Pluto :(

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/0....ap/index.html

has been voted out of planethood. I'm not terribly well-informed on the topic, so if someone sees something needing correcting, feel free.

But apparently the problem with pluto was that "...its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's", in contradiction with the newly-voted in planetary definition:

"a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit".

An earlier definition that had been proposed was based simply on whether or not the object had enough gravity to make itself into a sphere. I thought that was pretty good.

Anyway, changes in arbitrary taxonomies annoy me. Is there any upside to this at all? I see a lot of downside, not the least of which being the massive quantity of money wasted on the debate as well as the principle of that body getting control over the english language.

yeah.

Re: Pluto :(

I thought the main reason was that it was only 2000km in diameter and there were bigger ones than that orbitting a bit further out. So it was either include about 10 more planets into the solar system or get rid of one...

I feel sorry for the people who have gone out and bought science text books for this coming September.

Oh well, I'll get over that.

I don't see what it achieves, astronomers are just trying to justify getting paid.

They just wank each other off most of the time.

That plan proved highly unpopular, splitting astronomers into factions and triggering days of sometimes combative debate that led to Pluto's undoing.
What kind of arguments could they have had in those 'days of combative debate'

"Pluto shouldn't be a planet, its too small"
"Call the carepolice"
"stfu noob"
"Atleast i'm not the one trying to make dwarf planets"

Quote:
He had argued that Pluto and similar bodies didn't deserve planet status, saying that would "take the magic out of the solar system."
"If Pluto stays a planet its gonna steal the magic out of our solar system!"
Touché

Quote:
The decision by the prestigious international group spells out the basic tests that celestial objects will have to meet before they can be considered for admission to the elite cosmic club.

For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets
"Dwarfs can't be a member of our Elite Cosmic Club lol"

Quote:
It could be argued that we are creating an umbrella called 'planet' under which the dwarf planets exist," she said, drawing laughter by waving a stuffed Pluto of Walt Disney fame beneath a real umbrella.
"Let's tell the press what we've decided"
"lol can I do it? I just thought of a good joke"

Re: Pluto :(

Oh well.
Let's at least take advantage of the situation while we can and bug people who don't know about it yet:

'Hey how many planets are there in the solar system?"'
'nine'
'hahaha, you dummy, you don't even know how many planets there are in the solar system!'

Re: Pluto :(

iirc they were planning to send a probe to pluto, it was mentioned after the recent cassini mission, so they could get all planets covered. The people who based their careers on that or who had funding dependant on that may now be pwned.

I worked as a volunteer at the Mauna Kea observatory when I lived in Hawai'i. People would wait years on getting some time on one of those telescopes. They would spend years doing research, getting everything prepared, doing mathematical models, etc, and then after all that, they would get a certain amount of hours and some cloud cover would come in and destroy the little time they had and their career.

did they throw themselves off the mountain? i was watching the sky at night and apparently pro-am astronomers now have off the shelf equipment that lets them equal the work that was done in the late 80s early 90s!

No. There is no off the shelf equipment that is going to capture light like a large sized optical telescope 4,000 meters above sea level.
