Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
I got a question to ask.
If you're a full time student who works part-time do you need to pay tax if you're earning a certain amount of £s?

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
Yes you do as far as I am aware. I am not sure of the exact amount but I think it is around £4500 a year before you start paying income tax. Though only on what you earn over that.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
I've signed forms before so I don't pay tax as a student, but I forget the number

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
You have to pay national insurance if you earn over a certain amount per week (around £80 i believe, although i'm not exactly sure).
You don't have to pay income tax unless you earn more than your personal allowance. If they take tax straight out of your earnings you have to go to your local inland revenue office with a copy of your pay slip and ask them to stop.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
As a student you can sign a form that states you are a student and only work in holidays and earn less than the tax free allowance for a single person.
If you earn more than the tax free allowance you cannot sign the form.
This generally means that most students don;t have to pay any income tax as its unliekly they are earning over £4500 per year or whatever the allowance is.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
I think the basic tax allowance band is 3600 - I know it was when i paid tax - inlandrevenue.gov.uk has linkage and you can go into the post office for a form that explains it all

I'm fairly sure that unless you earn over £4,600 you are exempt from tax.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
even though i'd signed the formed and earn less than the £4500 (a lot less), the bastards still took £40 off me
I'm just waiting for my P60 for last year, then i shall claim it back

For the 05/06 tax year, the figure is that the 1st £4,895 is tax free, then £4,896-£6,985 = 10% tax.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
Well I earn £700+ a month.
Could someone do the maths and tell me if I should pay tax or not?

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
If you do then I hope you die fyi.
Also I've always had to pay tax when I've worked in the summer but once you leave you can get some form and claim it all back. I'm currently short of cash so I'm going to send away and get the £300 stolen from me last summer

Alternatively you can not be lazy and fill in the form when you actually start the job.

Re: Who works with the Inland Revenue here?
If you look at your tax code on a pay slip if will give an indication - e.g. I was on tax code 438L for a significant period which at the time I believe meant if I earned £4380 pounds per year I'd pay the lowest rate of income tax on everything above that £4380. I think that was how it worked neway...
