Probably old, and you'll probably shout at me but...

(the comment at the bottom) is rather amusing, in a geeky kind of way :|

Is it usual to quote the contents of links?

Re: Probably old, and you'll probably shout at me but...
I explain routing to people by comparing delivering a letter to from a mailbox in Town A to a street in another Town B.
The post office in Town A knows nothing about the street, but know it is Town B. The post office doesn't know exactly where in teh Town teh street is, but knows that the sub-office near there knows about it. The sub-office knows where the street is and even has someone who can deliver it. Delivery complete.
However, if any one of the main offices doesn't know about the others, then the letter gets lost.
I reckon about 1 person in 10 understands the comparison, maybe that's why my training classes take ten times as long as they should...?

Thats a pretty confusing analogy . A better snailmail related one might be to imagine post getting sent to people staying in a hotel. The postman delivers all the mail for the residents to the reception desk, then lets the hotel workers sort out what letters go to what rooms. I dunno.

When you scrawl all over a white board showing the letters 'hopping' from one place to another, being 'forwarded' by the post offices, it makes a lot more sense.

Didn't you know? Because of this forum's enormous popularity and activity, any link posted will automatically be visited by TEN MILLION users.
This then reduces said website to a crawl. Therefore, helpful karma-whores post the article to save other users disappointment.
Oh hang on, wrong site...

The best ping analogy I read was one about Pirates and Parrots. Although it relates to traceroute more specifically.

(Samspade's site seems to be running slow today but the link does come up eventually)
