Onslaught – Chapter 1: The Flight of Angels

Novalis cursed quietly. Even wrapped within the chaotic ball of sound that was his bridge- power diversion requests, diagnostics of new systems and repair calls all shouted at top volume across the cramped pit and echoing from the high ceiling- one voice always managed to ring clear.
Turning round so that his upper body was haloed by the soft blue light of the nearest terminal, Novalis raised his hand in greeting to the Naval intermediary, Commissar Brendel. Standing somewhat uncomfortably in the smoky wash of Chief Engineer Geraint’s newest “coolant system”, Brendel still made an impressive sight, dress uniform perfectly turned out as always. Novalis stepped forward, weaving between the busy crewmembers and half finished repairs and upgrades distorting the once clean surface of the small bridge.
“Any news?” Novalis asked bluntly, though at great volume, tired from the frantic rush surrounding the approach to Sol.
“I’m pleased to say, yes. Given your crew’s experience and the state of the defences around the Sol system, the navy have given you license to operate in official battlegroups. It’s no real honour, believe me; you’re one of many ships. You are, however, to report your ship to Utopia- with all haste. Probably in order to warn you about discipline. You do remember what that is, yes?” Turning smartly, Brendel proceeded with military grace back down the hatch to a maintenance passage.
“With all haste, remember. I’ll be in my quarters if you need me.”
Biting back numerous charms against self-righteous, anal retentive and technically superior Officers, Novalis turned to view his crew rushing to finish the tasks they had before new ones could present themselves. No point aggravating the source of firepower that the men of Aedaron’s Vengeance were relying on for their fight against those further accursed aliens.
He cupped his hands to his mouth before shouting to the swarming mass.
“New heading, boys! Utopia. Inform the launch deck repair crew, and re-direct their diagnostic time to the navcomp… oh, and tell the guys in C deck to check the re-routers... Michel, I want the diagnostics on the port battery checked again…. ”

After that fought at most of the last major battels preforming quiet well. In the Battle of Orrt Cloud his commad distinguesed itself by destroying five enemy cruisers in an ambush. Alexander prides himself on never leaving one of his men behind. The fact he was selected for this mission was a great blow to this pride. When he tryed to turn it down he was told that in order for the human race to survive everyone of the angels had to make it out, it was his beilf in never leaving a man.

YES, we're fleeing from a huge and overpowerfull enemy that will obliterate us unless we run like hell. Boarding a ship innately takes a large amount of time, especially if trying to take control of the ship.

Ofcourse just dropping in a loaded assault shuttle to bust their engines/other important components is good, provided the shuttle gets back in time

you do want the shuttle to come back, ofcourse anybody who gets even slightly wounded would have to be left behind, and when the shuttle arrives it'll have to be sprayed with something the parasites won't survive, like super-heated engine plasma.
Ofcourse you could probably also just heat it up to 500 degrees or so, the troops and pilots would be in space-suits so they'd survive, but the parasites wouldn't be space-suits, so they'd be dead

Swarm Race Information

The Swarm is a race of parasitical organisms. Their origins are unknown, but their power is well known, as is their evilness. They view all organic life as “cattle” for them to consume and inhabit. The individual swarm resembles an eel approximately a foot long. Dissection of those they infested reveal they wrap themselves around the spinal column, with their “heads” entering the lower brain via a series of tendrils. This gives them complete control over their host, though some evidence indicates that the host is aware to some degree what is happening. The Swarm can also manipulate the host’s hormones, giving them what ranges from double to triple the hosts normal strength and speed, and giving the host the ability to regenerate from wounds. This comes at the cost that 99% of infected individuals are incapable of breeding. Before the Swarm started infesting humans, the following races were encountered and classified as hosts:

• Imp – Standing on average 6 feet tall, weighing in at 250 lbs, these creatures are bipedal. At that their similarities end, for their head possesses eight eyes, giving them incredible vision. Their skin is a dark brown, thick and tough, able to take a great deal of punishment. They also have the ability of generate a form of plasma in their hands, and throw it with moderate accuracy and distance at targets. Captured Swarm ships have revealed that this was one of the first races that they conquered, and also that this breed is rapidly becoming extinct.
• Hell Knight – Standing at 10 feet on average, weighting in 750, these creatures have earned their name. Apparently an offshoot of the Imp race, they are bigger, stronger, and even tougher to kill. They also have the ability to generate plasma energies in their hands, these being more powerful and able to melt bulkheads. This breed is exceptionally race, but when they are seen, they are very good at causing death and destruction.
• Nincian – This race closely resembles humans, except their eyes are completely grey along with their hair. They were very advanced, far ahead of human’s, however as their knowledge grew, so did their unwillingness to commit violent acts. Records indicate that they had what can only be called a utopian society, until the Swarm invaded. It was then that the Swarm realized that the Nincian’s could support a Swarm organism for centuries, if not millennia. Thus they completely obliterated the Nincian culture, enslaving the race for hosts and slave labor. Most of their technology is stolen from the Nincian’s. Study of Nincian DNA show a close resemblance to human DNA, which raises questions as to how they are so similar to human. It also indicates why the Swarm is so interested in humanity.

