Re: DVD's
Single file as in what?
For backup, the easiest way is to install something like AnyDVD which strips the CSS and Region protection off the disc on the fly, then copy the contents of the disc to the harddrive and zip it, or burn it back to a DVD-R/DVD-RDL.
If you just want to make an avi out of it, there are no end of ways to do so but it will take significantly longer (like, hours) than a straight copy-burn procedure.

Re: DVD's
The file format doesn't matter much, but avi would be nice, i was hoping for a specific bit of software...

Re: DVD's
DVDDecrypter works well but you can't really get hold of it through legitimate channels any more. It'll rip a DVD (stripping the CSS content protection) into what is effectively a big-assed .iso that you can mount with Daemon Tools or whatever virtual drive software you prefer. I tend to do it for game discs if only because I can't really be dicked with things that I can't access with my mouse =( I got it as part of the Gordian Knot pack but I don't know if it's still a part of it or what, every 'normal' download site for the app has taken it down as a result of legal threats.

Re: DVD's
One thing to bear in mind, while your perfectly entitled to backup your media under the Fair use aspects of copyright law breaking copy protection is actually illegal so anything which circumnativates CSS and the region coding to allow you to make a backup of your DVD's puts you in murky waters.

Re: DVD's
Afaik it's only illegal to bypass CSS in the states.
Last time I heard anything here, copy protection was expected to accomodate fair use provisions.

Re: DVD's
If you don't strip the CSS from a backup of a DVD, is it even usable? I can't say I've ever tried.

Re: DVD's
AutoGK is what I would recommend.
It will take your DVD source files and automatically convert them to DivX/XVid AVI files with surprisingly good quality (adjustable anyway).
Takes all the messing around and geuss work out of trying to do the many conversions necessary to get a .AVI out of it. Though Megla is right, it'll typically takes hours to encode the material.

Re: DVD's
Ok, so having ripped everything I want with DVD shrink, are there any (free) players that will use the links between the VideoTS files, rather than, as VLC does, ignore them and hope that they go away?
