Free credits for coders
Planetarion relies on 3rd party tools for the game, yet some of the people who create them get very little reward from it.
To encourage people to create more useful tools and applications I'm suggesting that anyone who maintains a useful public tool or application should get a free credit per round from PA team as a thank you for helping the community. They don't have to share the source code, they just have to maintain it to get a new credit each round. Anyone producing open source utilities which they don't host but others use should get a new credit each around whilst the code is being updated for each round.
I feel that people like Sandman, Thrud and anyone else who creates useful tools deserve a small token of appreciation for the hard work they put into helping the game.

Re: Free credits for coders
and are you offering to stump up the cash for the credits?
these are third party tools, not something that pateam controls or is responsible for. Why should they give out free credits for things that are created by the community, for the community. Not for any personal gain

What cash? To give something away should not cost anyone anything. There is no real cost, the majority of the costs for the game are fixed costs.

And Planetarion benefits from it. PA team benefits from it because they don't need to put in all the effort into coding various tools because Sandmans (and other sites) does a better job of it.
You want to know what gave me this idea? Another company doing something similar. They realised that by encouraging people to help code for them with a freebie, they'll get a wider variety of tools which makes their product better. Apply this to Planetarion, you might get a wider variety of useful tools which the entire community can use.

This is actually a good idea.

Re: Free credits for coders
i guess you would make something like " the best/most popular 5 or 10 sites" get a free credit. With a vote here on forums like name of the round.
Else everyone will host a bcalc or something similar to a free credit but that wont really be useful for anyone.

"At the admin's discretion" sounds good to me.

Its a free credit, for obviously remaining loyal to this somewhat diminishing game. They have hosted tools for a number of rounds now and have asked for nothing in return.. how about PAteam shows some appreciation?

Re: Free credits for coders
A nice idea. I doubt there are that many sites which would qualify, say 10 free credits for the best 10 sites/applications - this would only mean a loss of £33.30 revenue.
Some of these people have put many hours of effect into improving the out of game aspects of Planetarion. Without battle calcs and search sites the game would be quite a poor place and far far more difficult - I doubt people would even tolerate the game without them.
This could promote some new activity into developing new sites and tools, things seem to have stagnated a bit recently.

Indeed. PA Team would then have to host these things themselves, which would probably cost more than handing out some free credits. On the other hand, handing out some free credits costs more than not doing it, and there's plenty of sites around even when people don't get credits for it, so really, there is no real commercial reason to give out credits to contributors. Just a moral one, perhaps.

Re: Free credits for coders
I think the point behind this idea is that there is a good commercial reason to do it - to encourage people to create new sites and tools.
There are plenty of battle calcs available which are of reasonable quality. There is one major search site and most of the others can't quite seem to compete with it, credits available for a decent competitor might stimulate competition.
On the negative side there are no alliance arbiters freely available, every alliance seems to have to do their own from scratch - or rely on the in game alliance controls (which are awful). I'd say there is also a possibility of an unofficial alliance hosting which could gain interest if the features it offered were good enough and if there was enough trust in it.
The community can be a useful asset if used in the right way. Getting people to code for you with a minor reward is just one such way.

Actually, there is a public arbiter: Munin in #transcendancy
