No , Seriously , You must have that Bird Flu theyre all talking about
The bane of my existence : Uneducated Co-Workers
the fact that 4 people are off work with a virus at the moment has everyone panicking and screaming "Bird Flu" because they read newspapers I genuinely think have a place only in the cat litter tray.
Does anyone else have such "Wonderful" co-workers?

We have a nasty strain of the flu going around here but I haven't heard anyone refer to it as the bird flu.
Newspapers are predominantly crap though.

im currrently laid up in bed with the flu in question. Now as an asthmatic, i think its pretty safe to say id be a lot worse if this was a bird flu instead of just another annoying little virus.

our cleaner is rather dim
she mentioned bird flu when i sneezed (due to an allergic reaction to the dust her vacuum cleaner gives off, which happens every week)

Re: No , Seriously , You must have that Bird Flu theyre all talking about
my housemate got very worried about the bird flu yesterday, for no particular reason.
apparently because the govt purchased enough medication for a quarter of the population she is now scared that everyone is going to get it and die. I did try to point out a few things, such as the black death ONLY killed 1/3 of the population and no one had a clue what to do then. But she still seems terrified that she will get home (to liverpool ) and find 1 random family member dead.

Unless you only work with one or two people, or are Head of a Team of Professors of Extreme Cleverness I can say with some confidence there will be.
It's not that they will be dumb as such, they might be very competent in their own field, but they will be incredibly paranoid about certain things. It's part of their brain just doesn't function properly while the rest of them is OK.

H5N1. Its a flu thats birds have and which humans have no immunity against. As soon as a strain develops that crosses with the human flu, and thus can spread from person to person, we'll be dropping like flies..

Clearly the only solution is a worldwide avian genocide. Not only would it save 50 million human lives, but it would also stop the damn things using people's heads for target practice and give the fox hunters something to pass the time. What's there to lose?

No. Idi eats pies.

It depends what you mean by that. It's not something we come across in everyday life so nobody will have produced any antibodies against it but that doesnt mean we wont do when infected. The second your body is infected with bird flu you'll start producing IgM antibodies against it. It's just not a particularly fast process the first time you are infected so the disease can take a hold of your body before your immune system can react. The old, young and generally weaker people will react slower so potentially die while a good percentage of fit adults should be able to fight it off. Our immune systems are remarkably good at what they do.

Actually the 1918 bird flu/spanish influenza pandemic killed mainly people aged between 25 and 35. The better their immune system, the quicker it killed them. I can't remember the precise reasons, but it had something to do with the immune system attacking the cells in your lungs instead of the virus itself (in an attempt to kill off the virus residing in said cells) meaning that you eventually destroy your lungs and drown in your own blood. Very nice stuff indeed. This is coupled with symptoms of normal flu, which is still a shitty thing to have. Apparently the flu resides further down inside the lungs than normal flu and this has some relevance to how lethal it is. I got this all from a BBC documentary, so expect it to be dumbed down quite a bit, as most of these things generally are.

Actually, historically we are seriously overdue for a massive Viral die-off, (AIDS had such great potential but never quite lived up to the hype) so perhaps your co-workers are all keen students of History AND Micro-biologists who have taken the precaution of sequestering themselves from their co-workers (and carrying posy in their pockets) for the betterment of all.
They are probably on some other chat-group, 'diseasedanddying.org' or something, complaining about their silly co-workers who does not understand the critical nature of the situation, and the ultimate wisdom of their actions...
