Zikonian Fleet Composition (R14)
I havent had much experience with Ziks since R7 - except from attacking them ( ) - so this guide may not be ideal. However, hopefully the following posts will be able to clarify any blunders i have made .
Attacking
This round, Zikonians have two race specific pods - Privateers (FR) and Pillagers (BA).
The FR attack fleet should consist of the following ships:
Privateers (FR)
Cutlass (FR)
Theives (FR)
Cutter (CO)
Beetles (CO) - Stolen by Theives
Sentinels (CO) - Stolen by Theives
This fleet will work well against Xans in particular during the early stages of the Round. Cutlasses fill the important role of discouraging Vsharrack defence against your fleet, and/or minimising the damage done by the defender's Vsh. Thieves are important as you will want to steal Sentinels to gradually take over the role of the Cutlass (as Sents fire before Vsh and they are more efficient, further reducing your losses). Beetles will also fulfill this function. Ideally, you will cap Mosquitos and be able to have an independent CO fleet, whilst your Thieves defend against Cath CO attacks in-gal to pick up some fluffy new Corvettes as replacements. This fleet will discourage Xans from attacking you with their FI/CO fleet once you have capped Sents/Beetles as that tips the balance of terror between Vsh and Cutlasses in your favour. I believe that this fleet (or variations thereof) will be successful early in the round, and later revisted at very late stages of the round.
In Summary: The effectiveness of this fleet depends utterly on how many Sents/Beetles your Thieves can capture. Use Theives to defend in-gal against Cath CO attacks, then later Xan FI/CO attacks to pick up Sents/Beetles/Mossies. Then attack with CO only (if sufficient mossies) or use your FR to back up the CO fleet. Cutters are to discourage Lancer def in late round phase.
The use of the second fleet, involving Battleships is pretty much common sense - build the ships that target your most common enemy's ships and steal them. Be particularly wary of ships that target your fleet and are not targeted directly in return (Ghosts, for example).
Zik CR fleets are also practical, with Syren, Roach and Hornets. Many Ziks i know are trying to capture enough ships to make this viable as Cruisers are pretty hard to stop (as most of you will know by now ), and CR/BA fleets are even harder.
Defence wise, it depends totally on what attack fleet you are choosing, and what your enemy sends at you. Keep in mind, though, without defence your ability to defend yourself is tiny (otherwise the attacker wouldnt have launched, obviously). I'd reccomend focusing on building your stealers and sending alot of in-galaxy defence to steal enemy ships that you are after, as your stealers tend to be too slow in-universe.

build lots of distorters,.. get a hold of cath co/fi and xan fi/co early on if you can,..
try to get your BS/crui hull quickly because the majority of your stealing ships are here.
Fake attack, as in send a fleet that looks like a podding fleet, but is actually just some steal ships of another class.
Dont attack people with more amps then you have distorters.

Zikonians are very flexible, but you'll end up concentrating more on smaller ships or big ships. Thieves/ Cutlasses in enough numbers can hit low-Vsharrak Xans and steal quite a lot of Fi/Co. To a lesser extent this is true with Cathaar too. Relying on Marauders to feed more Fr into the fleet from in-galaxy defence, you have quite a nice low ETA fleet. Alternatively, you can go more for Cr/Bs. This gives the advantage of being able to use Rogues/Buccaneers to defend with the alliance, and with Cr/Bs you steal 4/6 of the ship classes. You can then hit any of the races in enough numbers, and give yourself a strong Cr/Bs fleet that can hit most other races. Kill ships are there and fairly effective defensively for alliance defence until you steal enough other ships - 5/6 of the classes can be covered with alliance ETA, even if only anti-Cr and -Bs are steal.

A CR BS fleet could hit cat very nicely simply by outflaking them. once you get the lucky land and steal a few guardians and roaches, the world is your oyster

Zik's main BS focus will be towards caths to start.
Yes people will be building ALOT of widows, however if you can mass your rogues well enough to steal enough roaches then the game begins.
Also stealing some Guardians will help you start being able to target ghost weak xans.
Whatever you can steal, will be how your BS fleet will round out and who will be best to attack.
Zik on Zik might be good if you can find bucc less Ziks ... rare, but you never know.

*sigh* Fine. If noone is going to give a strategy on how to use the most powerful part of the Zik fleet then I will.
Zik vs Zik
This is in most cases going to be a trade of buccaneers and rogues, but if the zik has acquired more anti bs such as ghosts/BW or chimeras then you need to add more to the fleet. Ghosts and BW can be dealt with by adding marauders to threaten/steal them and buccanneers to protect them against rogues. Chimeras with pirates. Ziks are a simple target, and if you come across one that is much larger than you with only buccaneers for anti bs then you might try just sending pods - you lose the pods but you gain all those xp loaded roids.
Zik vs Xan
You need to find a Xan that is lacking in peacekeepers and ghosts - unfortunately these are rare. You send against him marauders and pirates, the marauders threaten/steal his ghosts (anti bs) and the pirates threaten/steal his peacekeepers (anti cr). You will need enough marauders and pirates to still take potentially heavy loses when attacking a Xan.
Zik vs Cat
Key ships you look at when choosing a Cat target are BW, scarab, and tarantula. Any Cat without many tarantulas is potentially a good target for you. You should use as many ships as possible when attacking Cats in order to soak up much of the EMP fire. BW can be threatened/stole with marauders, and scarabs with pirates. You should add rogues and buccanneers too to this fleet because Cat CR is very good and Guardians make a very nice addition to your fleet when you want to attack Xans.
Zik vs Ter
This is simply chimeras versus pirates, almost identical to a Ter attacking a Ter. There aren't any nice combos against Terran either :/
In summary:
Ziks and Cats are your best targets until you steal enough Guardians to take on some Xans. Rogues and Marauders are your most important ships, closely followed by Pirates and Buccanneers. And the frig fleet sucks ass.

Well, the balance of fleets changes over the round, and as fewer people are using the Frigate fleets the number of ships, including Vipers and Vsh, may have dropped. I know some people had problems with the Fr fleet, but maybe they're playing in a different section of the rankings.
