Michael Mann's digital cameras
He's the director of Heat and Collateral, he used digital cameras for the latter. I thought that movie looked great, check out the cinematography on this one:

I hope more of these directors swith to digital camera, it's surreal. I've watched this thing a bunch of times now. There's a great shot of some Lear jets on the end of this teaser:

I was talking about the camera as well, as dd said you can certainly tell the difference. Should enhance the experience of viewing films even more hopefully \o/

Am I the only one who can't tell any difference?
It would help to have some reference material for comparison.
There is also probably a good reason they haven't switched. Aside from the fact that a lot of directors are probably more comfortable using a medium they have been using the last century or two. Generally speaking photographic film has an almost infinite resolution (in reality it is limited but it's small enough you could never tell). Just because something is digital don't assume it's better.

But don't you have to transfer the digitally shot movie onto actual film anyway when it goes to cinemas?

I'm sure they do in flashy upmarket ones in the US. Globally they don't make a dent.

The prettiest films I have seen of late were Amelie and A Very Long Engagment, both by Jean Pierre Junet, but I am not sure if they were digital or not.
Digital is the future though obviously, but mainly because you can do a lot more for the same money.

Both his movies were shot in Super 35, one of many formats used in 35mm film. Which is ironic because it can lead to lesser video quality than anamorphic (usually shot on panavision cameras), but the addition of digital processing has reduced that problem (super 35 is not suitable for widescreen out of the box and needs to be resized and processed which is why it can result in less quality).
I still think people need to be cautious about throwing the digital tag around in context to film. It has an entirely different meaning to that of the IT world.
I do however agree digital is the way forward, but don't be fooled by the razzle dazzle of todays technology. I feel it'll be a good many years yet before digital technology has caught up with the standards of traditional cinematography.
