Losing Streaks Do Not Exist
It's been a while since I've made one of these threads so here we go:
Losing streaks do not exist. It is all psychological. When playing poker the other day and I was having no good hands at all. After the game I said I was on a losing streak and the guy replied to me that losing streaks do not exist. I accepted this as I know this to be true. But tonight I was thinking about losing streaks and it is all a state of mind.
While in a losing streak you may have a lot of good cards and lose and in a winning streak you may have a lot of bad hands and still win. It is all a state of mind. If you are on a wining streak and were fortunate to win on some good cards it may be because of the psychology of the table.
During the game there are lots winners and losers and each of their mind-states will be altered according to how well they are doing. The player who feels he is on a winning streak will generally be willing to risk more as he has more to lose and feels that his luck is in at the moment, so why waste it? Accordingly the players who are now on a losing streak will be less wiling to go in on low-medium cards as they just want to ride out their losing streak.
So by not going in they are reducing their chances of winning and therefore of breaking their losing streak. By the winning streak going in on low-medium cards and the losing streak continuing not to bet on those cards the winning streak continues. This depends on the experience of the player and the level of winning or losing you are at. Those who feel they are holding their own may be a bit more adventurous, while those who feel that they are just hanging on may be less adventurous and this is the same at every level.
So while people say that losing streaks do not exist this is not true. They do exist but only in your mind. You may not believe them but if you are changing your game depending on how well you are doing then you subconsciously believe in winning and losing streaks and that is enough to affect your game.

Losing streaks do exist, just from basic probability.

Re: Losing Streaks Do Not Exist
Assuming that the cards are shuffled properly then each hand should be random and would therefore not be affected by the preceeding hand so you have an equal chance of winning.

So? Say you have 1/2 chance of winning and losing, then 1/16 of the time you'll go on a four game losing streak.
Losing streaks tend to be defined after the event (or at least partially so) anyway. Is 2 losses a losing streak? What about 3, or 4?

Partially formed but not totally. It is the partial formation which decides if you change your game or not, but there is no reason why you would continue to keep losing.

Re: Losing Streaks Do Not Exist
A losing streak implies that your bad luck is influencing your future cards though.
Which isn't possible. As what you get is pretty much random (unless you've been counting what has come up already) - ie: equal chance of anything occuring.
So no, you can't get losing streaks in that your losing keeps going on because you're on a "streak", which affects the cards you get.
But yes, you can be on a losing streak in that you keep getting unlucky cards. That isn't what I define a losing streak as though.

Losing streaks don't affect the future guys. You're always on a losing streak (meaning it's been happening for a while) as opposed to actually thinking you're going to get unlucky in the immediate future. Obviously basic probability doesn't change but it's perfectly reasonable to have a couple of unlucky games in a row.

You've made a good start if you're spelling lose with two "o"s

Re: Losing Streaks Do Not Exist
When i started war3 my first account had a astounishing 23 losses IN A ROW
and we are talking about a game which usually lasts 20 mins, meaning that ive spent at least 7 and a half hours losing consistently!
wow
so happy ive quit that game =)
anyways
when i was like on the 14th loss i just couldnt be bothered to do the little things, like organizing your troops or your buildings.... little things that ultimately leads to victory =/
whenever i start losing i have to stop, reconsider, make another plan and stuff....

Really, arguing about poorly defined things isn't ever going to be productive. When will this be learnt?
