Re: GIF Ad Banners

I like these threads. They give me a warm feeling inside.

When I was at school I took Information Technology as an A-Level. IT was like a poor man's Computer Science. I guess ICT is like a poor man's IT?

I actually think Pab's on to something. If when in mainstream education you spend a couple of months or more learning how to use MS Office applications (excluding when the courses use such an application as a minor auxillory at the end of a period of study to demonstrate a concept) and certainly animated GIF creation utilities (I expect the pornographic industry put a lot of stock behind good animated GIF banners) you're probably setting yourself up nicely for the kind of job where Photocopiers For Beginners would come in quite handy.

That is, until someone programs a photocopier to make an animated GIF, because at that point I expect humanity will call it day.

Well it's not exactly something that the average citizen in Britain is using/working on in their day-to-day life, no.

I have actually explained this before but you're pretty dumb so I'll do it again. The lessons and subjects are not based around outcomes (ie: "i have created a picture"). It's about learning the skills and knowledge to do it again on their own.

Nah, "IT" became "ICT" (the "C" is "Communication") when modems and the internet became more widespread. It's still the poor man's Computer Science!

I'm sorry man, but you are truly demented if you think teaching people about 1998 graphics technologies is useful in any way other than as a base to learn something relevant to this century.

And congrats on going with the patronisation double-whammy. If only you weren't completely wrong in everything you posted it might have had some merit.

Why not? This is what they do in other countries, such as Poland. Of course, this is reflected in the international rankings which show the English system to be mediocre at best. The fact that you can't even envision kids to have this level of aptitude is pretty scandalous.

Re: GIF Ad Banners

If ICT becomes a core subject in any way shape or form then the education system is in severe trouble. Maths, English, Sciences and maybe modern languages (I doubt their difficulty for the people who actually take the exams) are core subjects and always should be, because they make people think. I don't see how animations and being able to design your own website has any application in the modern world unless you're actually doing it as a job, in which case you would be expected to be trying out stuff that was far more focussed than what this course seems to set out to attempt.

As much as I am loath to insult your subject TK, I think ICT might be a bit of a worthless qualification. If people want to use computers for web design/coding/CAD or whatever teach it as something specialist rather than debunk it into a course that sets out to make people jack of all trades and masters of none.

Teaching advanced Word and Excel skills would be far more useful than dabbling with graphics applications.

I don't need to be an 'expert' on the National Curriculum, I'm merely using your last two topics you have posted on here as a guide, and using my experience 'out in the real world' to ascertain whether employers actually want these skills.

So what skills and knowledge are they learning about SVG's? I simply refuse to acknowledge the ability to crop/paste/save is any kind of skill

You were talking about your year 10 class, I didn't realise you had then gone to Year 7 in reference to the 'skills' you are teaching.

Whilst your patronising style of posting is annoying Tom, it's still not going to mask the fact you (a.) have no clue outside of 'school work'.
(b.) are likely to have a limited knowledge of the subject you teach (what was your degree in again?, and what formal IT qualifactions and experience do you have?).
(c.) you are an idle twat, which probably reflects on your teaching ability too.

I'm not saying kids know everything (amusing you flame Achi for doing what you do here), I'm saying to actually list Copy/Paste/Crop as a SKILL is laughable!

Re: GIF Ad Banners

I included that in basic computer skills - those were some examples. I just included them as an example of all basic usage of a computer - like logging on, knowing how to access files and shortcuts. All that crap.

Without learning how to copy and paste from the internet, how do you expect kids to write their GCSE coursework?!

The concepts behind internet-based communication, data storage and correlation, etc. Teaching javascript would be as retarded as teaching students how to create animated gifs, unless you used javascript to explain the benefits of abstraction and state-based versus stateless transactions and other such concepts core to computer-based communication.

We we taught the TCP/IP stack when I did my A-Level in IT. But we were taught how it works, not why the TCP/IP paradigm works better than other paradigms. (see, if someone had taught us about abstraction and state versus stateless transactions we would have grasped why it works so well)

If you teach someone how something works she can use that application or whatever, but if you teach someone why it works (which can be often done through promoting exploration of problems and possible solutions, especially if you want her to internalise that new concept) she can then apply that knowledge elsewhere.

Those employed in education seem to brandish the work "transferable skills" so much these days, but what you really need are abstract concepts - the whys. These abstract concepts are imbued in all subjects (abstraction and stateless transactions were the examples I gave for ICT) and systems, and these abstract concepts are in their very essence transferable. But what's really important here is that these concepts get the students thinking.

