given sex education by the state. The state has a huge interest in this area. It also has a duty to it's children to give them clear unbias advice.

My point is that while having middle aged people teaching children about sex might seem frumpy and old fashioned, these are the people probably in the best position to do it.

Of course bringing nurses and stuff in is a great idea, but nurses tend to be busy enough with our public sector health system.

A teacher isn't likely to tell the pupils falsities. They also (hopefully) have the pupil's best interests at heart. While they might not be trendy or have the best idea about sex itself, a teacher doing SexEd will have enough training to be able to talk through the basic precautions and things kids need to know before, or during, puberty.

From what I understand of the changes, and the research I've done into this subject.
The curriculum begins by focussing on primary children and developing the idea of "family"
Not the old definition of the family, eg 2.4 children, but more an understanding of the roles a mother and father play, developing within the child an appreciation of the part a parent plays, and their values and responsibilities.
I'm gussing that this is to help them at a later stage to realise the responsibilities sex has, babies, relationships, emotional well being etc.

The actual 'what is sex' talk, takes place initially now in Primary 4/5.
the curriculum, and reccomendations from the executive, stipulate a need for an external source to do this talk. similar to the idea of classroom assistants that early primary school teachers have. This specialist would have specific training in both child care and sex ed.

High school education would continue with social and emotional development, the importance of relationships, and coping with emotions.
Later high school Sex ed covers, appreciating your sexuality, homosexual sex, precautions and consequences/effects, oral sex, precautions and consequences/effects.

Again, the executive suggests a specialist role be created for sex ed, so apparently no more bearded 50 year old guidance teachers looking out the window as a nurse shows the class how to put on a condom.

So, more centred on talking about relationships, emotional wellbeing and what it means, rather than just,
"heres a bag of condoms and a diagram"....

I'm still not entirely sure that primary 4 is the right age to be telling them the facts of life........

I suppose the balance between hitting puberty and maturity is a difficult one to guage.

It may well be that young children are being exposed to these 'facts' earlier in life in any case, simply through the widening of sexually explicit images and publications in the mainstream media.

If that is so then it is probably better to provide children with information at a younger age in order to avoid misinforming or confusing them.

Then again, is this too far?

when so many children are having children themselves at ages 12/13, they need to get in early to get hte message across.

they are trying to build in a whole 'belief system' if you will, to tackle teenage pregnancy from its roots.
