Shutting Down with Windows XP

Hello All

On Monday my MD updated his PC from a Windows update from the Microsoft website via the globe in the systray.

It prompted him to restart his machine and he did so.

Somehow and Microsoft have no ****ing idea why, it wiped his passwords for local and domain accounts.

When phoning Microsoft they couldn't resolve the issue by going to restore points as we have no access to any of the desktops of any accounts.

So Microsoft asked me to do a fresh install but backing up any files he had left on there. Then to do a total format and put the files back on.

Now for some stupid and no doubt pathetic reason his laptop will not shut down unless he holds in the power button.

Typical!!!

Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?

The OS is Windows XP Pro and is on a Dell Inspiron 5100

The message Event Viewer gives me is the following....

Thank you

Dan

Re: Shutting Down with Windows XP

Can u switch off Power Management in the BIOS, then see if windows can shutdown properly (It should stop at "It is now safe to turn off your computer" as the ACPI is switched off.) This will only show that ACPI drivers or configuration are at fault.

Click start, then Run and type MSINFO32 and click OK.

Take a screenie of the system summary. That might give you the motherboard type and number.

Re: Shutting Down with Windows XP

OK, you could try updating the BIOS to the latest version:
