Re: [puzzle] Driving Me Insane
There are only certain numbers that the final number can be. All those numbers are at the end, with that same symbol on.
But you know now anyway!

Re: [puzzle] Driving Me Insane
If that links me to a hypothetical situation involving an aeroplane and infinatly long runway I swear I will hunt you down and kill you using a cheese grater.
Edit: OK, you get to live.

If you did the math right, you shouldn't of had a different symbol.

Interesting, I did it twice the first time and it gave me the same symbol, but just tried it again and it gave me two different ones.

I imagine that the numbers that the symbol corresponds to change in that case. The symbol that comes up at the end has to be associated with the same numbers.
Yup, I just checked, it's always multiples of 9.
So, now to work out why the formula always gives you a multiple of 9, that's the only question left.
right, that was my thinking time.
You have a 2 digit number, you add both of the digits together and subtract that from the total, this always gives a multiple of 9. This is because subtracting the second digit takes it down to a round number (i.e a multiple of 10) and then subtracting the first digit removes another 1 for every 10, taking it down to 9.

Re: [puzzle] Driving Me Insane
yes, If the two digits are X and Y then:
(X*10 + Y) - (X+Y) = X*9

yeh simple really - you'll notice that all multiples of 9 then have the same symbol...

Re: [puzzle] Driving Me Insane
10 1+0 = 1, 10-1 = 9.
9 is the right answer.
They've proved the maths above

You also can't subtract one from ten.

Given that it works with any 2 digit number, saying it works with any specific one is fairly redundent.

94 minus (9+4=13) is 81 and a multiple of 9 (9*9). So that's hardly surprising.
