I Watched A Poker Tournament On TV
they show poker tournaments (texas hold 'em of course) on our sports channel.
which isn't that exciting.
but what is exciting is the influx of pathetic puter nerds into these tournaments.
5, 10 years ago by the last round of any major tournament, you have the same bunch of world-class poker players sitting at the table every time.
but now, a lot of players are winning their way into these tournaments by winning online poker tournaments.
anyway, so the table they were showing had a couple of world champions, and this deathly pale 15-year-old computer nerd.
and of course you know who was cleaning everyone out. i've never seen anyone get as mad as one of the pros when he gets beat by the kid when the kid decided to play a 7/4 offsuit.
it was great.
PS: the world series of poker was won this year by an online player too.
kinda looks like being able to read people's faces isn't really the key factor.

Re: I Watched A Poker Tournament On TV
Amusingly, while I read this I was playing on-line poker.
Anyway - it's not usually how you read someone's face (that's just movie bullshit), it's about reading their play (i.e. when they raise, call, etc). That's the same regardless.

no, not at all, you can win without ever having to have a decent hand (although it helps)... i watch late nite poker and WPT almost everynight and it's really interesting, it's like seeing how ppls minds work etc and you can begin to tell when they're going to play when they're not and what they're going to raise etc.

Re: I Watched A Poker Tournament On TV
If you have one table of 9 muppets and one world class player the world class player will never look as good as he is. Over a long enough time period wankers who play 4,7 offsuit always get cleaned out. And reading facial expressions is stupidly over-rated once you're playing against decent players. The thing is most of these world class players have played each other before and know general play so you work down onto the finer points. Total computer nerds who nobody knows are a random factor, for a while. I can guarantee you that none of them will be constantly top players for 20 years like Doyle Brunson

they used to have the "Magic: The Gathering" world championships on ESPN. I don't think they do anymore.

Re: I Watched A Poker Tournament On TV
As I understand it, they are trying to get a gambling channel of the ground in the US, but for some reaosn it has to go through Congress or something odd.
But ESPN shows things like Computer Games doesn't it? Poker doesn't seem like that different.
I remember when Channel 4 showed the Kasparov vs Short chess games and me and my all geek friends used to get home from school to watch it on TV!
(Realisation...) Oh god, I've wasted my life.
p.s. Anyone else play Poker on-line here?

Watching sports channels isn't a pastime; it's an affliction.