Swarm Ship Information
The Swarm, despite having a vast space force, have only a few types of ships. Reasons given for this are that they are having to backward engineer Nincian technology, and thus are limited in the ships they are able to produce and use. Despite only having a few classes of ships, the ships they do have are deadly, efficient, and numerous.

• Deathglider (Fighter) – A simple 2-man fighter (1-pilot, 1-gunner), at 10 meters from bow to stern and 15 meters wingtip to wingtip, these are armed with 2 forward firing plasma cannons. Incredibly maneuverable in both space and atmosphere, these are the most common swarm ship.
  • Weapon Power – 250
  • Armor - 250
• Hellraiser (Gunship) – A larger ship, 50 meters bow to stern, this carries up to 100 Swarm troops with a crew of approximately 25. Armed with 2 set’s of Twin Plasma Cannons, and 2 Plasma Bomb racks, these ships are used for heavy fire support and bombing runs in both space and atmosphere.
  • Weapon Power – 1,000
  • Armor – 1,000
• Merciless - (Frigate) – One of the most common space-combat dedicated ships, the frigate is 250 meters from bow to stern. Armed with a wide assortment of plasma cannon, this ship carries 8 Deathgliders and 2 Hellraisers. Holding a active crew of 100, this ship is very deadly in space.
  • Weapon Power – 2,500
  • Armor – 5,000
• Painless - (Destroyer) – One of the most imposing ships, shaped roughtly in a circle with a diameter of 1500 meters, this craft is armed with a wide assortment of plasma cannons. In addition she carries 24 Deathgliders and 5 Hellraisers. Holding a crew of 250 and having room for 500 troops with a crew of 250, she is very well armored, making it difficult to punch through into the inner systems.
  • Weapon Power – 7,500
  • Armor – 15,000
• Hornet - (Carrier) – As the name implies, this craft that is 2,500 meters from bow to stern sole objective is to hold other ships. Carrying 80 Deathgliders and 20 Hellraisers, her offensive power is limited, but the armor is strong to protect her cargo. This craft can also hold up to 1,000 troops with a running crew of 500.
  • Weapon Power – 5,000
  • Armor – 30,000
• Hive - (MotherShip) – The second largest ship in the Swarm fleet, this craft is 8,500 meters from bow to stern. Armed with both a vast assortment of plasma cannons, she also has 2 Plasma Lancers. Holding 240 Deathgliders and 80 Hellraisers, she carries a running crew of 1,000 with space for 5,000 troops. Rarely seen, whenever these ships enter a battle, they have won.
  • Weapon Power – 20,000
  • Armor – 50,000
• Cerberus Carrier – The largest and most powerful ship in the Swarm fleet, the Cerberus Carrier weights in at 25,000 KILOMETERS! Armed with the standard plasma cannons, she also have 10 plasma lancers and 1 plasma pulse annihilator cannon, used to instantly sterilize a continent. These ships are incredibly rare, and have only been spotted by human forces twice; both times they were bombarding planets. There are no solid numbers for the crew of these ships, but according to rough intelligence, the swarm only posses approximately 60 of these craft.
  • Weapon Power – 250,000
  • Armor – 500,000

DM Post – Turn #0

Intelligence Report – September 25th, 2391
Results from the probe have confirmed our worst fears. We have detected a MASSIVE Swarm fleet incoming to the Sol system. We are still unsure of the numbers, but the following a rough guess based on the hyperspace echo waves we detected:

• 5,000 Merciless Frigate
• 4,000 Painless Destroyer
• 7,500 Hornet Carrier

Odds of a Hive Mothership, or god forbid a Cerebus Carrier remain high though. They have been after the Sol system for a long time, but only with our recent losses have they been able to get onto a hyperspace pathway towards Sol.

As of this time, the President of the Human Coalition is declaring a full evacuation of the Sol system. Of course this is impossible, thus we are falling on back the Omega Protocol. Many details can not be transmited on even secure channels, but all citizens that are unable to find transport out of Sol are being armed.

In addition, preparations for the Battle of the Line are underway. All non-sole-hyperspace capable ships are being retrofitted with as many weapons as possible. Bases are being established deep in the asteroid belt and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. We doubt that they will want to obliterate our homeworld, for they need us as “hosts”.

We have no choice, the entire intelligence council is in full agreement, launch the Angel Fleet.

