Evidence of being ill-informed please (or more so than anyone else). I'm always dubious of musicians as political prophets, but I'm equally dubious of blanket condemnations. Greenday, Blur, Oasis, are three of my favourite bands, but U2 are still better. Suede are ok, The eels are average, radiohead probably contribute to the high suicide rate, blink 182 are laughable. Nirvana i dont like, but enough people with decent music taste otherwise seem to like them for me to "reconsider".

Oh dear. You seem to have taken my question as some kind of attack and responded by abusing some words. Ok, try "memorable" instead of "catchy". I don't have a CD player, but they are on other people's players. I am still trying to get over thinking it was a joke band. What is the attraction?

I think you are being a bit too harsh on Radiohead; while they have quite a few tracks that are utterly suicidal (hello pyramid song) and should be condemned to the dustbin, there are tracks which are, even if they aren't the happiest, very good indeed (Karma Police, High and Dry, Creep, Paranoid Android are just a few examples)

And Karma Police isn't exactly uplifting; nor is Street Spirit, which is their best work.

The only way i can see that you might have thought Ben Folds / Ben Folds Five were a joke band is if you have pretty much only heard "Rockin' The Suburbs". Ben Folds did that one himself, he said "i realised i needed a hit single for my album, so i turned on the radio and listened to the crap people are listening to nowadays, and in 30 minutes i shat this out. enjoy".

Its very different from his other stuff. Very commercial by at the same time appealing to a mass audience, and slagging it off. Eg
"let me tell y'all what its like, being male middle class and white"
"you better watch out because im gonna say ****"
Taking the piss, yes, but it isnt always interpreted that way.

I really like Ben Folds because i love Billy Joel - and Ben Folds has totally taken up where Billy left off in my opinion. If you want to make your own opinion, try "One angry dwarf and 200 solemn faces" for a 'memorable/catchy' song, "Fred Jones part 2" for a slow, saddish song, and numerous others. Rarely, rarely have i been as impressed by a band

Whether REM or Radiohead are boring is one debateable matter (though you might have trouble convincing me that Radiohead are any more than Lullaby cot music).

Whether they are more or less boring than U2 is surely not up for debate, eh?

You wont hear any arguments from me that Nirvana are better than nu-metal / nu-rock. I just think they are a smidgen overrated.

As to radiohead, i dont have anything against slow or sad songs, i just think they are breathtakingly dull and have always been so. And considering some of the 'boring' music i listen to, thats pretty bad

No, but it is a great song

. Ive put a prize up on the "lovely day challenge" - if anyone can sing the entire bit where he does the chorus twice in one breath, ill buy them a donner meat and chips from the indian of their choice.

The point i was trying to make is its completely different to be singing about Martin Luther King in relation to pride, than it is to be rambling on about anti americanism and parading che about the place.

And i do find meaning in songs, no matter how corny that sounds. Believe it or not, i really do love and need music, which is why im so passionate about it.

Aside from using the rollseyes smiley, you haven't responded to my point. You may not like them. That does not make them less informed than your good self. If you have some evidence to present on the subject then please do. I've no idea if they did any research or not to be honest. I know Tom Morello has a History/Politics degree from Harvard or something, and is from a family with some activism in it, but that's about it. You merely seemed to allude to some knowledge of the situation which I'd just like clarity on.

There are many idiots in the musical profession, and undoubtedly some faux-lefties. But I don't see how the situation is made by unfair critiques without justification along the lines of 'lol, theyre commies, and they have a music label, theyre obviously looosers, lol!'. I have only heard one persons comments on RATM who actually met them, and that was Noam Chomsky who seemed to think they were a relatively well informed, mildly intelligent bunch of chaps. I never said either band was less boring. REM certainly aren't less boring which is why I picked them - they are just as boring, if slightly more talented version of U2. And they have a couple of good songs, which puts them a couple of songs above U2. But they're fundamentally a boring band.

I'd also agree for a lot of Radiohead's output (I find Amnesiac dull for instance) but The Bends and OK Computer (in parts) both contain much greatness.
