Big Brother doesn't bother me at all, it's the parallel's to current goverments that Animal farm depicts so well that upsets me a lot more.

are you genuinely trying to draw parallels between the current geopolitical climate and the worst excesses of stalinist russia?

Re: 1984
Get the book, it's worth a read, I felt the message about how the farmers themselves behaved especially towards the end was more important though.
p.s. I'm not trying to draw those comparisons, I'm trying to draw attention however to the fact that the farmers(politicians/prime ministers) in this world are really looking into ways of cheaping out on things that will make life better for them, rather than making a better system that cares for it's own people in the way they want.
I mean we are now exploiting china/india at the cost of jobs at home, and instead of providing a better life for those at home in doing so, we are telling them they have to work longer for that better life they want now (take a look at the workhorse in animal farm). I don't know if you don't see it already but I do.

Re: 1984
We are moving towards a 1984 scenario, in some ways. Of course, it's not as hardcore, but neither is it that obvious. I guess anybody who's been involved with or followed the non-organized left for a few years can see some very scary developments in personal freedom. (Or destruction of)

Cheers, I personally see us all ending up like that horse, none the wiser then we are dead. Not quite communism but an elaborate disguise, cause as it is the costs of our commodities are going up and we are affording less of them for the same amount of work we put in before and there is nothing being done to equate it better except us being told to work longer.

Drop dead, it doesn’t matter,” she said
“It only hurts when I laugh,” she said
“Sometimes it’s never a crime
“To spend the day in bed”
She made certain that the curtains were red
To dream better by the light they would shed
She leaned back, tilted her head
And this is what she said…
“You can’t win; think it over again
“I can’t win; look at the trouble I’m in
“We can’t win and we’re stuck here together
“Yeah, I hope it will last forever.”
“Don’t ever dare to hope,” he said
“So I’m never let down too bad
“I know there’s nowhere to go
“So I’ll just stay here, instead”
He knew better than to pull at a thread
They unravel like the thoughts in his head
He looked out; it filled him with dread
And this is what he said…
[Chorus]
With good books and looks on their side
And hearts bursting with national pride
They sang songs and went along for the ride
And the other side complied
They said, “Hey, man, where do you reside?
“And could it be mother superior lied?
“And is it possible too many have died?”
It’s only natural to reply
[Chorus]

Re: 1984
The vans they come in convoys now, stealing through the dawn
Silent in the countryside in the hills up to the north
There's road blocks on the Meden bridge
There's click, click clicking on the phone
They're sealing off our villages, sealing off our homes
This ain't some tin-pot story arriving from a distant shore
But our own sweet, green and pleasant land in 1984
Her father crossed the battle lines in the first months of the war
She frowns down at the soup kitchen - she doesn't have a father anymore
It's cold in the early mornings, standing with your mates
Staring at the thick blue line armed and ready at the gates
This ain't some tin-pot story arriving from a distant shore
But our own sweet, green and pleasant land in 1984
The servants of our great nation
Have lied in the name of us all
While the officers of peace and order
Are busy breaking every law
There's hundreds on trumped-up charges
Hundreds on the streets
The future of our villages
Sown with bitter seeds
And hatred starts to rumble where there was no hate before
In our own sweet green and pleasant land in 1984
Nobody wanted to see the blood
As the blue lights flash through in the night
But all the words fell on deaf ears
And now the blind frustration bites
Two nations under one crown divided more and more
In our own sweet green and pleasant land in 1984
'Vagabonds' is best, though.

Re: 1984
I enjoyed it on reading it, and it's hard to over-estimate the importance of some of the ideas contained within.
However, I do think it's over-rated in some quarters (not that is particularly important) and I do feel it's clearly exaggerated to the point where the story line is no longer credible.

Seeing as it actually takes place in the past I'm pretty sure we can assume most people don't believe the events portrayed in the book will happen.

Hm, when I first read it it was still set well in the future.
But most "set in the future" stories don't age well. Whatever plausibility they may have had when written erodes as events overtake the story's timeline.

1984 had good ideas, and i liked it but the chapter basically taken from Goldsteins book, and just rambles on for pages ... and the endings a bit strange but good i guess as its the only thing that cud have happened i guess ish

The first two pages are the funniest I have ever read. That is of course the second time I read it, it was terribly disturbing the first time.

I don't recall much other than, picture tubes that watch you, room 101, libraries being banned and someone recieving a bullet to the head or something.

I read 1984 and Brave New World back to back recently. I'm not sure which future I'd find more depressing.

Orwell's intention, I believe, was not to write a 'credible' story line, but a disturbing, thought provoking, almost allegorical warning.
In fact, considering Orwell's focus upon the Nazi and Stalinist regimes, '1984' could be interpreted as more a reflection upon the past than a prediction of the future.
