Article on Guantanamo [long]
Ok, it's a long article but please read it, especally f you don't know what's going on.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/guantanamo...303294,00.html
Is there anyone who still thinks this is a good thing to be doing?
I mean seriously. Even the most pro-bush people must be at least slightly shocked by what goes on at Guantanamo bay.
I still can't believe that there isn't a massive outcry against this.

Re: Article on Guantanamo [long]
In the end all american's care about is what's going to be for dinner, and if they don't make enough money to drive their hummer to the nearest taco bell for their #2 combo then that'll cause outcry.
Everything else will just cause the fake saccharin, oh that's horrible, response and then blip out of their mind cause it isn't happening on their front lawn.

Re: Article on Guantanamo [long]
I disagree. The American public are not any more amoral (or immoral, whatever) than other countries. A sizable proportion of the population is deeply concerned by this sort of thing. However, a larger section is still of the belief that this sort of thing is necessary to fight, well - evil.
The enemy are a group of people who have forsaken civilised values and led a direct attack on freedom, democracy and our way of life. Are you so soft to accord them concern when we strike back?!
And so on.

Re: Article on Guantanamo [long]
Their have been massive outcry's ste, but when it comes down to it, no-one in a western country is willing to effect anything that would depreciate their standard of living.
The suffering of a few is worth the happiness of the many etc etc.
Selfish perhaps but that's the way it is.

Re: Article on Guantanamo [long]
Something you have to consider is that many people really don't give a shit what happens to these people.
I know I don't.

I think that's his point, are people really that immoral and selfish?
Edit: not to mention racist if their nationality/skin colour is the reason for not caring (as that is the reason many are detained there)
I think another factor is the fact that reporting in the US is apalling. It protects the interests of the wealthy industrialists who provide advertising money which fund the journalists. Prisoners at guantanamo represent no corporate power therefore the story is low down on the priority lists of the American journalists. I bet many Americans have no idea what's happening there.

It's not so much racist, immoral and selfish, more a case of 'Why were these idiots dicking about in Afghanistan in the first place if they were not up to something they shouldn't have been . It's not as if it's on the Thomas Cook books as a holiday destination is it ?

Maybe they were Afghani?
Or maybe they weren't picked up in Afghanistan and they were actually picked up in the US itself, or Pakistan or anywhere pretty much in the world for that matter.
