Re: being a proxy server (cry for help eh)
a) Erm, a proxy server is a proxy server. If you set it up to use your internal interface then it's for your LAN. If you set it up to use your external interface (see b) then it's for the Internet
b) You're out of your mind. Unless you know what you're doing the result is an open proxy server, which can be used by anyone to forward anything. This is exactly the sort of thing that makes your average spammer's day. Many IRC networks (Netgamers included last time I checked) will scan for open proxies and boot you off the network if you have one.
They are a risk and a liability, and unless you have very good reason you shouldn't even be considering this.

Use Squid.
Don't use any microsoft proxy software unless you like spending time rebooting the proxy server.

Re: being a proxy server (cry for help eh)
I forgot to mention - if you don't lock it down properly and end up running it open, your ISP will almost certainly boot you with as soon as they discover it, or as soon as they notice the traffic it's generating as spam mail gets routed through it - whichever happens first.

Re: being a proxy server (cry for help eh)
if its to be accepting connections from the internet you better have some very very very restrictive firewall rules for it.

At no point i said i would act as an open proxy. I will run it to myself so i can connect to said proxy server at work.
The iprange of said proxy would be 1 ip: Mine

Does analogx not do the job? Or is that purely LAN? I'm sure that could work.

Re: being a proxy server (cry for help eh)
I know this comes too late, but who indeed said that he wanted an OPEN proxy. Firewall rules (i.e. allowing ONE IP) or dynamic IPs solve some problems. Often you just want a proxy from a friend to access certain sites that are banned quickly. Or when you test your own network and you don't have a proxy at hand.
Also, aren't there firewall-proxy-things like SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 that require authentification?
There you have your "open proxy to the internet", but still secured.
You screaming mob.
Anyway, I can recommend JANA-Server. Dunno if it works on the internet, but I'm almost certain it should. Given the right configuration.

Re: being a proxy server (cry for help eh)
ISA Server.
Ignore what people say about it being Microsoft crap, once you get your head around the configuration of it then it's a great piece of software.
Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn't know how to configure it correctly.
I mean, I can't get internet access at home after 7pm. It doesn't let me run IRC or any file sharing programs, which stops me being illegal.
Wonderful software.
If you even think about installing it, I'll hunt you down myself.
