Based on evidence give in this thread and my own experimentation I'm 100% convinced the colours are in your mind only.

If you can still see the coloured haze, try this and see if it works. Look away from the image for a while so as not to be distracted, now concentrate on telling yourself the colours are not there, don't stop until you feel you have sucessfully convinced yourself of their non-existance. Then try looking back at the picture, and try to avoid suggestive thoughts that the colours should be there still. I found when doing this 99% of the time it worked, i think it is also aided by the fact that the lines themselves produce a seperate optical illusion appearing to have grey areas inbetween, which can appear to be indistinguishable from green at times.
