Presumably the judge's award reflected how much the medical bills were. These things are generally done to restore the status quo in some sense.

I felt some sympathy for the woman (obviously the court case was slightly OTT) since she may have incurred medical bills she couldn't afford but her attitude "I hope this teaches them a lesson" is sickening. As Roady points out, hopefully her house is vandalised by people who won't be able to pay her a dime.

Yes but does a visit to the hospital actually cost $900? I believe that in order to see a specialist in Sweden you pay like, $30. And since it doesn't say that she had to go to operations or anything it is fairly safe to say that she didn't ahve any lifethreatening symptoms.

So why 900?

I'd imagine a lot of those costs were simply tests. Having x-rays and so forth is an expensive business especially if they're trying to be half-way thorough.

not really, as now they have legal bills to pay as well, if they offered to pay up front and she took them to court out of sheer bloody mindedness, she should have got nothing

EDIT: and the report says that she was in the house with her 18 year old daughter and she had already phoned the police, who determined that no crime had been commited

Emergency Room visits are substantially more expensive, because they operate "on demand." If you call up your regular Doctor, schedule an appointment, and have the same procedures done at their convenience, it's a lot cheaper.

Social security is very expensive in the US so I've heard.
Is it true that you need to bring your creditcard when you need to go see a doctor?
I even heard a rumour of someone not being operated for something after losing conciousness because no one was there to ensure the bill would be paid.
I'm not sure what's true of all this, but it sounds bad.

Given the amount, I suspect it went to small claims court--so no legal fees.

Of course it was. They had already offered - quite generously in my opinion - to pay her bills out of court. However, she decided to milk the case for all it wasn't worth via civil litigation. It should never have even come to court.

Look. Imagine what you actually would feel like if you did go though the entire horribly tiresome procedure of getting up, opening the door and everything, wouldn't you feel glad anyway?

Wouldn't this sort of action lift your spirit a bit?

They knocked, they didn't ring the bell, wich means your kids won't wake up. They bring cookies, wich is terribly nice.

In the article it says that they weren't able to do this during daytime, so they did it at night.

If I did this and got to your house, I would at least expect some sort of smile, some sort of positive respons.

It would really down me if you started going on about how inconsiderite it is to come at night bringing gifts.

So in conclusion.

This really was a nice thing, not a bad thing.

Legally, I don't think that the girls would be held liable in the UK for what they did. Ok, so but for their actions, the old lady wouldn't have had an anxiety attack; however, it wasn't reasonably foreseeable that it would occur.

I've been doing prep for a causation seminar for tort all day, bastards.