It's fine to teach people how to achieve an objective, like using excel or animated gif creation applications, but you must realise you are doing nothing more than programming a drone to perform a task; there is very little intellectual activity there.

Re: GIF Ad Banners

By the way, if you want a crazily large (14,000 words) but enormously wise lament on the state of mathematics in schools, click here for the PDF.

It details why mindlessly teaching students mathematical forumulas (the hows) is utterly useless without first helping students to think through and explain (in their own words) the forumula. There's lot more than that in the rant though. It's probably the best educational lament I've read since the one on why the British university system's shagged (search for: The Decline and Fall of the British University - I've posted it here before).

Re: GIF Ad Banners

ICT is a joke as a GCSE, A-Level or Degree subject. Its little more than a mishmash of basic skills and the simplest aspects of other courses thrown together and that makes it somewhat of a soft touch subject. You just have to look at what subject all those 6 year olds that the TV networks like to roll out on exam day have passed their GCSE in to understand that as its nearly always ICT.

IT does have a place in the education system as a good knowledge of IT helps students in not only their educational careers but their future work careers but it needs to be introduced sooner and be more focused on the realistically useful stuff and not the padding. There should probally be some kind of qualification at the end, I would suggest something that works like the American High School diploma where credits are built up over the years to pass.

Then by the time it comes to choosing your GCSE's you will have a good level of IT knowledge and would have more time for subjects that are more 'productive'. If you want to take an aspect of ICT further then you go down the Graphic Design or Computer Science route which are both alot more useful and challenging and better for everyone.

OFC it will never happen, the trend in this country is to remove the aspect of 'losing' be it from the removal of competition in a sport or from the need to ensure no-one fails an exam and everyone ends up getting their Degree. As such they would rather increase the amount of largely useless courses that are 'practical' and have 'transferable skills' as they are easier to pass than courses that require real effort and thought. Due to this your probably right in that ICT will replace science as a core subject. It will however be a sad day when it happens and will spell the complete demise of this country. especially when ICT teachers are like yourself and are sadly clueless and would rather teach kids to do things the wrong way as its 'easier' thus undermining the little benifit and merit that ICT GCSE/A-Level/Degree has

I completely agree. As surprising as some of you may find, I don't like the way that kids are assessed almost entirely quantitatively. I have pupils who are ace with computers, and really know their stuff. They should automatically be given A* or whatever, because their ICT knowledge is pretty advanced. Without all the extra crap of "plan your work", "annotate your work", "evaluate your work", "ensure you complete x, y and z to get high marks" they'd be there. The problem lies in trying to assess everyone equally, and the only realistic way of doing this is through outcomes.

We're told to teach the skills and knowledge (in terms of objectives), yet at the end of the day we're (as teachers AND pupils) judged on the outcomes - what the kids produce. So of course we'll push for the outcome, skipping the "how/why" phase usually. Which is terrible, but it's how our National Curriculum is set up

The reports/articles are mainly concerned with the different styles of learning (there's 6-8 I think, although the main ones are Visual/Auditory/Kinaesthetic) than assessment. That's also quite an interesting topic though. Some people much prefer to learn how to do maths simply by doing questions over and over and over until they understand the concept (this was how I was taught and it worked pretty well).

There's lots of different styles of teaching now though, to cater for all the different types of learners. It makes planning lessons much harder, as you have to take the three main types of learning into account (or at least you're supposed to)

Re: GIF Ad Banners

I may change my stance on this issue.

While I believe that animated GIF banners are an abomination at least they don't overstep the line like the current gen of flash animated banners do.

Having seen more and more recent examples of flash banners dishing out unsolicited sound and sometimes even taking over an entire page I would rather an animated gif banner any day.

Nail on head kinda. (although this is all taking this thread away from anything interesting, PM me if you want to know more!)

I've also just finished reading the link on Maths failings in educational establishments. Aside from it being written by an American, it is most definately worth a read!

If it's so boring and crappy and takes the enjoyment out of it, then why do you, I, and many others enjoy maths problems?

The reason (which this article doesn't seem to address) is that not everyone can enjoy maths. There will always be some subjects at school which we do not enjoy. I hated sports (PE) and MFL (yet, bizarrely, studied two languages...). Changing the teaching style of maths won't suddenly infuse learners with the desire to become mathematicians.

Oh, and by the way I believe that Maths does involve more "fun" type puzzles now than when we were at school. I was talking to another teacher (maths) a week or so ago and he was giving the pupils basic numeracy puzzles to solve, to try and crack the code for a briefcase he'd brought in. The successful pupil(s) would win the prize inside.

