Premiership in new £625m TV deal

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6273617.stm

Quote:
The winner of football's Premiership will net an extra £50m from next season after the league agreed a new £625m deal for overseas television rights.
Income from the deal means even the team finishing bottom of the pile will claim £30m - about what current title holders Chelsea won last season.
...
BBC sports editor Mihir Bose said that the big winners of the new deal would be top-flight players and their agents, with supporters and lower league sides unlikely to see any real benefits.
Shocking.

that money should be filtered down the leagues to improve all clubs not just the lucky few.

It's sickening the amount of money being handed out to the top 20 clubs in a pyramid of over 600.

The premiership and the national game would collapse without the support of smaller clubs developing players.
Then you have the winners getting over £80m! (when they're the ones needing the money the least!)
You have clubs like Notts County going out of business with debts that are absolutely tiny in comparison to the turnover of the largest clubs.

Imagine Watford finishing bottom this season but starting next season with an extra £30m prize money in their coffers! Noone in the championship would be able to compete.

Also, do you think they'll pass these extra profits onto the supporter in the guise of lower ticket prices? I severely doubt it...

If supporters are dumb enough to pay 40-50 pound to watch a football match then clubs will keep charging this amount. Why would they want to cut ticket prices when they are filling their stadiums every week?

yeah it is pretty much shit the way they plan to dish out the money, what with most top clubs already being owned by million/billionaires

whoo! c'mon UNITED!!

More money for United can't be such a bad thing?
Tbh i think that Its going to get alot different in the premiership, with abramovich buying chelsea, Glaziers buying United, West ham has been taken over, and the bid by the 5th richest man in the world wanting to buy liverpool...
Its going to get interesting, good for me as a man united fan, but even better im sure for the neutral.

The quality declines drastically when you get out of those 4 teams. Noone wants to watch Charlton play Wigan or whatever apart from fans of those clubs and diehard Premiership followers, so its understandable that the clubs people actually want to see get the most money, since they are the ones who carry the television package and make the league worth watching. The alternative would be clubs individually negotiating their own TV rights, which would leave those outside the big 4 even worse off.

The problems are rooted in two areas: season tickets and tv money.

Season Tickets generally average out to about £28/30 a game (still too expensive, but not quite extortion) but they have other massive benefits, such as priority on away and cup tickets, which are very attractive options to have. Once you've got a season ticket holder it's a guaranteed bum on seat, and if a club has a majority of season ticket holders, it never has to worry about an empty ground. On top of that, a lot of clubs make sure their fans are 'locked in' by offering discounted early bird season tickets for those who get in early, the difference is maybe a few quid a game, so people always get in fast to secure their seat for the next season.

What clubs are afraid of is that if they lower one-off ticket prices mid season, then season ticket holders feel short changed and the clubs lose a huge chunk of income at the start of the season, but they know for a fact they can keep charging that because there are people who want to watch premiership football week in, week out and if the fans won't pay, well someone who just wants to watch that standard of football will easily replace them - these people aren't necessarily fans, they are just people who want to watch football, and don't really mind what they pay because they have a large income. Our neighbours, scum, had this very kind of 'fan' when they were in the top flight, but they've now all gone, probably to sit in the top tier of the emirates or somewhere.

So fans where the uptake of season tickets are high (because the club has a large core support) are powerless as either they stop paying and stop watching the team they've supported since they were a kid and just get replaced by someone else, or they pay top dollar and have to live on a shoestring as a result.

This is why teams like Blackburn, Bolton and Wigan have been forced to reduce prices, while other clubs don't have to because they aren't rolling in money, don't have legions of fans, therefore have to reduce prices to get people in.

The problem is that football is becoming terrifically poor value but fans (as in people who care) are generally powerless to stop it, because they love their club, or because there will always be others ready to take their place. You may think it stupid, but to some people football is not just entertainment. Because season tickets lock high prices in where uptake of them is large (and will continue to be) and because TV money means that clubs can afford to be complacent. Everyone knows a prem game should never be more than £20-25 for a one off ticket, if that.

A good example is the chappers geezer off Radio 1 - he wanted to not renew his season ticket at old trafford to protest at the club over Glazer but realised it was pointless - as ultimately, someone from Norway/Essex/Cornwall would just replace him.

The result is stupid prices for a matchday ticket because season tickets can be set at a reasonably high level, and still be bought up. The only people who can really intervene is the FA (Who are useless, just look at our national team), government/competition commission, but because your average fan is the kind of person people in power don't generally care for, it will probably never happen.

Thats right. when the Glaziers first came to United there was big protests and people decided to boycott a game. some of the regular season ticket holders didnt show up, but there was still a 3/4 full stadium. I have a season ticket and knew that i've paid for it and there are so many other people who want my ticket, that im not going to give it up. For every season ticket going free there are hundreds of people on a waiting list for it.

The point is that all this does is make the league less competitive and far more boring. Obviously it depends what you want out of the premier league. The aim of the premier league as it stands is to create 3 or 4 all star teams and say hell to the rest, so if you want competition, you are probably better off supporting a lower league club. But actually all it does is make the product far worse than it could be but it entertains people who don't really know anything about football, and there are far more people like that than people who do.

To break through the glass ceiling you've got to either have millions or have the next Brian Clough in charge.

That right there is the main reason why this sucks so much in my opinion - the difference in finances between Premiership and lower divisions is already vast (even between the top 4 and the rest of the premiership). this new deal will just perpetuate the cycle of yoyo clubs going up, being unable to compete, getting the money, going down, using the money to get back up etc... My work colleagues here don't watch premiership games anymore because there isn't any real competition, I find it hard talking about League 1 and the Championship (despite supporting Derby) in great detail, but there always seems to be such a race and such passion for those lower leagues.

Anyway, the only way I could potentially see this as a good thing is if the clubs who will be getting this extra $$ were to start buying players from lower division sides for reasonable amounts, slowly filtering the wealth down. Alternatively I saw an argument on the soccer365 boards for premiership clubs being forced to be 'parent clubs' to a couple of lower division clubs, paying them royalties for their ongoing relationships, loaning fringe players, etc... Kinda reminds me of the good old days when Chelsea and Kingstonian had their agreement of a friendly every season (which Kingstonian benefited from hugely w/gate receipts). As far as I know that agreement was cancelled 4yrs ago. Anyways, I've gone off topic, suffice to say I think it's great for those in the Premiership, and for those who can get there 'quickly', otherwise it's just widening the gap.

Re: Premiership in new £625m TV deal

Not just being single minded, but the premiership has to represnt the english legue. if we had 20 decent teams in the premiership then i think we would just get raped in the champions legue. The fact that we have a few good tems and so too do other legues, means that the champios league really is the clash of the best players in the world. If the players were split up then this would reduce the quality of football in the champions legue.
Maybe this post isnt appropriate for the pemiership, but i think the whole picture has to be looked at.
