It all depends if the AP has a range extender on it as well.
It won't matter if you have an amplifier, if the AP signal strength is too low. Sure, you'll amplify the received (low level) signal, but the resulting signal to noise ratio will mean the throughput you get will be mediocre at best.
You'll be using 802.11g, and ranges for that are in the order of a few hundred metres, even with extenders, and once you start going longer distances, you'll be fighting with other signals, who are trying to do exactly the same thing as you are, on the same frequency band.
