A colleague of mine
could have caused a bomb scare and cordoned central London off by leaving a rucksack and a string bag outside St. Giles Hotel at Tottenham Court Road.
That's the short version of it.
Long version?
Basically this new-ish guy called Melvyn was asked by my assistant manager to deliver a rucksack and a string bag to St. Giles Hotel to someone who works for the company (Phones4u). That was all.
Melvyn went out. 5 mins later, he was back.
10 mins later, the Old Bill show up. With the rucksack and the string bag. And vans and the whole shabang!
Inside it was a laptop with LAN wires etc. and some sensitive information (application forms etc.). They said that it was left outside the hotel unattended. Asked him why he left it there, Melvyn said he was coming back for it but forgot.
The manager had a word with him. He said he didn't know where the hotel was, left it outside and was coming back for it but forgot. He was coming back to ask where the hotel was.
And the hotel is across the street.

Yeah, the more policemen you get on the scene the more points you get.