The main point he raises throughout the entire article (14,000 words lol), is that education systems aren't even teaching true maths. More so the rules that MUST be used and memorised, and applied over and over again to achieve this.

I agree that the writer of the article is clearly a person who has a great love for maths, and seems to believe everyone else can also. The main point though I think to take from the article is that educators generally dont give students the chance to enjoy maths. The writer also raises valid points about how the 'rules' of maths are just TOLD to students, with no mention of history of maths.

The article as gears more towards educating 'blue sky' thinkers, solving problems for themselves, with guidance to point them in the general direction.

Not everyone has to enjoy maths, but it'd be nice if the education system didn't attempt to make sure no one enjoys it.

Probably because theyre better at it than other subjects and find it less boring than History/Geography or whatever. Picking a subject at school doesnt mean you enjoy it; being prepared to do it in your free time does.

Quote:

The majority of people dont enjoy math problems and (more importantly) also wouldnt know what a math problem even is (going back to the point that whats taught in high school isnt really maths).

How many people who enjoy 'math problems' enjoy memorising lots of different trig forumlae theyre never going to use, or the horrors of high school calculus?

Everyone loved running around and playing games with their friends as kids yet most people hate high school PE classes. Perhaps this is another manifestation of the same problem!

I mean the fact that you have so many people who seem to not enjoy "playing games outside" suggests theres something seriously wrong going on here.

Well the standard curriculum doesnt. Obviously teachers can try to teach real maths on the side; the guy who wrote that article is a highschool teacher and thats what he was doing.

Re: GIF Ad Banners

The silly thing with this thread is that on the one hand I'm being told that making GIF banners is stupid and pointless, then on the other hand that school should be more engaging and fun.

The kids (as far as I can tell) have quite enjoyed playing around with the graphics work they've been given for this module. I've tried as much as possible to allow them to plan and design their own, while still keeping to the requirements so they can get the grades.

Nod/Weeks, while I can see the logic in the report you linked to, there are some areas it just brushes over and ignores; mainly assessment. Kids like to be assessed and to know their grades/marks. They like to be able to quantify their progress and work. Teaching them in the style suggested doesn't lend itself to quantifiable assessment, so how do we know if they are learnig or even progressing as learners?

So, it's not possible to engage a student in concepts of more worth, to a point where they are having fun?

Therefore, all those mathematicians (and any others who are engaged in subjects that aren't cool by today's standards) who have devoted a sizeable chunk of their lives to that subject did it even though it's not fun and exciting? Or perhaps only some (the ones that end up undertaking degree in mathematics, for example) students can find mathematics fun and interesting, thus absolving the current education system?

It doesn't brush over assessment. There's an example of a student explaining a mathematical concept in her own words. You can assess someone on that ability, which is far more laudable and worthwhile than assessing a student on whether he or she can remember a formula.

Not so different from people wanting to know their PA rank.

I did I.T. at GCSE level and gained nothing except a theoretical view of the IT world. (plus i got to draw homer simpson in ms paint)

I then did ICT at A-level and gained nothing except another theoretical view of the IT world. (plus i got to draw homer simpson in ms paint)

Needless to say i had better things to do then revise rubbish like that, so i failed both times. I then went on to do a degree in Computer Science (Other subjects got me the grades btw) where i learned such rubbish like who invented the PC and The history of the PC. I only had 2 practical modules, one in java and one in SQL.

What i'm trying to say is although i'm trying to agree with the fact that teaching IT is relevant in the modern world i just can't bring myself to do so based on what i've been through. I've learnt more in my last 2 years as a software developer than i ever did in a classroom. I think TomKat has the right idea by just doing practically. Let them take away from the experience what they will.

This is a pretty great thread, all that's needed is a level 3 burn from horn and it would be clownshoe material :]

They're no more useless than an A-level in Media Studies or Psychology (etc etc).

Now, I've never studied the topic but if you want to become a psychologist, then perhaps A-Level psychology is a good place to start?

Not really. It's no more useful to becoming a psychologist than studying Business Studies helps you become a millionaire entrepreneur. It isn't required for Psychology degrees, either.

A levels in subjects like Psychology/Law/Politics/Philosophy aren't required for their respective degrees but are apparently slightly helpful - the Law A level, for example, helps a little bit at the start but is all covered by the end of the first term, the politics done at A level is probably not even in the PPE course at all.

It's accepted by most universities as an A level, which is pretty much all that matters for A levels

You aren't supposed to become experts rather gain the fundamental knowledge to decide if the subject is one that you would be interested in taking to the focused education of a degree.