September 25th, 2391 – 07:03

Leaning back in his chair after reading the intelligence report, Incom Morgan sighed. Holding the shotglass, he spun the amber liquid around, then leaned back and threw back the shot. Feeling the alcohol warm up his insides as it trickled down, he sighed and stood up, straightening his uniform. The report he just read was long in coming, but expected. The time at least they had was put to good use. All the Angel fleet escort ships had been fully repaired, which was a luxury today. Closing the bottle up, Morgan set it carefully in its holder then headed towards the door out of his quarters.

Currently onboard the Angel Ship #1, Incom Morgan walked through the bare corridors, many of them lacking protective covers for the power relays and computer circuits, showing how desperate they were. Walking past a series of windows, Morgan paused to look at one of them, which was facing the inside of this ship. Peering through the frost, Morgan stared as the hundreds of cryo-chambers, each holding a human being in perfect cyro-genic suspension. Also in the main chamber were DNA samples from thousands of Earth animals. This project, rushed, still attempted to cover all the bases.

Walking along, Incom Morgan finally reached the bridge. Incomplete like the rest of the ship, the crew that ran it was also skeletal in nature. Looking at them, Incom Morgan walked to the central tactical console, and with a touch of a few buttons, opened up a series of encrypted channels to a ship in drydock nearby.

Onboard the ship, deep within it, a series of generators activated. Relays activated, transferring the power through a series of adapters into alien technology. At the center of it was an Artificial Network, one that had classified itself as the “Red Sky at Dawn”, apparently one of the last surviving traces of the Nincian race. Founded a few years ago, it was partially responsible for the discovery of the system they were fleeing to. Now, it was time to have it help out again. A series of requests were made, informing the network of the current situation, and notifying it to prepare for combat.

Hitting a few other buttons, Morgan opened a channel to the rest of the fleet.

Morgan: “All ship, this is Admiral Incom Morgan. It is time for us to leave. Our trajectory will take us from Mars orbit through the asteroid belt to the outer edges of our system, where we will jump to hyperspace. When we jump, slave your jump coordinates to the ship classified “Red Sky at Dawn”. I’m also sending the latest intelligence information, and based on it, have your ships ready for combat. We are out of time.”

Mission #1 – ESCAPE!
Objectives

• Undock from Utopia ******** and form up around the Angel Class Ships.
• Escape Sol system without loosing any Angel class ship via Hyperspace outside Sol system.

September 25th, 2391 – 0700 hours
Coalition Starship Archipelago, CRS-688

Captain Hunter shook his head slowly, looking at the latest readouts of the fleet strengths on paper. None of it actually mattered to him, but the numbers were pathetic. 5000 at tops, of various classes... and that was COUNTING the fightercraft. The Swarm had more carriers than the Coalition's entire fleet had fighters.

He again shook his head, and dropped the papers. Despair filled his heart at the thought of all these people, frantically making ready ships for a futile fight. Guilt at how much attention had been paid to his ship took hold of his conscience. Merely 24 hours ago, Archipelago still had a ragged hole along her starboard hull, and her Ablative Hull Armor was tissue paper-thin in some places. The autoloader of the MAC rounds was wrecked, and the plasma-sheath system was always one shot away from rupture, worked on constantly by the engineering crews. And the dorsal .512's ammo feed was ruptured by the last shot they'd taken, spraying the whole compartment with rounds gone awry, killing everyone in the room.

But lo and behold, they'd swarmed through the ship, and swapped out the entire MAC compartment with one on Archipelago's sister CRS, Blackstar. He knew the reasons why, but it felt unfair that the other ship had to give up her main weapon in favor of his. Superior crew, less damage, and a more experienced captain made Archipelago the choice over Blackstar. And now Blackstar would be fighting with a jury-rigged MAC, not a fully operational weapon.

He raised the glass, and washed the poisonous emotions out of his mind with two fingers of brandy, savoring the taste of the hard alcohol as it set his belly aflame. 0705, Admiral Morgan's broadcast will be in... James started to think, and then a tone sounded throughout the ship, piercing the silence.

“All ship, this is Admiral Incom Morgan. It is time for us to leave. A few of crew tried to laugh at this like they would have befor or even if they were gonna be part of the main battle. Now they were running, and not the fighting retreat of the last six weeks but an escape from Sol, from Earth. The home of there race. Now it was gonna be taken finally after a war taking much of this crews life. The dragoon moved to the port side of the convoy.

Alexander thought about this whole thing. Ionic really throught history humans had made eachother into refugees. Now when they had made peace amongst themselves they were turned into refugees by someone else. Maybe they should have just kept fighting eachother, then again they would all be dead now if they were fighting eachother. The only reason humanity had been able to fight so long was the fact they had made peace amongst themselves. Anyway time to start paying attention.
